Double Dog Day: A Pair of Poms

Two of a kind, except I think the bottom one didn’t have quite such a pronounced underbite as his friend there.

Wonder why such an impressive underbite is such a common problem in dogs?

Dog of the Day: Quigley the Australian Shepherd Mix Puppy

I just realized something: aside from Saturday’s otters, my entire last week has been puppies. I am in terrible danger of spoiling you people.

So, what should I do about this? Why, do it just a little bit more, of course! Here’s Quigley, the wiggly Australian shepherd mix, all of age 5. (I’m not sure what the deal is with all the puppies we have been running into recently, but I’m not in a rush to look that particular gift horse in the mouth.)

Edit: Months. 5 months. That’s why he’s still a puppy. Thank you, Rose Marie.

He reminds me a bit of Watson. Which is to say, ‘adorable’. If not quite as fluffy and a little whiter.

I believe the pup was actually fixated on Autumn, which gave me a chance to take some pictures without him licking the lens. Much.

I love that tail.

Dog of the Day: Tyson the Giant Schnauzer Puppy

Tyson was a rescue puppy from someone who decided that ear cropping was a great idea, and tried the DIY version. Really badly. With any luck, someone cropped that person’s ears in retaliation. Anyway, I decided that it was a bit awkward to ask if they’d named her Tyson because of the boxer’s ear-biting habit. So I’ll let y’all make up your own minds about that.

Tyson was not quite used to the big city yet. All the people, all the noise, and everyone wanting to pet her.

How can you have a schnauzer puppy without grumpy-old-man eyebrows?

Dog of the Day: Henry the Miniature Golden Retriever (Cocker Spaniel Mix) Puppy

A 12-week-old puppy for your Sunday delectation. Autumn and I ran into Henry and his mom when we were out on Polk Street for dinner, and our heads exploded with cuteness.

Henry is the product of attempts to breed a miniature golden retriever, by crossing in cocker spaniels. Some breeders call them ‘comfort retrievers’, and some call them ‘miniature golden retrievers’, but whatever you call them, I’ll take three.

It was tough getting any pictures of Henry at all. I just wanted to drop the camera and give him some love.

Training treats. He really was being surprisingly good, for a twelve-week-old puppy.

A winning strategy: sit at a sidewalk cafe with a dog that cute, instantly make friends with everyone who walks by.

Every single person who walked by while we were there stopped to pet the puppy. And two other people stopped to take pictures.

Otterday Supplement: Newly Relocated Otterpile!

So the Aquarium of the Bay played around with the arrangement of their exhibit, until they managed to relocate the typical sleepy-otterpile that happens when the otters aren’t tearing around and playing to a place where the visitors could watch them wiggle. Too awesome.

Otters always look so dejected when they’re not moving around at high speed.

I love the one in the back.

Dog of the Day: Sampson the Slightly Injured English Bulldog Puppy

I ran into Sampson while he was out having a great time running around and smooching people. He apparently does that a lot, being 5 months old and all, and at doggie day care he ran around and ran into things so hard that he injured his eye. His vet originally thought it was just an infection (and gave his mom some antibiotic ointment) but apparently it’s actually cherry-eye so mom’s going to have it treated. Fortunately, it looks way worse than it actually is, and the prognosis is excellent. (Less than 5% chance of any complications, and even if there are any they’ll probably be easy to treat too.)

I’d like to take this opportunity to give thanks for modern medical care, both for our animals and for ourselves. If anyone has relevant stories, feel free to speak up in the comments.

Oh, and by the way, Sampson has his own Instagram page. You should check it out, it’s awesome. And also, he reminds me of a certain tote bag (and the associated tee shirts at the bottom of the page.)

Don’t look at the eye, look at the little ear spots.

They really are goofy-shaped beasties, aren’t they?

Dog of the Day: Nutmeg the Yorkshire Terrier/Chihuahua Mix Puppy with Bonus French Bulldog

Nutmeg is 6 months old, and I think she’s going to be stuck at the height of cuteness for years. Those EARS, oh my god so ridiculous.

This first picture just makes me smile.

Yorkshire Terrier/Chihuahua Mix With Huge Ears

Oh god so cute. I said I wanted to take some pictures and he scooped her up right away, because she tears around so fast that he figured there was no chance I’d get anything useful when she was on the ground.

Yorkshire Terrier/Chihuahua Mix With Huge Ears

He was more or less right, too. I took 120 rapid-shot pictures of the pup playing, and I deleted over 100 of them. That’s one fast pooch.

If you look close you can see the blue-green tattoos on the puppybelly.

That’s actually a pretty good rendition of Nutmeg’s natural state.

The Frenchie was having a grand old time, even if his expression looks a little dubious here.

The French Bulldog was mostly reduced to running around in Nutmeg’s wake, but he did catch up once or twice.

Dog of the Day: Aiko the 4-Month-Old Labrador Retriever Puppy

I have been having a great few days in terms of puppies. Not sure what it is, but there suddenly seem to be puppies all over the place. Except a few more over the next week or so.

I ran into Aiko on my jog to work, and he was more than happy to do a little posing, though it was kind of foggy so some of his shots came out a bit blurry, unfortunately including the otherwise-awesome nose shot.

Aiko has great recall for a pup her age. Mom yelled, she came scampering.

Kind of a funky halter. Looks like she’s got a red ribbon on.

Aiko seems to be well-balanced between food-motivated (good for training) and affection-motivated (good for cuddles!)

Dog of the Day: Oscar the Afghan Hound

I dunno, somehow this gorgeous pup does not scream ‘Oscar’ to me. I guess I always think of Oscar as ‘that guy from The Odd Couple’ or ‘Oscar the Grouch’.

Also, can you believe it? First Afghan hound! Still finding new dog breeds to post, even after nearly four years.

Even his shadow is fluffy!

They really are gorgeous dogs, aren’t they? (Also, ee, look at that twisty tail!)

Double Dog and Duck Day: Roxy, Begley, and Tank

So Autumn’s family recently got a dog, Begley. And it was pretty clear that he was in great need of companionship when they weren’t home, so they had to get another dog. And so, since the local animal shelters were all really expensive (several hundred dollars for adoption fees!) they went to the local craigslist… where they found someone who was willing to part with her golden retriever, but only if they took the dog’s sister, too.

Yes, the dog’s sister was a duck. Named ‘Tank’. (Who actually thinks of the dog as ‘mom’.)

The two of them are definitely friends, although Tank is a lot more into Roxy than Roxy is into Tank. Still, they have fun together. Begley loves playing with Roxy, but he’s not allowed to play with the duck… he’s just a little bit too enthusiastic.

That duck follows Roxy everywhere. Well, except when she’s in her pen.

Autumn being mean to Begley. 🙂

Two Golden Retrievers Playing

These two never let up. It is ALWAYS playtime.

I wish I’d managed to get the camera up just another few inches. In my defense, though, I didn’t expect them to start ballroom dancing all of a sudden.

Begley, victorious. For about, oh, three seconds.
