Dog of the Day: Lizzy the Shetland Sheepdog/Golden Retriever Mix

Lizzy’s mom said she was a Sheltie mix. If that’s so, then I’m going to guess that the other half is golden retriever. She does bear a distinct resemblance to the Finnish Spitz, but the muzzle shape and coloration is a bit different.

Big yawn!

The face definitely has a certain amount of collie to it.

And a pretty smile. She looks like she's pointing at something with her ear. Maybe she is: her mom is standing over in that direction.

Black spotty tongue! Apparently golden retrievers can have those without any chow ancestry, but chows have it more often. Could well be chow in this pup.

This dog melts my heart! My dog Gabriel was an uncanny look alike to this beauty and I’m wondering if Lizzy too, has a curled tail? I would love to contact the owner of this dog to see if they have any leads to where I could find a dog similar Lizzy! Thanks so much, Tammy

You have good taste, I have to say: I think Lizzy is one of the prettiest and most distinctive dogs I’ve ever photographed.

Unfortunately, I don’t know her owner, and haven’t seen her around since August (when I took the pictures.) If I do run into her, though, I’ll point her toward you!

Oh, and looking through the other pictures I took which I didn’t post, I can tell you that her tail is indeed curled upward.

    Hi Adam,

I have an equally adorable dog, Sasha, that is identical to Lizzy, down to the black spots on the tongue. We thought she might have been Golden and Corgi, but we’ve never seen a dog that resembles her more than Lizzy does. Seriously– they could be twins. How certain are you that Lizzy is Golden/ Sheltie?

    • Adam Lang says:

Well, Lizzy’s mom seemed pretty sure she was a Sheltie mix, so I suspect that the mother was a Sheltie. The golden retriever part was sheer speculation on the part of Autumn and me, but the fur is very golden-esque, although perhaps slightly different. Of course, there are plenty of other breeds that have similar fur.

I can say, though, two things: one, Lizzy didn’t have the short legs characteristic of basically every corgi cross that I’ve ever seen, which seems to point away from corgi. However, number two is, Lizzy seemed to have the attitude of a Pembroke Welsh corgi. The ‘oh my god LIFE IS GREAT (now where are all the treats?)’ attitude. So, well, who knows?

If you ever get one of those genetic tests done on your dog, please report back to us and let us know what you come up with! And hey, if you have any pictures of your dog posted anywhere, leave us a link? Lizzy is one of my favorite out of the literally one to two thousand dogs I’ve taken pictures of… I’d love to see some pictures of her twin. 🙂

This dog looks EXACTLY like my dog. Haha I got him at the pound not too long ago and my mother and I were trying to figure out what type of breed he was, as then I found this picture! Lol my dog is beautiful and so is your obviously. But seriously, our dogs look VERY similar. 🙂

  5. Lisabet says:

My dog’s tail curls up! Does yours?? 🙂

  6. she looks more golden retriever than sheetland I have one of those and they have nothing in common

    • Adam Lang says:

Well, some Shelties have fully up ears, and goldens certainly don’t. But definitely more golden-looking, I’ll agree.

  7. Lindsey H says:

My dog looks exactly like her! His mom was a full blood sheltie. No Curled tail though!

  8. Meredith says:

My Sadie looks JUST like this dog. Wow. We thought maybe golden and cattle dog but I do see a sort of sabling on Sadie’s fur that screams sheltie (that blackish sort of tip to the hairs around the ears and such?) https://www.instagram.com/meredymae/

    • Adam Lang says:

Oh yeah, Sadie is gorgeous! And I could totally see golden/sheltie or golden/collie. The subtle sable color certainly suggests it.

  9. Judy Jenks says:

    Hi Adam,

How would I send you a photo of my dog? She looks exactly like this one.

    • Adam Lang says:

The best way would be to put some up on an image sharing site, like imgur.com (there’s a pretty good guide to that here, flickr, or even share them in a public album on facebook. Then you just put a link to the album, or individual links to the images, in a comment on here, and then everyone who visits this page will be able to visit the shared photos.

If that’s a bit overly complicated for you, though, you’re welcome to just send me a few pictures via email, I’d love to see them. My email address is alang@ the hostname of this blog (that is, @dogsofsf.com). Thanks!
