Dog of the Day: Bailey the Puli

A puli! Our first white one. Bailey is 4, and happy as anything and doesn’t have nearly as long dreads as some pulik (the plural) do, which is handy because it means she can see and isn’t quite as hard to keep clean. Plus it’s easier for her to lick people.

Note the tail blur.

There are eyes in there somewhere, I promise.

A good look at those dreads. They’re actually fairly fine.

Dog of the Day: Shy the English Bulldog Puppy

Shy, at 5 months old, was definitely not shy. She loves everybody!

Everyone walking by had to give this gal a wide berth if they didn’t want their ankles smooched.

English Bulldog Licking Her Nose

Puts me in mind of a phrase from a song Autumn is writing: ‘Her tongue was as pink as the ham.’ Yes, it’s a dog song.

Sunday Switchup: Pigeon

I don’t spend a lot of time taking pictures of pigeons, but this one amused me. I took the pictures, and then I went and moved the chip bag out of the street, because although I admit to not being the biggest pigeon fancier in the world, I still didn’t think this one deserved to get run over by a car with his head in a potato chip bag.

I saw him walking over to it, and I thought, ‘Will he?’

Yes, he did.

Caturday Supplement: Leilani, Groom Room Cat

Autumn and I ran into Leilani again on our way home from dinner one night. She’s the store cat at the dog-grooming parlor near our house, the Groom Room. We’ve posted a few pictures of her before but this time she was sitting in the window and begging for attention, even to the point of trying to rub against our fingers through the window. It was so cute.

A very welcoming place.

Autumn got in on the action, so here’s a picture of her taking a picture of the kitty!

Dog of the Day: Harry the Chinese Crested Dog

Hairless dogs always get a pass from me as far as clothes are concerned. I mean, it can get cold out there! And Harry (4 years old) was really rocking this sweater. Also, on a personal note, as I get older I get more and more sympathy for those whose hair seems to be less where it should be — in my case, the top of my head — and more on their ears.

You’re going to be seeing more of those ears. Which is a damn good thing because they are amazing.

Look at that adorable expression, too.

Such an expressive face.

The problem with taking dog pictures is that the dogs are usually either very interested in sniffing everything (so you get pictures of the tops of their heads)…

…or they’re trying to lick you, in which case you end up with very close close-ups. Also: THOSE EARS.

Dog of the Day: Ero the Afghan Hound

Ero is only our second Afghan hound ever, with Oscar here from a year ago as our first. And boy, is Ero gorgeous or what? I wish I had hair like that! (Okay, okay, I wish I had any hair at all.) He’s 8, and apparently a ‘blue brindle’.

Oscar was not the slightest bit interested in meeting me. Ah well. He clearly absolutely adored mom.

Can you imagine how many hours of grooming go into this pup every week?

Dog of the Day: Kira the Silly Shiba

I ran into Kira at a dog-related event. Yes, Kira is very big for a shiba inu. Yes, Kira’s mom is very patient, and very strong. I don’t recall why she was being held like this but she seemed to quite like the point of view.

The dog seemed to really love looking at people upside down. So goofy.

Gooooooofy dog.

Dog of the Day: Foofly Wiener!

I can never get enough Foofly Wieners. So here’s a foofly wiener puppy for you. Hadley (not, alas, Hedley, as I initially thought) is a 4-month-old adorable long-haired dachshund puppy, and he wants to lick YOU!

I tried to get Hadley on the ground but he was completely hyperactive, and somehow his back end always ended up facing me.

Hadley tried mightily to lick my camera, but I was able to stay just out of range.

Dog of Labor Day: James Hutton the Welsh Springer Spaniel (?)

James Hutton is named after the noted Scottish geologist and everything-else-ist. Despite the name, though, this James Hutton (12 years old!) is a Welsh springer spaniel (according to his parents), not a Scottish springer spaniel. And hey, he appears to be our first Welsh springer spaniel, and our first ‘first’ in quite some time. Awesome!

(Hmm… looking at online pictures of Welsh springer spaniels, I’m not sure about this pup… seems kind of small, and not red enough. Anyone know anything about them?)

Happy Labor Day, everyone. May you live long, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Tan And White Spaniel Of Some Kind

I always wonder about the dogs with saggy faces… the red eyes always look a little sore.

Happy face!

The Embarcadero is a great place to walk (and meet) dogs. Plus it has a very appropriate name.

Disgruntled Tan And White Spaniel Of Some Kind

This was the expression after the biscuit in the last picture was momentarily withdrawn. I love it.

Fortunately, James didn’t have to stay disgruntled for long.

Sunday Switchup: (Double-Crested?) Cormorant

Kind of hard to see the differences between some of the cormorant species, but I’ll take a stab anyway.

Black Cormorant

That is one goofy-looking bird.
