Dog of the Day: Verna the Repeat Customer

It’s Verna! We first met her when she was just a (hilariously cute) puppy close to four years ago, and then when she was all grown up (but still hilariously cute) two years ago. Her dad says he thinks she’s part Nova Scotia duck-tolling retriever, both because she kind of has that look and because she loves swimming and attracts all the ducks. (Which, after all, is what duck tollers were bred for. AKA ‘My toller brings all the ducks to the yard, and they’re like, ‘quack quack quack quack quack’.) I can totally see it… the fur looks quite similar, including the white patch on the chest. He suspects she’s mixed with chow, and/or possibly some kind of shepherd, so we’ll just say that. Because I like having two obscure chow mixes in a row, so why not?

Funny, I caught her doing this when she was a puppy too. She must be an itchy dog.

Verna has blossomed into a self-confident, playful, happy, and very curious dog.

Look at that glorious tail.

There’s that amazing smile.

Verna runs alongside dad’s bike. No leash to get caught, she’s just incredibly well-trained and obedient.

I would totally follow Verna home.

I saw these pictures and my dog looks EXACTLY like Verna! I would love to get more info or just compare pictures with her owner.

Wow, really? I have yet another crop of pictures of Verna that I’ll be posting soon, but unfortunately she just moved out of San Francisco (her owner moved his business) and I’m not sure where they went, so unless you get lucky and he drops by here, I’m afraid you may be out of luck.

How old is your dog? Where did you find him or her? Verna’s super-smart and awesome.

Our Dog, Doug, aka the male Verna is about the same age. He was adopted from a humane society in Michigan City Indiana. They found him as a stray, we adopted him when he was probably about 9month (according to our vet). We live in Chicago…but I swear they could be siblings!!

Our dog, Millie, also looks EXACTLY like Verna. she has the same white markings on her chest, black on her ears and fur patterns on her back and tail as well as expression and coloring. She is a rescue from Georgia, but we only adopted her once she was around 10 months old, so it was really nice to see what she looked like as a puppy through your photos of Verna.

I am honestly so glad you wrote this article! I have a dog that looks just like her named Ashley and I lover her SO much! I’m glad I have a hint on what she might be. She looks EXACTLY like Verna!

    • Adam Lang says:

Ooh, if you have any pictures of Ashley online, could you post links to them here? I really like Verna, and I’d love to see your pup.
