Dog of the Day: Smiling Shiba Inu

I really think this guy could be the spokes-dog for some product or other. Maybe a tavern? “Eat at the sign of the Smiling Shiba Inu?” Or perhaps he’d prefer something a little more in line with his own interests…

I resisted the urge to hovertext this guy with ‘shibe/doge’-speak, but it was a near thing.

Dog of the Day: Coast Guard German Shorthaired Pointer

I recently ran across some ‘Dogs of the Coast Guard’, including this fine Coast Guard German shorthaired pointer. I certainly never knew that the Coast Guard had canine troops, but it seems that they do. In fact, I strongly suspect that this group is the same set that I ran into at the Ferry Building a few weeks back.

I think our armed forces should be entirely composed of dogs. Friendly dogs.

Dog of the Day: Mr Winston Augustus, the Magnificently Attired Poodle

Long-time readers probably sense my rather ambivalent attitude towards dog clothing. Sure, some of it is cute or funny, and sometimes (e.g. Italian greyhounds) it’s basically required if you don’t like hypothermia, but, well, most dogs look better without it. In my opinion, of course, but you don’t tune into this blog to read someone else’s opinion. (Or mine. You tune into this blog to look at cute dog pictures. Wait! I’m getting there!)

Now, there are some exceptions. For me, dogs in boots are just always naturally funny. And nobody ever puts boots on dogs because they want them to look cute… there’s always a good reason, so the hilarity is just a sort of fringe benefit, and one I think we all can live with. Likewise, I think we can all agree that bandanas make any dog fifteen percent more awesome. So when I ran into Mr Winston Augustus, the magnificently attired poodle (aged 6, also known as ‘Dodo’ or, believe it or not, ‘Poodle’) in his gorgeous boots I just had to take some pictures. I ran into him and his dad again about five minutes later and mentioned my theory about dog boots and bandanas to his dad, who proceeded to pull a bandana out of his backpack. Because of course he carries around a bandana. Because of course he shares my opinion. I mean, who wouldn’t?

Winston Augustus is clearly in very good hands. And, of course, shoes.

Got to admit, the high-dynamic-range setting on the iPhone is great. I would never have gotten a shot like this without it. Mind you, it only works for dogs who stand still.

Of course, it still doesn’t help if you don’t turn it on. Sigh.

Dog of the Day: Liam the 11-Week-Old Golden Retriever Puppy

Who could possibly resist an 11-week-old golden retriever puppy? I ran into Liam at the Ferry Building during their farmer’s market, the same day as Gus. Liam was completely exhausted, mostly by having to stop and play with every single person who walked by him. All he wanted to do by this time was sleep, but dad wasn’t quite done, so Liam got a nice ride so he didn’t have to wear himself out any more. Although what he really needed was one of those dog carrier backpacks, so he could have gotten a little sleep.

I have about half a dozen pictures of Liam with some random stranger’s arm in the way. He’s a petting magnet.

Oh, Liam, it’s a good thing you weren’t mine, because I would’ve worn out your ears from the petting of them.

Double Dog Day: Boston Terrier Puppy And Pit Bull Puppy Playing

I ran across a Boston terrier puppy and a pit bull puppy playing ecstatically a couple weeks ago. They were going completely nuts, and everyone nearby was just standing around watching and occasionally bursting into giggles. Of course it’s next to impossible to get good pictures of that, especially in mixed sun and shadows. But I thought these two pictures, from after they’d gotten a bit tired and settled down, were pretty cute too.

Man, it’s been a week of late nights, and I am totally beat. Volunteer work, concerts, a board game night… I’m just a social butterfly, and it is seriously messing with my sleep schedule.

Dog of the Day: Ecco the Husky Pomeranian Mix

Ecco is a huskeranian, or a husky Pomeranian mix, and a more unusual or gorgeous combination it is hard to imagine. He looks like he ought to be some kind of desert fox or coyote or something. And he sure blends into the background nicely, doesn’t he?

Oh, did I mention he’s a puppy? 6 months old. So soft.

I found Ecco in a local fenced in dog park (Rincon Hill Dog Park, to be exact.)

I love the way he blends in, and the way his shadow stands out.

He started bringing me the ball. Well, what was I supposed to do?

Sunday Switchup: Complete Fabrications

My new favorite tag line, coupled with one of my favorite-ever business names. Complete Fabrications is a San Francisco metalworking firm that does custom work. I ran into (in the figurative, not literal sense) one of their trucks and just had to get a picture of it.

Sorry about the double dose of quiet: Friday was a busy day, work capped with some dog-sitting for Autumn (she had two different dog-sitting clients so I helped out with one). Then Saturday was some training for a long dog-sitting gig Autumn has to take care of Tidus, then I had some volunteer work for most of the day, then a Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen concert in Los Gatos, an hour’s drive away. Long and very tiring couple days.

Well, plus it didn’t help that I’m almost out of cat pictures, so I wasn’t sure what I was going to post for caturday even if I did have time.

I totally can’t wait to dogsit Tidus, by the way. He is such a goofy sweetheart.

I love it.

Dog of My Birthday: Gus the Great Pyrenees

Happy birthday to me, huh? Or, at least, if not exactly happy, at least… eventful. Perhaps I’ll tell you all about it someday. At the very least, Autumn and I went out to a rather nice dinner at a very nice restaurant and I’m getting tickets to see a music group I’m rather fond of who happen to be in town this weekend, touring from the East Coast as a present, which is rather nice.

And speaking of rather nice, Gus (the 2-year-old Great Pyrenees) is. He is a giant goofy huggable floofball who is a good boy yes he is. Hobbies include drooling, smooching, shaking, fetching, and melting hearts.

Their ears are so funky. How do you breed an all-white dog with black ear-tips?

Some rules are more honored in the breach than they are in the observance. In both senses of the phrase.

Dog of the Day: Diesel the Yorkshire Terrier

Meet Diesel, Yorkshire terrier of distinction and note, and his mama. Don’t they make a gorgeous pair?

This was taken during a bit of a cold snap. It’s not often it gets close to freezing here during the day.

Dog of the Day: Kona the Basenji German Shepherd Mix

Another breed mix that was reported by the human, in this case mom. Basenjis are pretty unusual dogs around here, so I wouldn’t immediately guess ‘basenji German shepherd’, but Kona does have the build of a slim sighthound, and the tail and face look a bit basenji-y too. And I can definitely see some German shepherd (or Belgian, or a similar dog) in her too.

Regardless, she’s got a very noble look to her, don’t you think? I ran into her while walking in the rain, as you can see, but she didn’t mind at all. I was quite wet, and she was damp, but didn’t seem to mind at all. She looked picturesque as all get-out standing up there on the wall like some kind of canine goddess statue. And amazingly calm and quiet, especially for an 11-month-old puppy.

She’s a natural. I wonder if we can find her a modeling contract?
