Dog of the Day: Verne the Basset Hound/Brittany Spaniel

Help me out here: for reasons I do not fully understand, I feel like Verne is wearing footie pajamas. Can anyone figure out why?

I believe that this dog is goofy enough to hold his head up in the company of corgi-mixes in the ‘all-time world’s most goofy dog’ competition.

Look at the legs. They almost look like they have extra joints.

I hope he didn’t mind my giggling at him. He looks kind of hurt in this picture.

Perfect boopable nose. Boop!

A little dose of puppydog eyes, too.

I think it is the ‘extra’ joint thing – that makes his ‘ankle’ look like it is the elastic part of the footie pjs. Darling dog though!

    • Adam Lang says:

I’m thinking so too: it makes it look like the foot of the pajama isn’t all the way on the foot of the dog. Only adds to the adorability.

That dog us awesome! I’ve seen him trolling around town and he is special! Where do you get a dog like that?talk about “designer breed!”

    • Adam Lang says:

I suspect you just hang out at the SPCA and hope, because I seriously doubt there are any ‘Brasset Spound’ breeders out there. Which, judging from Verne, is a damn shame!

  3. Sullivan says:

I’d like to get to know him! Amazing!

  4. Leicester says:

That dog is awesome! Great photos!

  5. Honey Boo Boo says:

I asked my mom if we could get a Verne and she said if I win more pageants!

Do you have any pictures of your dog now that she’s older? Describing our dog I would say long haired basset hound with a curly frilly tail. Your dog has many of the characteristics of ours.

A real sweetheart. Loves to lay on beds and on her back.

    Thanks,

I have a basset spaniel that is almost Verne’s doppelganger.

    • Adam Lang says:

Really? I’d love to see pictures if you have any. Verne is one of those dogs that I will always regret not getting any more pictures of him, because he is hilariously awesome.

      • Emily says:

Weird, my name is Emily too and i have a Brassett Spound too! Email me and I’ll send you pics. Looks just like Verne, only named Brigadier!

        • Adam Lang says:

Brassett Spound! Oh man that is hilariously awesome. 😀

Easiest way to share pics on here is to post them on imgur.com and then paste links to them into a comment here. That way I’m not the only one who can see them!

I too have a Basset/Brittany Mix! I’m no where near San Francisco, but just happened to be looking to see if I could find any pics of others like my girl and saw this! I’ve had my Shiloh since she was just a babe and she’s almost 7 now. Don’t know what I’d do without her!

    • Chris says:

Verne is our office dog at work – I’d love to see a dog that looks like him, they’re hard to come by. Do you have any pics you’d be willing to share? 🙂

      • metoo says:

I don’t have any pics of my baby, but he is Basset/Brittany mix too. He has the same knocked knees and the same sweet as can be expression at all times. He so gentle, sweet, and lazy… mind you, mine has more than a “bit” of a weight problem, which we are currently working on, but the breed mix makes such a wonderful family dog and companion. Mine is Brody. I will attach pics in the future if I get a chance. This one looks to be just as sweet. I sooooo wish this would become a common breed… even if not recognized by AKC/CKC.

I have a Brittany / dachshund mix (90% sure). She looks a lot like your Verne. I just assume she’s part dachshund because of her short legs and long body. She also is pigeon toed. I adopted her at the humane society and they labeled her as king Charles, but I’ve been doing my research, so I can understand her personality and potential health risks (how I found you), and your hound may be part weiner.

    • Adam Lang says:

Verne is quite big for a dachshund, even a full-sized one, and even (body-wise) big for a Brittany. So in his case, at least, basset is a pretty good bet.

  11. W.W. Warren says:

I have just adopted a dog from our local Humane Society that looks a LOT like yours. They told me she was a Basset Hound / Dachshund mix but she looks like a dead ringer for your dog. I am including a link to my Facebook picture album for her as my “website” so you can see for yourself.

  12. Jacq M says:

We have one too! Adopted from a local shelter. His nickname around here is Funny Feet!

  13. Susan says:

My dog looks similar to yours. We adopted at 5 months. “Mini”Cooper is a year old now. We believe he is a Brittany mix, but not sure. He is about 19 lbs.

    • Adam Lang says:

How big is he? Could be a Brittany/basset mix.

Any pictures of him online? Feel free to post a link or two in a comment!

      • Susan says:

Thanks. I’m not too tech savvy, but will try to post a pic. I do think he has Basset Hound and something else mixed with the Brittany after seeing your pics. He is a great dog!
