Dog of the Day: Atlas the Great Dane

I’m not sure about this, but I think Atlas might be the store dog for the eyewear store at 454 Geary. Sorry, I don’t know the name, since it doesn’t appear to have a sign. But it does have one hell of a dog.

Great Dane

I think I heard that Atlas is around 8 or 9 months, and is currently 90 pounds, and will end up nearly double that. Wow.

Great Dane

He's very well-trained and polite for a dog of that age. Doesn't jump up on people or slobber all over them even right after drinking.

Great Dane

I kept expecting him to get a great big Great Dane kiss, but no such luck.

Great Dane

The light was awful and I was shooting handheld at 1/40 of a second, but I'm still really sad that this one didn't come out well. Because those ears are RIDICULOUS.

    Some perfect ear floppage there!
We’ve been seeing a lot of Danes on this side of the Bay lately. I feel like we see one just about EVERY time we go to Pt. Isabel. Has it always been that way?? Or am I just starting to take notice?? Or I get this impression because we only go to the larger parks now and never go to the smaller, fenced-in parks anymore? I’m not sure…

It’s hard for me to say. I’ve been to Point Isabel several times and I often saw Great Danes, but I don’t know about every time. However, according to AKC, here, Great Danes are the seventeenth most popular dog breed in the US.

I know! I’m shocked! They’re awesome dogs, but god, they live such a short time and they are so huge and eat so much. It would break my heart to have a Great Dane.

Meanwhile, Bernese Mountain Dogs are #39, and I see twice as many of them as I do Great Danes in San Francisco. And Pembroke Welsh corgis are #27… well, I guess it makes sense that there’d be more of them in a city than elsewhere, given the size difference, but…
