Dog of the Day: Madeline the Chow Mix

Well, I don’t know. She looks seriously chow-like to me, but her ears are floppy and her dad thinks she’s a mix. A mix with what? I haven’t the foggiest idea… something with floppy ears, I guess! All I know is, she’s super-cute, and super-friendly, especially for a chow.

Look at that tongue! I don't think I've ever seen a tongue that dark before. (I wonder if shoe polish was involved?)

Oop... the ears are semi-up in this picture. Maybe she's a full chow after all?

And here they're totally flopped down. Maybe she's just got convertible ears.

With a tail like that, who needs a feather duster?

Silly pup... dogs aren't supposed to smile like humans do.

I’m interested in finding a dog like this. Is she forsale or does she have any puppies about a year old?

I have one like this. I was just trying to figure out what she is. I’ve decided on a collie chow mix. Mine has a bit of white on her chest and around her neck like a mane, but she’s also 10 so it could be just from old age.

She looks similar to my dog- I have an australian shepherd/husky mix. His coloring and the black spots on his tongue make me think he’s got chow in him as well. Great dogs!! 🙂

The muzzle on this one is a dead giveaway… if your pup has the sort of slightly stubby muzzle, he’s almost certainly got chow in him.

I have a female dog that looks exactly like your dog.the sweetest, most loving, gentle, dog I have ever had.She has a purple tongue .She was set out at our house at three months old. The vet says she is part chow and part retriever because of her thick, bushy tail. the best big dog we have had.

I have a 14 year old Chow mix that looks just like Madeline except the spot on her tongue is small. She is also a mini version of your dog weighing in at 17 lb. I had a chance to get her twin sister and now I regret not doing it. I was told the other dog was a poodle.

    • Adam Lang says:

Wow! 17 pounds! Sounds like a pretty adorable dog. And 14 years old, that’s pretty great. Hope she’s in good health.

Any pictures of her online? If so, feel free to post some links here.

Madeline the Chow Mix passed away of natural causes this Christmas Eve at 13 years old. She was the most wonderful, sweet, loving, and kind dog I have ever met. She will be missed forever.

I had a dog very similar. Purple tongue, which gave her the name Indigo. Chow collie hound mix, about 50 lbs. Really a one person dog and guarded so well! Adored the snow, learned quickly, very well mannered. Never strayed. Her coat needed a lot of care. Lived to 14 1/2 years but in the end she went deaf and spinal degeneration finally paralyzed her hind legs and we had to let her go. Would love a mix just like that but in NJ it does get hot for such a mix.

    • Adam Lang says:

I know how warm (and muggy!) it can get in NJ, certainly for a long double-coated breed.

My dog looked exactly like Madeline. Exactly! I was originally told he was part australian shepherd and border collie. But as he grew people around said he had chow in him not border collie. We had to put him down last April and I was looking online to see if there was another dog as unique and beautiful as him and here she is.

    • Adam Lang says:

Aww, I’m sorry to hear that! How old was he? Do you have any pictures of him online? If so, please feel free to post some links in a comment!
