Double Dog Day: Boo-Boo the German Shepherd and… (I forget!) the Malamute

Ran into these guys just out in front of my apartment building, in deep discussion with one of my neighbors. And of course, busybody that I am, I had to butt in and take some pictures. Hope I wasn’t too terribly annoying.

And of course we got the names of the two pups, but I didn’t record them fast enough and both Autumn and I forgot the malamute’s name. So pretty!

Alaskan Malamute

This is a 'please give me more attention I love attention' behavior. I can certify that it is effective.

German Shepherd

On the other hand, this is a 'I'm not so sure about you please don't get too near me' expression. It didn't work: mom had to warn me away.

Roll of 28(+1) Day 6: Chuck the Chuck

Something intentionally non-dog-related today. This must be one of the signs of the apocalypse. Fire, floods, famine, cats and dogs living together, and Whole Foods advertising $2 wine.

If you’re not familiar, the ‘Chuck’ they’re referring to is the famous Trader Joe’s ‘Two-Buck Chuck’, a wine with a very… distinctive flavor. Which is to say, it tastes a lot like someone took a very, very young wine (and I know nothing about wine, so when I say it’s young, you know it must taste like paint thinner) and diluted it with water. I must admit, I’m quite curious to see what Whole Foods has to compete with it. I’ll pick some up on the way home tomorrow or the next day and we’ll see what it’s like.

Chuck the Chuck

That's quite a ... violent looking emblem you guys have there.

Dog of the Day: Bull Mastiff Smooches

Treat this as a preview for the Golden Gate Kennel Club’s dog show. It’s going to take a while for me to go through the thousand or so pictures we took and pick out the eleven that aren’t blurry. (On the wish list for next year: an f1.4 50mm lens. It’s dark in there!)

Bull Mastiff

An imponderable for you: how many Chihuahuas can dance on the head of a bull mastiff?

Roll of 28(+1): Day 5

It’s funny, I’ve spotted more dog-related paraphernalia in stores in the last three months than I have in the entire prior two years. And it’s not like I’m suddenly looking for it… I’ve been doing this blog for pretty much that entire time. Maybe I’m out ahead of the curve here?

Dog of the Day: Rex the Russian Spaniel Mix

Алло, да, это собака!

It’s nice that my four years of Russian class hasn’t left me utterly helpless in the face of Russian-ness. For example, when I meet a beautiful Russian woman of mystery on the streets of San Francisco, I know exactly what to do: take pictures of her dog.

And so, may I introduce Rex, the Russian Spaniel mix, a recent Russian emigre.

Russian Spaniel Mix

I would expect a city with such a large Russian population to have more Russian dogs.

Russian Spaniel Mix

Russian spaniels normally have tails. Wonder what this guy was mixed with, or if he just got cropped or lost his in an accident?

Russian Spaniel Mix

Looking at that tail stub, it looks like it might well have been an accident.

Roll of 28(+1): Day 4

I said most of these wouldn’t be dogs. Today’s is, because today I didn’t take anything else, and I didn’t really have any daylight left after I found out about this thing.

Still… unedited. And I quite like the shot.

Labradoodle

Leaping Labradoodles, Batman!

Roll of 28(+1): Days 1 through 3

M.C. over at The House of Two Bows has started doing something called ‘Roll of 28’ (+1, this year) where, every day in February, you post a picture that you took that day. I think that sounds like fun, and I’m going to try to do it. Obviously, I’m cheating for the first three days, since I’m posting them today, but each one was in fact taken on that day.

They’re mostly going to be pictures of other things besides dogs (though some will be dog-related, as with Friday’s), and I’m going to post them unedited. It’ll force me to try and do a little more composition in the camera rather than just pointing and clicking and letting Photoshop sort it out.

So, without further ado, some pictures:

Giant Glass Cherry

Feb 1: This is a major theme in the current window display at Macy's. Yes, it's a giant orange glass cherry. No, I'm not sure why.

Garage Door Mural

Feb 2: A recent garage door mural on Marina Auto Body. Which is, incidentally, in SOMA. Go figure.

Another little shop near Union Square (on Sutter near Powell.) Kinda goofy!

Caturday Supplement: More Macy’s Kittens

Gonna run out of these pretty soon if I keep doing them weekly. Hopefully I can get some more from other places.

In other news: argh! I can’t believe I just plain forgot to post yesterday. I had some problems during lunch break (oh, the restaurant I wanted to go to is closed, okay, I’ll go here where there’s a 40-person line, okay, how about there where… etc) but I could’ve at least posted last night. Oh well, nobody’s perfect.

Kittens

Tiger-tabby! They're what I think of when I think 'cat'.

Kittens

If I had a cat, I would probably still be in bed right now, rubbing a kittybelly.

Double Dog Day: German Shepherd Mix and Chow Mix

German Shepherd Mix? Almost definitely. Chow mix? Who knows. Distinctive as heck though!

(Had a good-sized post I was planning on for today, but business-lunch took more time than I expected, so you get a short one. Soon though.)

Edit: Steph over at ‘Musings of a Biologist and Dog Lover‘ has done a detailed breakdown of what she believes the genotype and breed mix of the ‘chow mix’ are, here. Check it out, it’s well worth a read. Dog genetics is a fascinating subject to me… I mean, really, how do you start with a wolf on one side and end up with a West Highland white terrier and a Bernese mountain dog on the other, just by twiddling a few genes?

German Shepherd Mix and Chow Mix

Tee hee! The ears! The goofy expression! Gawd, the one on the left kills me.

German Shepherd Mix and Chow Mix

This one just looks like he was made out of spare parts. Ridiculous.

Dog of the Day: American Akita Inu and Unknown Mix

Not sure about the victim’s breed, but the one on top is definitely an American Akita. Never realized until recently how big those guys actually are: they average more than 100 lbs! In fact, they’re the only breed that averages over 100 lbs that lives, on average, longer than ten years (according to the best survey I could find). And so pretty!

Plus we have a bonus white foofly dog. Autumn and I always have trouble identifying them.

Akita Inu, Unknown Mixed Breed, and Small White Fluffy Dog

Watching dogs play can be so disconcerting when you've never owned one. When the teeth are out, it looks scary as hell, even though every other indicator says that they are having a blast.

American Akita Inu and Unknown Mixed-Breed Dog

I love the placement of the akita paws.
