We have a major rat problem damaging our sewage system. Our 2 dogs are no help. Would a large cat work under the house in the crawl space to kill them? Of course, he/she would eat and sleep with all of us upstairs.
That depends entirely on the cat. Some are great ratters, some are terrified, and some are just completely uninterested.
You might be able to find one who is a tested ratter. Another option would be a terrier.
