Dog of the Day: Wheaten Terrier/Glen of Imaal Terrier/Lion Mix

Jesus Christ! It’s a lion! Get in the car!

We don’t really know what this guy is. He looks like he’s all terrier, and he has the face and fur of a Glen of Imaal, but he’s way too big. Wheatens are big, so…

Four more pictures after the break.

I dunno. I feel sorry for the dogs that get shaved like this, but at the same time, they do give me the giggles...

Also, this guy? Total ham. He seriously knows what a camera is, and he poses.

You could use the front half for a mop and the back half as a broom?

Look at the tail. Held erect, except for the bit with the long fur, which flops over. Totally goofy.

About three seconds after this, he tried his damndest to lick the camera.

  1. Glen of Imaal Terrier says:

The Glen of Imaal Terrier’s origins have been lost in history. What is known is that the dog’s name comes from the place in Ireland where this dog is believed to have gained popularity and possibly originated. The first public displaying of the breed in Ireland in 1933 but few people have seen one in the United States where it remains fairly fair. despite the fact that originally a hunting dog, like most terriers he has turn out to be more of a companion animal in latest years.

    Thank you, wikipeida.

I have one of those dogs !!! That my friend is a very rare breed called an Otter Hound ! So, he isn’t a mixed breed at all . . . 🙂

    • Adam Lang says:

Huh, I didn’t notice the resemblance before… he kind of does look like an otterhound, doesn’t he? But I’m pretty sure he isn’t, because he’s around half the size of a normal otterhound. (~20 lbs or so.)

  4. Hunter says:

My dog looks exactly like him. We’re still trying to find out what he is.

  5. joely says:

I’ve got a dog who looks just like this! We took him to someone who owned glen of imaals, and he said he was one of them mixed w/ another breed, so perhaps this is the other breed of dog he’s mixed with! He’s 8 years old and is what the man said was “wheaten” coloured, like the dog in the pictures.

  6. Sara says:

My Tanner could be his twin! Mine came from Dayton, Ohio, and was born in June 2006. Sweetest, gentlest, smartest boy you’d ever meet.

    • Adam Lang says:

Aw! This pup was a neighbor of mine for over ten years, and was super-sweet. I think he was fourteen or fifteen when he passed away, so hopefully you have a good long time with your pup too!

      • Sara says:

I’m curious, do you have an Instagram account that I could follow? And did your neighbors know for a fact that their dog was a Glen of Imaal and Wheaten terrier mix? That’s what I always suspected of mine, but he came from a rescue organization so his background was unknown. They really could be twins!

        • Adam Lang says:

No, no instagram. That’s too much like work. 🙂 And no, my neighbors didn’t know anything for a fact… I just had a guess. But it does seem plausible, doesn’t it?

          • Sara says:

Totally! That’s exactly what I believe mine to be. Thanks for chit-chatting about dogs with me.

  7. Jenny says:

I have a dog that looks just like this! She doesn’t have fur at the bottom half on her body. They said she’s a terrier poodle but I’m not sure why her fur is like that!

    • Adam Lang says:

Well, in this case the fur is like that because he was shaved. If your dog is double-coated (has a more wiry outer fur and softer inner fur) then it might be because she was shaved at one time: sometimes double-coated dogs who are shaved never grow back properly. Pomeranians are especially well known for that.
