Dog of the Day: Kona the Basenji German Shepherd Mix Puppy

Kona is nine months old and may well actually be a basenji German shepherd mix, despite the fact that (as referenced in a comment on this post) rather a wide variety of things get labeled ‘basenji mix’. Well, whatever she is, she’s very photogenic.

Happy almost-turkey day! What’re you having for Thanksgiving?

She has gorgeous brown eyes.

This is the classic ‘parent trying to get dog to look at photographer’ shot. It NEVER works.

Beautiful dog! Happy Thanksgiving to one and all! (Especially the furry ones among us.)

    Carolina Dog.

I have a puppy that looks exactly like her also named Kona. It was so weird to see this. We have been told by a lot of people that she looks like a Belgian shepherd. She’s 8 months old and weighs about 30-35 lbs.

We have a dog named Nikola that looks like Kona could be her sister! We got her from a rescue in Denver and I’ve always wondered what her mix was.

  5. Amanda says:

She does have a curly tail! She sounds like a bird when she’s really excited and says “mer” when she’s tried or after a good yawn, or the long “merrrrrrr” when she plays with my husband and they get crazy.

    • Amanda says:

Her favorite sleeping position is on her back with all feet up in the air. She can jump a six foot fence. It took seven years for her to stop destroying things (shoes, clothes, a coffee table, books, book shelves, jars of lotion, Kleenex and tp). She wasn’t really snuggly until 8 or 9. She is a fierce protector and always on duty. Especially the fence we share with neighbors with dogs.

That does sound like a basenji mix, who inherited all of the funny noises that basenjis make. Wouldn’t be surprised if your pup was a basenji/German shepherd. Do you have any pictures of her online? If so, do post some links in a comment, I wanna see!

I have a 5 yr old male (Basenji-Shepard) named Rufus. Initially, the Rescue I adopted him from told me he was a “Husky-??” and they knew that for certain – but after a handful of Vet visits, and still a lack of ‘barking’ we finally got the confirmation. He looks just like Kona!

You can find pics of him from Puppy-Now on my FB or IG accounts:
