I ran across these two horses (and also a person) wandering through the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Their names are Adagio and Mio, and they are 23 and 22 years old respectively. (I did not, alas, note which one was which, but I think the bay — the one with the black mane — is Adagio.) When they were younger they were endurance horses, and competed in the Tevis Cup. Not something I’ve ever heard of, but apparently it’s big in horsey circles, and they are quite proud of themselves.
Now they’re retired, but they still get plenty of exercise and fun, and also plenty of scratches from newfound friends like me, in some of the prettiest spots in California. Which makes me happy. That’s how I’d like to retire!
