Dog of the Day: Sam the Pembroke Welsh Corgi/Australian Cattle Dog Mix

With parents like a Pembroke and a Red Heeler, one might think this guy would be a gregarious tripping hazard to everyone around him. Sadly, he is a rescue dog who was pretty badly taken care of in his former home. He’s just starting to learn to trust again, and is fine with the family but very nervous around strangers.

Four more pictures, including two happy ones, after the break.

I may be reading into things, but that's a seriously sarcastic expression.

Those ears! I bet he can hear a slice of bread fall on a pillow from a quarter mile away.

Dog tongues are such amazing things. Nearly prehensile. A little more dexterity and they could handle can openers.

There, now that's a happier expression. Still nervous, though: look at the way he's holding his tail.

There's a little grin. Hope I run into Sam in a year or so... I bet he'll be a lot more social by that time.

I happened to stumble across these pictures of Sam and was wondering if he’s been adopted. I would love to find out more info on him if he’s still available. Thanks.

Last I saw, Sam was in a safe, happy home. Good luck finding a pup that fits you, though!

I’d love to see them… post some links in a comment, so that other people can see them too? 🙂

We just adopted a dog that looks identical to this dog.Is he we’ll tempered. Ours seems to be.I was so excited when I saw this picture.

Ah, I remember Sam, even though I met him three years ago.

He was scared of people, unfortunately. But I think that wasn’t his temperament, it was because he’d suffered some abuse with his previous owners. My guess is, with a corgi/red heeler mix, you are going to get a loving, friendly, outgoing dog who is absolutely obsessed with chasing balls, likes to herd anything he can find, and will probably try VERY hard to give him more food than he really should get. (Be careful with that last, don’t let him get overweight!)

I think you’re going to have a lot of fun.
