Triple Dog Day: A Briard, a German Shorthaired Pointer, and an Akita Walk Into A Bar

Okay, okay, they’re not in a bar, they’re just outside one. They all three met there, and proceeded to sniff butts in high style. I did get the akita’s name (Juneau, age three and a half, a boy) because I had to ask about the breed. I had never seen an akita with husky/malamute coloration before. Neat!

Also, I think the briard might well be Shamus, who was first posted here three years and one day ago!

Briard, Akita, and German Shorthaired Pointer

It was a pretty amazing three-way meeting… almost three hundred pounds of calm, well-mannered dog.

Briard and Akita

The briard had been drinking water in front of a pet store just down the block, and left a nice wet blotch on my jeans. The hazards of dog duty.

Akita, Silver with Black Overlay

Does anyone know what this coloration is called on an akita? It’s gorgeous.

Dog of the Day: Binky the Pomeranian Poodle Puppy

When I saw Binky, I just had to get some pictures. His mom picked him up instantly, because she knew that I didn’t have a prayer of getting anything but a little blur unless she held him still. Well, after all, he’s only 4 months old, so he has a lot of exploring to do.

Black and Gray Pomeranian Poodle Mix Puppy

This is a classic ‘salt and pepper’ coloration in the schnauzer, but since there’s no schnauzer here, I guess it must be a merle pattern from the Pomeranian.

A little blurry, but I couldn’t resist posting the nose shot. Almost looks like a raccoon!

Dog of the Day: Bella Estella the Italian Greyhound

Bella (8) is a lady, dainty and delicate of mannerism, and of course always fashionably dressed!

Fawn and White Italian Greyhound

You can see why they’re so fast… their ears fold back to minimize air resistance.

That little tiny ‘plfft!’ of white at the tip of the tail. So cute!

Dog of the Day: Bob the Mutt

My notes say that Bob is ‘probably a malamute/chow/German shepherd/etc mix’. Well, I’m not sure about that, although I can definitely see some parts of those breeds. It also says that he has his own facebook page, ‘bobthedog’. Well, I couldn’t find him, but maybe someone else can. (Edit: one of my awesome commenters found him right here!)

He’s a little shy and nervous around other dogs, but boy does he loooove people!

I’m not sure what kind of vehicle that is behind him, but yes, that’s a really huge tire.

Bob was an older dog (11-ish). In very good health, and quite fit, but nice and calm too.

Instead of enthusiastically leaping on you and licking you, Bob carefully steps forward and pokes his nose against you, and then gives you a nice smooch.

Dog of the Day: Young English Bulldog

Bulldog kisses are extra-slimy!

Tricolor English Bulldog

That expression.

I ended up lying on my back with this pup on my chest. Not that I minded in the least.

Caturday Supplement: Anna’s Hummingbird

Saw (and heard) this hummingbird in the back yard of Tommaso & Lisa & Watson‘s house. I think it was an Anna’s (probably a female… edit: Tommaso says male, and that they’ve named him Allen), but I’m not 100% sure.

It was evening, so the action shots came out a leeeettle bit blurry.

Dog of the Day: Luca the Wet Golden Retriever

I run into Luca (may actually be ‘Lucca’, not sure) at Huntingdon Park quite frequently in the mornings. He is a happy golden, except when someone else has a tennis ball. (Although it’s okay if someone else has a tennis ball if he has two tennis balls. In his mouth. At the same time.)

Aside from ‘all the tennis balls’, Luca also owns the Huntingdon Park fountain, especially on hot days.

The patented ‘sad golden’ expression. Designed to get the golden in question EXACTLY what he wants in life.

A lovely fountain is only improved by the presence of a lovely dog.

Dog of the Day: Winnie the Utterly Adorable Shiba Inu Puppy

I only ran into Winnie (5 months old) this morning, but I just had to rush her onto the site, because she really is something special. Not only is she one of the cutest puppies I’ve seen in a very long time, but she is one of the most affectionate shibas I’ve ever met: she loves everybody and every-dog. And she is surprisingly strong for her size and is always pulling mom towards anyone whose ankles look the least bit lickable.

Apparently Winnie had parvo when she was little, and she nearly didn’t make it. But now she’s happy and healthy, thank goodness.

Waaaait a minute… look at that shadow. Is it possible that Winnie is BATDOG??

The best natural antidepressant in the world.

That spitz-breed expression again.

Look at that tail. I uncurled it twice, I couldn’t help myself.

Double Dog Day: Chrissie the Finnish Spitz and Gus the Schnauzer/Yorkshire Terrier

A first for us: a full-blooded Finnish spitz! They’re a lot smaller than I expected.

I am reliably informed that Chrissie is super-loyal, and almost 11 years old, and that Gus is 8, and is Chrissie’s companion animal. I think we can all agree that if a human can have a companion animal, it’s only fair if a dog can too.

Thirty-three pictures of these two. In not a single one of them are they both looking in the same direction.

Chrissie was definitely shaved a bit in the not-too-distant past.

Shaved Finnish Spitz

She sure is photogenic.

Schnauzer/Yorkshire Terrier Mix

I’m gonna say that half-schnauzers at least get to half-schnauze.

Shaved Finnish Spitz

The spitz-y breeds sure do have a distinctive way of ‘smiling’.

Shaved Finnish Spitz

Like I said: really photogenic. You can almost see the wind whistling through her fur.

Dog of the Day: Tilly the Australian Shepherd/Irish Music Aficionado Mix

Tilly is the pup of a friend of Autumn’s, who has Irish music concerts at her house on a regular basis. Until quite recently, Tilly would hide in the back room and eventually get let out into the side yard so she wouldn’t freak out. Until last week, when they were having a workshop and apparently (I wasn’t there) Tilly came and sat under Liz Carroll’s chair. She has, after hearing all these concerts from outside, developed excellent musical taste.

And we were there on Thursday to see John Doyle play, and Tilly came right out and hung out and listened in the front row. Until John brought out a friend to play didgeridoo for one number. Tilly, looking quite offended, got up and walked out. But she came back for the next number. A dog of very conservative and traditional tastes, it seems.

Sleeping Australian Shepherd

If you look closely, you can even see that her ears are a little perked up. She periodically looked up at John, especially when he was singing. Too funny.
