Dog of the Day: delayed

Dog of the day is delayed due to technical issues with the WordPress iPhone app.

Update: Sorry.  No dog today.  And the WordPress iPhone app works great, except when it’s eating your posts and losing them without any trace.  Yay.

Dog of the Day: Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier Mix?

Autumn thinks that this guy is a Chihuahua/Jack Russell terrier mix, and who am I to argue?  Second picture after the break.

I'm normally not one for dog sweaters, but this one isn't bad.

Dog of the Day: Border Collie

I really like border collies, but sometimes they can be pretty… intense. (Second picture after break.)

This guy sure has the border collie stare down pat, doesn't he? I think he's herding me.

Dog of the Day: ???

I am having a lot of trouble even guessing what this guy could be… maybe a Sheltie mix? Autumn has hazarded a guess that it may be a pomeranian mix, but that’s a stab in the dark for her, too.

He looked really odd, too. Do you see the dark line that goes from near the left foreleg back and across? Where it kind of looks like all the fur behind it is a little patchier, or shorter, or darker, or something? That’s because the fur behind it is patchier, shorter, and less fluffy. It’s really odd: the only thing I can think is that this is one of the breeds that doesn’t take well to being clipped. Apparently, with many double-coated (undercoat and guard hairs) dogs, if you shave them, their guard hairs grow back but their undercoat only grows back in patches, and can end up looking awful, and also being much less protective against climate, water, and so forth. And it’s not necessarily determined by breed: what works fine for some members of a breed can end up causing major problems with others. (I’ve especially heard this about Shelties.)  Never clip a double-coated dog short, unless the fur is so matted that there is absolutely no other choice (or unless that’s part of the recommended grooming for the breed, in which case it’s probably safe.) Even if they are that matted, you might want to take it to a groomer and see if they can do anything about it first.

This little guy was very timid, and clearly intimidated by me, too.

Still an awfully cute foxy face on this guy. But I feel so sorry for him, with that patchy fur.

Dog of the Day: Boxer

This guy was obviously pent up for quite a while, and then taken out to play.  He is having the time of his life, running around, poking his nose into everything and everybody.

Plus, special bonus dogshadow after the break.

Look at that goofy expression. Boxers have an edge when it comes to sheer goofiness.

(Slightly Late) Dog of the Day: Flat-Coated Retriever

So, for those of you who think that ‘flat-coated’ is a silly name for such a fluffy dog, let me tell you why they’re called that.  Apparently, before there were Labrador retrievers at all, there were two similar dogs.  One was the flat-coated retriever.  The other was the curly-coated retriever.  They’re both pretty rare these days.  The flat-coat was fluffy compared to the Labrador, but then, most dogs are.  The curly-coated is, well, definitely curly.  And looks kind of goofy to me.  (By the way, sorry for the late post.  Looking for an apartment is time-consuming, but applying for one (especially when you really, really, really want it, and there are at least four other people ahead of you for it) is very time-consuming, and mentally draining as well.  On the upside, I didn’t have any trouble getting to sleep last night.)

Anyway, flat-coats don’t look goofy.  They look awesome.  (One more pic, after the break!)

Flat-coated retrievers have really soft coats, and are considered 'eminently pettable' by our team of top judges.

Dog of the Day: Bolognese?

Not actually sure what this guy is.  Autumn says it might be a Bolognese.  If anyone knows any better, please do chime in.

In any case, it was definitely very curious and interested in us.  It was in a dog grooming place, where I hope they managed to get rid of those stains.  I always felt sorry for the dogs that got them… they look kind of icky.

Pity this guy was behind glass because he was very eager to play with us.

Dog of the Day: English Mastiff

These guys always look so worried, don’t they?

Worried? Concerned? Sad? One of those, anyway.

Super Serendipity Bonus Birthday Puppy PAIR!

If you didn’t see the previous post to this one, check that out first.

So, for lunch, I walked down to Safeway to pick up an apple, and from there to Subway, to pick up a sandwich. And who should I meet on the way to Safeway but Bailey and his mom again!  I told her I’d posted the pictures on my blog, and she said she’d look at them.  And I said hello to Bailey, and got another picture, and then went in to Safeway again.

And when I came out… there was Bailey.  And there was Jackson!  (More pictures, and Dogs of SF’s first video, below the break!)
