Double Dog Day: Max and Little Mac the Chow/Rottweiler Mixes

Ran into these guys right near my home. And what a pair they are… they must be a real handful. After we were introduced, though, they were as polite as could be to me.

Unfortunately, I only got close-ups of one of the two, the one with the sharper muzzle. He was a real camera-hound. Two more pictures of him after the break.

Half-Chow, Half-Rottweilers

The difference in their expressions is awesome in this picture.

Half-Rottweiler, half-Chow

The fluff is amazing. And I love that they inherited the Rottweiler eyebrows.

Chow/Rottweiler mix

Some Rottweilers have the more pointed muzzle, and some chows have up ears, but I dunno... this guy really looks like he might also be part German shepherd or something.

My dog Koda looks so much like these two. I ran into these pictures searching out his breeds. They are beautiful dogs. Koda is well mannered and was very easy to train.

  2. Adam Lang says:

I’m not sure about the ‘easy to train’ part, since I didn’t get to know them that well. But they were quite well-mannered and very, very friendly.

Sounds like you got a great dog!

  3. Allie says:

They look almost exactly like my Harvey! I always thought he was a chow-rottweiler mix!
    Here’s a pictuer of him –

      Aww. What a cute pup!

And yes, you can use html codes; however, you didn’t include any text in the ‘link’ (you put in the a and /a tags with no text in between them). Thus there’s nothing to click on for the link.

Thank you Adam for taking those beautiful pictures of our dogs Max and Little Mac. Little Mac past away in June 2011 and Max past away December 30, 2011. They were 13 years old and there were a wonderful dogs. We miss them.

    • Adam Lang says:

I’m so sorry. I’ve taken pictures of well over five hundred dogs for this site, and I still remember these two well. They were so cuddly and happy, I was charmed instantly.

I’ll add their names to the article name, now that I know them.

I had a dog just like that one you got a close up of, her name was Cookie she lived healthy 11 years, beautiful good good good dog. I still miss my baby this picture brought tears to my eyes

  6. John says:

I also had a rotti/chow mix dog. She had the purple tongue, but she had the rottweiler face and head and her coat was mostly a reddish brown and very thick. My brother found her running with a pack of dogs in Houston and brought her home. She was about a year and a half old and was extremely intelligent as well as mischievous, but as she matured she became more settled and was always very loyal. We recently lost her after having her for almost 14 years, she will be missed.

    • Adam Lang says:

Sounds utterly adorable. Do you have any pictures? If so, I’d love to see them… feel free to post a link in a comment!

  7. Faith says:

OMG! We rescued our dog, and I kid you not, this image of the smiling one looks exactly like her. I clicked the link because I thought it was her!

    Do you know these dogs?!

    • Adam Lang says:

I only met them once. If you look at the comments above, you’ll see where the owner of Max and Little Mac found the site. Unfortunately, both of the dogs have passed away since I met them, according to her, but even from just my brief meeting with them I could tell they were something special. I bet yours is too.

      • Faith says:

So crazy! According to her vet paperwork she was a German Shepherd mix- we’re calling BS on that haha šŸ™‚ Definitely a rottie-chow!

  8. ShaneA says:

They are beautiful but the chows AND Rottweilers have BLACK tongues; there’s no way a full-bred, mixed breed wouldn’t have them, also.

    • Adam Lang says:

Chows certainly do! However, for the other, I think you may be thinking of the Shar Pei. Rottweilers do not have black tongues… in fact, if you go to the AKC Rottweiler web site and look at the pictures of Rottweilers on there, their tongues are pink.

Also, if you look in the second picture you can see that the front of the dog’s tongue is blue.

        • Adam Lang says:

Yes, I’ve seen that on that site too. However, that list also contains:

          • golden retriever
          • Australian cattle dog
          • German shepherd
          • Pomeranian
          • pug
          • Labrador retriever
          • Siberian husky

I feel like if all of those breeds had black tongues, I would have noticed by now… wouldn’t you?

In point of fact, if you read the text, it says ‘This page lists breeds of dogs that are more likely to have black on their tongue.’ Not ‘These dogs have black tongues,’ or ‘The breed standard says these dogs should have black tongues’, or anything like that.

Also note that every example Rottie on the dogbreedinfo Rottweiler page has a pink tongue, with none having visible black spots. Check it out yourself: there are dozens of such photos on that page.

Or. if you prefer, check out the AKC’s breed standard for the Rottweiler, which does not mention ‘tongue’ at all. It does say, “Lips – Always black; corners closed; inner mouth pigment is preferred dark.” But inner mouth pigment does not include tongue: the AKC’s breed info page says “DID YOU KNOW? THE CHOW-CHOW HAS A BLUE-BLACK TONGUE, UNIQUE TO THE BREED AND THE CHINESE SHAR-PEI ONLY.” And indeed the Chow’s breed standard says, “Mouth and Tongue – Edges of the lips black, tissues of the mouth mostly black, gums preferably black. A solid black mouth is ideal. The top surface and edges of the tongue a solid blue-black, the darker the better.”

I have certainly seen a couple of Rotties with black spots on their tongues, just as I have seen golden retrievers with pedigrees as long as your arm with black tongue spots. But normally the inside of a Rottie’s mouth, and his gums, are black, but his tongue is pink.
