Dog of the Day: Golden Retriever

A goofy golden with a twisty tail! Supposedly this pup is all golden, but I’ve never seen one with a tail that curly before.

Golden Retriever

Now that's a distinctive collar. And I am assured that this pup has the personality to match.

Dog of the Day: Old Weimaraner

This old gentleman was out for his afternoon walk when I caught up with him. And, while he was clearly slowing down in his old age, he made it clear that an old dog could still teach me a new trick or two.

Weimaraner

He had a hind leg taped up for safety, but he wasn't limping. The canine version of a precautionary Ace bandage, no doubt.

Weimaraner

Super-soft adorable floppy Weimaraner ear.

Dog of the Day: Shetland Sheepdog

Shelties are so poofly! And happy! And other things that require exclamation marks!

And so little, for a dog that was meant for herding sheep. Well, if corgis can herd cows, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that these guys can manage sheep.

These are more pictures from the dog-fest we went to in the Castro last month.

Sheltie

Some of the dogs were a little shy or overwhelmed by the large number of people and/or dogs. Not this one, though.

Shetland Sheepdog

It was obvious that she found every single person around her to be just another potential source of skritches.

Sheltie

Shelties have some of the sweetest faces, especially when they're happy.

Dog of the Day: Alaskan Malamute

FLUFFY MALAMUTE BUTT!

Alaskan Malamute

If I ever go winter camping again, I want to borrow one of these pups to cuddle up with.

Dog of the Day: Bloodhound

Finally, a bloodhound! I was wondering when I’d manage to nab one of these. I know of a couple, but they spend their days in a furniture store that I almost never go by when it’s open. Only been in there twice, and both times they’ve been asleep. And I’m not mean enough to wake them up just to take pictures.

Also, this gal was in the process of being adopted from Rocket Dog Rescue. If you’re in SF and looking for a dog, make sure you check out their web page.

Bloodhound

Aww. Looks like someone's found a new friend!

Bloodhound

I think she may be the least saggy bloodhound I've ever seen. Looks full-grown, too.

Dog of the Day: Goofy German Shepherd Mix

Those ears are really something else.

German Shepherd Mix

Autumn calls them 'airplane ears'. In this guy's case it's not hard to see why.

Dog of the Day: Australian Cattle Dog (?) Puppy

Think I got that right. He looks cuddly as a pug in a rug.

Australian Cattle Dog Puppy

Is it just me, or is that a distinctly come-hither look?

Blue Heeler Puppy

Umm... up periscope?

Dog of the Day: Motown Superfly the Peruvian Hairless

Our second hairless dog, and the first Peruvian hairless. And yes, his name really is ‘Motown Superfly’. Possibly ‘Mo’ for short?

Peruvian Hairless Dog

Someone looks like he may have had a wee bit too much to drink last night.

Peruvian Hairless Dog

Yes, it turns out that the ears are fully extensible.

Peruvian Hairless Dog

Here's a shot that shows his nametag and hoodie to best effect. Skull-and-crossbones with a star eyepatch.

Peruvian Hairless Dog

Hee. I can't remember if this is a game, or if he was being disciplined for something.

Peruvian Hairless Dog

I love the expression of the dog in the back. "Dude... what happened to YOU?"

Peruvian Hairless Dog

Mommy smooches are the best kind of smooches.

Dog of the Day: Cooper the Border Collie/Flat Coated Retriever Mix

Sorry for the late post. Trying to get rid of a head cold. Ugh.

Haven’t run into any flat-coat mixes before. He almost looks like a pure border collie, but he doesn’t quite have that ridiculous ‘eyes boring into your soul’ intensity that a pure border collie tends to have. His dad says he’s calmer than a pure border collie, too, which is funny: flat coats tend to be a bit hyper and puppyish, and border collies are energetic, active, and can end up neurotic if they don’t get enough mental (and physical) exercise. And the combination is calmer than either one alone? Don’t look at me, I’m not Mendel.

He lives less than two blocks from my house, and I’ve been taking pictures for almost a year and a half now, and I’d never seen him yet. There are a lot of dogs in San Francisco.

(Edit: Added the pup’s name. For more info about him, check out the comment from his dad, in the comments section.)

Border Collie/Flat Coat Retriever Mix

This guy came from a border collie rescue, but you couldn't tell it by his attitude.

Border Collie/Flat Coat Retriever Mix

From the side, he looks like he's just black with tan socks, but he has that white chest and belly hidden away.

Flat Coat Retriever/Border Collie Mix

The famous 'baroo' puppy head tilt! He clearly doesn't quite know what to make of me.

Half Flat Coat Retriever, Half Border Collie

Dogs do such goofy things with their tongues. I should make that a tag: dogs doing goofy things with their tongues.

Dog of the Day: Happy Mutt!

This gal is a puzzler. She looks like he has some hound in her, and maybe some Lab, and god knows what else. And she has weird fur! The white fur is a single coat, and is fairly coarse — not quite on the ‘wire-haired’ level, but coarser (and longer) than Lab fur. But the brown/black spots have a noticeably different texture: they’re much softer. Never seen that before.

Mixed Breed Dog

If you look close you can see a tiny flash of pink puppy belly!

Mixed Breed Dog

What a sweet face. Looks so friendly!
