Double Dog Day: German Shepherd Mix and Chow Mix

German Shepherd Mix? Almost definitely. Chow mix? Who knows. Distinctive as heck though!

(Had a good-sized post I was planning on for today, but business-lunch took more time than I expected, so you get a short one. Soon though.)

Edit: Steph over at ‘Musings of a Biologist and Dog Lover‘ has done a detailed breakdown of what she believes the genotype and breed mix of the ‘chow mix’ are, here. Check it out, it’s well worth a read. Dog genetics is a fascinating subject to me… I mean, really, how do you start with a wolf on one side and end up with a West Highland white terrier and a Bernese mountain dog on the other, just by twiddling a few genes?

Tee hee! The ears! The goofy expression! Gawd, the one on the left kills me.

This one just looks like he was made out of spare parts. Ridiculous.

Would you mind if I used this image on my blog?

I know this is an old post, but I was wondering if you had any further information on the German Shepherd cross. Do you know what it is crossed with, or have any guesses? We adopted a stray that looks just like it, and we’re trying to come up with some idea of what she is made of. Beautiful dogs anyways!

That is a toughie. Do you have any pictures of your dog you could post links to? Preferably at least one full-face, one that includes a face profile, and a couple of full body shots from different angles? I am hesitant to venture a guess without a little more info. Plus I would like to get a look at your dog since if she has ears like that she will almost certainly make me giggle.

Here’s a link to a Google album with photos of her:

Thanks for the quick reply! I’m excited to hear what you think!

How old is she? How much does she weigh? How tall is she, roughly? She’s a toughie!

          • Kat says:

She was about two years old in those photos. Standing, shoulder to floor is 24″; tip of nose to base of tail is 47″. She weighs about 80-90 lb. After being skin and bone when we adopted her, we fear that the pendulum may have swung the other way, so that weight may be a little high for her size. She has some squishy areas, but not too much. 😉

Okay, then, I think Autumn and I have a guess. (We thought she was too small for this, but it sounds like she might be just barely big enough.)

We think your pup might be a German shepherd/Great Dane mix! The shape of the muzzle is very reminiscent of a Great Dane. And the ears are very much what would be expected with Great Dane floppy-ears interacting with German shepherd erect ears.

Also, she’s adorable! And you can tell her I said that.

Thanks so much! She is a adorable and she’s got a great personality to match!
