Dog of the Day: Kira the White Doberman Pinscher

This was a new one on me: a white Doberman pinscher. I’ve read up on it a bit, and apparently nobody’s quite sure how albinism works in dogs, and whether white Dobermans are actually ‘albino’ in the normal sense of the word or not, but the most recent research seems to indicate, ‘eeeh, close enough’. If you have any interest in such things, this is kind of a neat read (if a bit disturbing in parts.)

I, of course, am quite interested in the science, but ultimately more interested in the dog. Kira is a sweetheart and is quite gorgeous, although I hope her dad doesn’t keep her out in the sun too long because I bet she’s prone to sunburn. She sure did seem to be a little unhappy with the bright light, although she can see and hear just fine.

HDR photography for the win. All the non-HDR shots I got were basically a white blob in the sun…

…and not all that much better in the shade. Well, my fault for going out at noon.

Dog of the Day: Princess the Goldendoodle Puppy

Just one of the many wonderful things about having a ‘morning commute’ that is also a ‘jog through the middle of San Francisco’ is seeing all the dogs on the way to work. (The most important of the many wonderful things, of course!) I was a little bummed out about the end of the weekend, and it was a bit of effort to drag myself out of bed this morning.

But that all changed when I saw Princess, a lovely 11-week-old goldendoodle puppy, gazing sadly at the rest of the dogs in Huntingdon park. The poor pup hadn’t had her final shots yet, so she wasn’t allowed to go play with them all. But she was happy enough to pose for me.

She SO wanted to get out and go meet all the people and the dogs and the fountain and the grass and and and.

In particular, she tried really hard to smooch me. But I’d just been playing with some other dogs, so I had to beg off. THIS TIME.

She had to turn elsewhere for affection. The poor man, being showered in puppy kisses. How could he stand it?

Caturday Supplement: Wolf and Lion Store Tortie

Wolf and Lion, a relatively recent addition to the pet store scene in San Francisco, is down on the Marina, on Lombard Street. (Yes, that’s the crooked one, but the store’s about a mile away from the crooked bit.) And unlike most other pet stores in SF, it has a store cat. Who does not seem to mind the dogs that wander in one bit. Or the people. And who does not seem the slightest bit tempted by the open door. She even helps clean up a bit around the place, it seems. Plus, she’s a tortie, and therefore gorgeous.

Quite a kitty!

She’s also quite tolerant of human visitors. If you give her the slightest hint that you want to pet her she flumps down for you.

Well, okay, maybe she’s not so much helping with the cleaning…

…as viciously attacking neat plastic crinkly-noisy things. Hush. Let me have my cherished misconceptions.

Something very compelling (which I was unable to see or hear) distracted her from her crinkly bit of plastic.

She seemed happy, so maybe those pupils are just ‘it’s really bright outside’. After all, it was.

Dog of the Day: Bleu the Bluenose Pit Bull Puppy

I sprinted across a crowded street to get some pictures of the ridiculous 11-week-old Bleu — our first bluenose pit bull puppy! — only to find, when I went to post them later that day, that they were blurry. I was heartbroken. Although I did collect a minute or two worth of licks from her that I will always treasure, so there was that comfort, at least.

Well, I was going through some old pictures this evening and deleting the ones that were too bad to be useful, and I found that not ALL of them were that blurry. So here you go, have a little Bleu cheesiness as a start to your weekend.

You need to look at that eyebrow. Here, let’s get a front view…

So perfect! How does that even happen?

Dog of the Day: Talulah the English Springer Spaniel

Talulah is eleven years old! I totally had her pegged as a puppy, with that ridiculous puppy ‘fro. But then, I have to admit, I don’t have a lot of experience with English springer spaniels.

PS: Hooray, the latest WordPress update broke picture captions in my theme. Do they look awful (super-tiny text, huge grey box for the text) for everyone, or is it just Mac browsers? I wonder if I’m going to have to sit down and re-learn enough CSS to fix them?

Another breed of dog, like a lot of the spaniels, where I could spend all day petting their ears.

How does this happen? It’s completely ridiculous.

Dog of the Day: Akita Inu

I’m being a bit lazy today, I admit it. I have a dozen dogs lined up with a hundred or more pictures that I have to go through, and like 94 of them are adorable pictures, and I just don’t feel up to choosing right now.

So here’s someone I only got four pictures of. All four of them were good, I chose two, the end. Then again, for an akita inu, I might just as well aim the camera and take one picture, because they only have one apparent mood and it is ‘dignifiedly-awesome’.

Akitas have a reputation for being standoffish, but in this case the dog was quite friendly… it was the owner who was standoffish.

You’d really only need one of these guys to keep you warm in a tent in a snowstorm.

Happy face. This guy was enjoying the crowds.

Dog of the Day: Milli the Golden Retriever Irish Setter Mix Repeat Customer!

If you do not instantly squeal at the sound of the name ‘Milli’ then you have not been reading my blog for long enough and must do some remedial work. Go check out this link here and report back… I’ll wait.

Back? Squealing? Good! I ran into Milli again, now fully two years old and just as happy and friendly, and only marginally less wiggly. Her mom now thinks she’s a golden retriever Irish setter mix, which I can definitely see.

Make sure to check out her latest on her twitter feed, too. Some gorgeous shots there.

She’s still got that same Silli-Milli grin she had in her puppy pictures. So cute.

Mom was at a sidewalk cafe, and Milli got a little something from the table.

Sunday Switchup: Island in a Sea of Clouds

I’m not even sure where this one was, but it sure was pretty… an island in a sea of clouds.

Can be awfully pretty, hiking around the ridges and peaks in the Bay Area.

Caturday Supplement: E.V. Again

Autumn sent me another picture of E. V. that I just had to post.

Black Cat

I really want to meet this cat.

Dog of the Day: Giant Wooly Malamute

I ran across this guy just chilling out in a parking space in Chinatown. His dad was sitting in the car right next to him and studiously ignoring me as he played with his phone. And he continued to do so even when I got near the driver’s side window and the dog decided that replacing him in the driver’s seat was the way to go.

I am almost certainly a bad person for doing this to that poor driver. But y’know what? I’d pay good money to get squooshed by a malamute, so I don’t feel TOO bad about it.

I know someone who is totally infatuated with a certain wooly malamute, so this post is dedicated to her. Even if maybe this dog isn’t quite floofy enough for her.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this was a toy that I had that was already vintage when I was a kid.

He was having a grand old time greeting every person that walked by on EITHER side of the street. No barking… just staring and grinning.

For some reason this guy reminds me of a ‘wolf whistler’. Except I don’t find it offensive when it’s very nearly a wolf that’s doing it.

There, that’s the happy face he was giving people as they walked by.

I was thinking, “Uh… oops?”

Yeah, I’m a little embarrassed to have caused this much disruption, not to mention squooshage. Not embarrassed enough to not snap a picture, admittedly.
