Dog of the Day: Suka the Papillon Pembroke Welsh Corgi Mix

I’m keeping this little guy’s secret in the title, but I think maybe a fox snuck into the hounds’ convention back at Bay to Barkers.

[Edit: How in the world did I get ‘do the day’ instead of ‘dog of the day’ in the title?]

[Edit x2: Suka’s owner found a picture of his pup and weighed in with his name and breed mix here. I love it when people find their dogs on my site.]

Papillon Mix

The quick blond fox snuck into the lazy dog show!

Papillon Mix

Reminds me a little bit of Watson, whom I’ve posted a couple times before here.

Papillon Mix

His expressions remind me of Watson’s too.

Ooh he DOES look a bit like Watson! Cutie.

  2. Tara M. says:

Wow I was shocked by this picture. He looks identical to my dog I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. I have had my girl since apr 2011 she is approximately 2 years old. I am in San Jose maybe there related.

  3. Delaine says:

I have a rescue dog, Bodhi, that looks just like this! And they are so unusual!
Bodhi is also a rescue from the area. I adopted him in Monterey. A year after adopting him, I spotted another dog like Bodhi on Fisherman’s Wharf. Their dog was also a rescue–from Salinas.
I have wondered for 6 years what kind of Papillon mix he is. In just the last 2 days I found some images of Papillon-Corgis (Corillons) that are just like him. Do you have any other ideas? They are wonderful dogs!!!!

    • Adam Lang says:

Papillon/Corgi is certainly one possibility. Another would be a long-haired miniature dachshund mix, possibly with papillon.

Whatever he is, he sure is adorable, huh?

  4. Sophie says:

My 1 year old rescue puppy looks exactly like this too! Got her in Minneapolis Minnesota. Thought she was Corgi golden mix but now I’m thinking Corgi papillon!

  5. Jo-Anna says:

Your dog sure looks a lot like my Charlie. We rescued him a month ago at 1 1/2 yrs. We were told he is a “corgi-mix” , now thinking corgie-Papillon.

    • Adam Lang says:

Aw! That is one cute pup! How big is Charlie? He totally looks like a corgi/golden retriever mix, though it’s hard to tell from the picture if he’s big enough.

    • Jo-Anna says:

Charlie is about 25 pounds and about 15 inches tall. Short legs and fluffy curley tail.

      • Adam Lang says:

Well, that would be on the small side for a corgi/golden, but still quite possible. But corgi/papillon is also a possibility, although in that case 25 lbs would be on the large side. (I think the guy in the pictures up top was probably closer to 10-15 lbs.)

  6. Bo says:

We just bought our puppy from the neighbors who said they found her in Oakland roaming the streets and basically surviving on good looks and charm. She is the sweetest dog with the most amazing disposition and looks almost exactly like the pictures up top. She has slightly shorter legs, a slightly longer/more terrier face, and her ears don’t flop at all.

My daughter is begging me to let her breed once before we spay her. She is so amazing, I am tempted to do so but only if I find her perfect boy match (not brother or first cousin, hehe). Am I crazy?

    • Adam Lang says:

I am the wrong one to ask about that. On the one hand, I’m mostly against backyard breeders, because, well, lots of problems, plenty of dogs in shelters already, etc. On the other hand… I am such an utter sucker for cute puppies, and yours sounds ridiculous.

      Vote your conscience!

  7. Marcell says:

OMG, this is exactly what my Puff looks like. She is from North Cali. She was feral but she is so super sweet. I think this my be her family members. The picture is exactly like Puff except she doesn’t have a tail.

  8. Mara says:

We have a dog that looks much like that and was adopted in Montgomery TX, the quick blonde fox genetics seem to be all over the place…amazing resemblance.

  9. Pam says:

I adopted a dog that looks so very similar to this one. She is one stubborn cookie!! I wonder if she is the same breed. She was found wandering in New Mexico – brought to Wyoming by a rescue – and the rest is history.

    • Adam Lang says:

Wouldn’t be at all surprised. Corgis are well known as super-stubborn. Is she very food-motivated? Any pics of her online?

  10. Mary says:

I have what I believe is a Corgi/Papillon mix. I rescued Max December 21st 2014. He was approximately 11 months old. He is the smartest dog I have ever owned! I believe he was possibly abused by a man. It takes him some time to warm up to certain men that seem to have the same characteristics. I can’t image my life without him. He is now about 21 lbs. The research I have done says this mix can be between 12 – 35 lbs. I am in Phoenix AZ.

    • Adam Lang says:

Awesome! The best way to post a picture here is to post it on an image-sharing site (I often suggest imgur.com although any of them will do, imgur just allows you to upload pictures without making an account) and then post a link to the picture here.

Love to see some pictures of your pup!

  11. Mary says:

I tried to post a picture but couldn’t find a way.

I am so happy to find this site and the pic of Suka! We adopted our Leila from a shelter in OK just across the border from our home in AR. We have had some speculative opinions about her breed. The shelter actually advertised her as a long haired Chihuahua but as soon as we went to see her the first time, I knew that she was NOT a chihuahua. My first impression was possibly mix with dachshund but soon gave up that idea because of her rear end body shape and her ears. Her first visit to the vet was met with a response from workers there as being “look a little Welsh Corgi hybrid”! As I started researching, I realized that she HAD to have some Papillion in her with those butterfly ears! And now finding this site and pic of Suka, I know that this is exactly what she is. Suka and Leila could be twins with the exception that Leila is a true strawberry blonde from nose tip to tail. Leila is only about 9 1/2 pounds right now and stands about 14-15 inches tall, so she is tiny. We did have to have her tail cut off which was disappointing (vet recommended because not only was her tail infected from injury and dead most of the way when we adopted, so we don’t know exactly what happened, but also she apparently had a birth defect of the absence of Sacral spine). She will likely have to be on meds for the rest of her life to help her poop, but other than that, she is healthy and beautiful and we love her to death.

    • Adam Lang says:

Aww! Sounds like a great pup! Do you by any chance have any pictures of her online? If so, please post some links to them here!

      • Peg Bellard says:

Yes, Adam. I just happened to get this pretty good pic of Leila today! Generally she is so active that it is difficult to get a good one, but she had just eaten her supper and was ready to settle down!
Please tell me how to download a pic here. I am unable to find a download link and the “leave a reply” box doesn’t offer a place to copy the image.

        • Adam Lang says:

Yeah, I haven’t had an image uploader here since someone decided to upload their porn collection. So the easiest way to do it is to upload it to an image sharing site (I like imgur because it’s easy, you just go here: https://imgur.com/upload and then you can upload without even making an account) and then just copy the URL that the file was uploaded to and paste it into a reply here.

Hi, Adam. I hope using the imgur upload works here. Would love for this community to see my Leila!

  14. This is my lovely pretty boy Pluto we found him as a puppy that was abandoned.
hes been missing for months, I still don’t give up hope to find him one day.
But I notic that dog you posted looks to be the same breed as him, we thought Pluto was Chihuahua mixed with Terrier but I think he’s the same breed as that dog. Either way I wanted to know for sure if that dogs Papillon Pembroke Welsh Corgi Mix. and I included multiple pictures.

    • Adam Lang says:

Aw, he’s adorable! And you’re right, he looks an awful lot like Suka. However, it’s definitely possible that he’s a long-haired chihuahua mix as well. I can’t tell: are his legs short compared to his body length? If not, then you’re probably right about him being a long-haired chihuahua or papillon mixed with a terrier. If they are, though, then it’s quite possible he’s a corgi mix. Almost all half-corgis have really short legs.

  15. Desiree Martinez says:

He was normal hieght from what i remeber but he looked bout the same height as Suka. Either way I wonder if I can find other dogs with that breed cause they’re so beautiful

    • Adam Lang says:

Suka had pretty short legs for his body length. It’s just that you can’t see how long his body is from these pictures.

  16. Sunny dog says:

My dog looks exactly like this ?
    His name is sunny
    So creative. I know

  17. Rodney Castillo says:

My bad. This is not my dog Suka. I had posted about 3 years ago this being my dog. I don’t know how to put my dog’s picture up but he has short legs like a corgi and looks just like this dog here but he’s got shorter legs. I still have Suka. He is 12 years old now.

    • Adam Lang says:

Aw! Well, easiest way to put up your dog’s picture is to go on here:
      https://imgur.com/upload
And upload some pictures (and make sure they’re public), and then post a link to them (or one link to each) in a comment here. I’d love to see them!

  18. Debbie Smith says:

I have a Ruby who came from Bosnia
when she was a puppy. She now lives in Sark, Channel Islands. I can’t seem to put up a photo.

    • Adam Lang says:

Yeah, unfortunately I can’t let people upload images here, since a few people would tend to abuse the privilege.

However, if you want, you can upload it to a photo-sharing site (such as imgur.com) and then post some links here, I’d love to see ’em. And I’d love to see where you walk Ruby, the Channel Islands are something else!
