Pomba the Rhodesian Ridgeback/German Shepherd Mix From Kinshasa

Pomba from Kinshasa. Say it out loud: it just rolls right off the tongue.

Tan Rhodesian Ridgeback/German Shepherd Mix With Semi-Floppy Ears

Pomba makes a heck of a good goodwill ambassador.

Tan Rhodesian Ridgeback/German Shepherd Mix With Half-Flopped Ears

Someone got an unexpected birthday surprise: she got to pet this fine pup.

The de rigueur nose shot.

Rhodesian Ridgeback/German Shepherd Mix With Very Pronounced Ridge

Look at how pronounced that ridge is.

German Shepherd/Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix With Very Pronounced Ridge

I don’t think I’ve ever met even a full Rhodesian with a ridge that pronounced.

Dog of the Day: Nilla the Auto Spa Pug

I took my car to the ‘Auto Spa‘ the other day for a well-deserved interior cleaning (aka ‘dredge the potato chips from under the driver’s seat’). It wasn’t until I got there that I discovered that this was a true ‘Dogs of SF’ establishment: they have a store dog, Nilla the pug. That, and the fact that they did a great job on my car, officially earns them the DoSF seal of approval.

One-Eyed Pug in a Comfy Chair

Yes, he’s missing an eye. Doesn’t seem to bother him any.

Pug

There is nothing like a pug for giving one the hairy eyeball.

Dog of the Day: Shiba Inu

I know I’m being a bit lazy this week with the editing and stuff. I can only plead time constraints. Work has me coming and going this week.

Shiba Inu

Shiba being shiba. A little skittishness, a little ‘leaning away’ body language, and a whole lot of cute.

Shiba Inu and Woman

Man, shiba. Would it hurt you to smile a little? 🙂

Shiba Inu and Woman

Well, she looks pretty happy with her pup. And since I can’t tell with shiba inus, I choose to believe that he’s pretty happy too.

Dog of the Day: Giant Schnauzer/Golden Retriever Mix

Well, with a tail like that, he can’t be all schnauzer. And besides, his eyebrows aren’t nearly ridiculous enough.

Giant Schnauzer

Someone has finely developed ‘sucker sense’. He spotted Autumn…

Giant Schnauzer

…and leapt to his feet to beg for chin-scratching.

Giant Schnauzer/Golden Retriever Mix

Those ears.

Dog of the Day: Businesslike Chihuahua

Looks like I’m not the only one who has a busy work week this week.

Chihuahua in a Tie

As I recall, mom had this to say: “It took me almost 20 minutes to get it that far on him, at which point I gave up on straightening it and just said, ‘it’s fine the way it is.'”

Dog of the Day: Prince the 3-Month-Old Golden Retriever Puppy

For the first post-Swiss post, may I introduce Prince, the glowy golden angel of happiness and cuddles? He likes gnawing ankles (and the rest of you, too) and dancing and smooches and making people happy.

3-Month-Old Golden Retriever Puppy

Prince loves you. Yes, he knows about all the terrible things you’ve done. But he still loves you.

3-Month-Old Golden Retriever Puppy

The eye-whiskers. Well, I guess he’ll grow into them, right?

Golden Retriever Puppy

Damn shadows.

Dog of the Day: Appenzeller, Perhaps?

We’re going to skip the Caturday Supplement this week, in order to bring you one more day of Swiss dogs. This is especially important because Autumn informs me that we do actually have an Appenzeller in the archives, from last year’s Swiss Dog Day. The only problem is, I can’t figure out which one he is! Can anyone help?

Swiss Mountain Dog Of Some Kind

Contestant Number One! I dunno, he seems a little small… but he could just be young.

Swiss Mountain Dog of Some Kind

Contestant Number Two: a strong contender!

Swiss Mountain Dog of Some Kind

Actually, this is still contestant 2. I just liked this picture.

Swiss Mountain Dog of Some Kind

Contestant number three sure wins in the cuteness category. Look at those EARS. But it’s hard to tell how big he’ll be when he grows up.

Dog of the Day: Bernese Mountain Dog And Friend

And just to round out this week, an old favorite. I posted this before, a long time ago, but I cleaned it up quite a bit since then.

Bernese Mountain Dog Being Hugged By Boy

If you don’t envy this kid just a little, you probably have no soul. But that’s okay. I’m sure a Bernese mountain dog would be happy to lend you part of his.

Bernese Mountain Dog Getting a Belly Rub

After all, they seem to have about four times as much soul as they by rights ought to have.

Dog of the Day: Rose the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Rose is a 4-year-old bundle of love. Just one thing that confuses me: Greater Swisses are supposed to be bigger than Berners, but I haven’t seen many full-grown Berners smaller than Rose. Maybe she’s just petite?

Small Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Ran into this lovely lady on Union Street, a section of town perfectly suited to her elegant ways.

Small Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Wide tongue!

Small Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Yawning

Look at that totally ladylike and dignified tonguetip-curl.

Small Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Rose is super-photogenic. I got perhaps three dozen shots of her that I quite liked. Picking the best ones was tough.

Dog of the Day: Alma the Itchy Berner

Alma is another repeat customer, although last time I saw her I didn’t get to say hi to her dad, since she was tied up outside the Jug Shop.

Bernese Mountain Dog Scratching Herself

Two dog behaviors I find endlessly fascinating: shaking water off and scratching with the hind leg.

Bernese Mountain Dog Scratching Herself

I guess it’s because they’re two behaviors that humans don’t really have direct equivalents of.

Bernese Mountain Dog Scratching Herself

Although the fact that they can look so ridiculously goofy while they’re doing it helps too.

Bernese Mountain Dog

The patented Dog Love Gaze. Guaranteed to melt hearts at thirty paces.

Bernese Mountain Dog

See? How long could YOU withstand that expression?
