Bonus Birthday Dog: Yellow Lab Puppy!

I figured on posting a bonus dog today, because it’s my birthday.

What I didn’t figure on was running into this guy on the way to work this morning. I didn’t even walk, I took the bus, so there was a very limited time for me to run into dogs. But I lucked out, and I just had to rush this guy to press, because he’s super-cute.

I even have some vital stats on him: his name is Bailey, and he’s about 9 weeks old.  (Three more pictures after the break.)

Puppies are amazing. They run the full gamut of emotions in thirty seconds, over and over again.

Dog of the Day: Doberman Pinscher

Our first Doberman Pinscher!

I’ve always thought Doberman Pinschers looked kind of intimidating… big, slim, fast, and… pointy. Sharp ears, sharp muzzle. Dangerous. It didn’t help that I was knocked around by a neighbor’s Doberman when I was a kid, although even then I knew that that dog, in particular, wanted nothing more than to lick my face. He had pretty hideous breath.

This guy was a little more restrained.  Quite friendly, in fact, in a not-terribly-attentive sort of way. I suspect he had something else to pay attention to.

Obviously an extremely alert dog.

Dog of the Day: Nervous Vizsla

This was one of the pictures that fed my (incorrect, to judge from the responses I got) assumption that Vizslas were a little skittish. You can see he’s not quite sure what to make of me, and he doesn’t look too happy to be forced to find out. Once I spent a couple minutes letting him sniff me, he decided I didn’t seem too threatening and let me pet him, but he was never very comfortable with it.

Could be he was a rescue dog that came from a bad situation, or something like that. Or maybe he just wasn’t having a good day… lord knows I’ve had days where I felt like that.

Doesn't that expression just make you want to hug him and tell him everything's going to be all right?

Double Dog Day: Rottie with Bonus Collie/Lab (?) mix

These two are really pretty, and are obviously good friends. Check out how that Rottweiler is sitting, too. The other guy looks to Autumn like a Collie mix, maybe mixed with lab. With the tougher ones, I just nod and smile; she’s the expert.

Dog of the Day: Red Australian Shepherd

I ran into this sweetheart while walking to work along the Embarcadero.  In the pictures she seems to have a bit of what might stereotypically be called a ‘hangdog’ expression… she was like that in person, too.  I don’t think she was sad, or scared, really, though… she’s just kinda old, and maybe tired.

Her name is ‘Fergie’, aka ‘Maude Ferguson of Flanders’, for reasons that I will not get into here. 🙂  Couple more pictures after the break.

Dog of the Day: MinPin? Australian Kelpie?

I’m not sure if this guy is a Miniature Pinscher or an Australian Kelpie.  Whatever he is, he’s a real cutie, and was really affectionate, though kind of hyper.  I never even knew MinPins existed until I met him.  (Another pic after the break.)

Incidentally, sorry about the couple of days without posts; I was trying to get to bed early and forgot to post.  I’d like to get a queue up, so that if I forget for one day it’ll automatically post, but that’ll require time to pre-post a bunch of stuff.  Soon, I promise.

Dog of the Day: Golden Retriever Puppy!

Oh.  My.  God.  Cute!

Shh... the rawhide has completely exhausted the poor pup.

Dog of the Day: Foofly Wiener!

Yes, it’s foofly wiener time again, folks. This one is a mini-dachshund, and was very shy. She eventually consented to receive ‘da pettins’ from Autumn, but I could never get near her, so I just took pictures.

A wary wiener.

Dog of the Day: Umm…?

Nobody knows anything about this guy, except that he was found swimming around near New Orleans after Katrina hit. Nobody claimed him, and he didn’t even have a collar on. He was brought up to the Bay Area and then adopted, and has spent the time since in sunny San Francisco. I hope whoever had him before made it out okay. And if they did, I wish I could tell them that he’s fine and happy.

Nobody has the foggiest idea what mix of breeds he is, but he’s a perfect gentleman — er, gentledog — to people and dogs alike.

Big yawn!

Big yawn!

I just have no idea what he is. From the front, he looks a little lab-ish (or flat-coat-ish).

From the side you can see that if there is retriever in him, it's in the minority. He's huge and heavyset!

Look at that devilish expression. He's a real sweetie, but I bet he hides shoes.

Dog of the Day: Shiba Inu

Shiba Inus may be the foxiest of dogs.  I don’t mean they’re the most attractive (though they are in the running) but they may be the ones that look most like foxes.  It’s a pity they’re so standoffish a lot of the time.  This one wasn’t, though.  He ran right up to me, tail a-wag, and said hello.  (Two pictures this time.)

The world, I firmly believe, needs more highly social Shiba Inus.

It took me a little while to get him to stop sniffing me long enough for me to get a good shot.
