Dog of the Day: Borzoi

I’ve been hunting one of these pups for ages, ever since Autumn and I saw two of them wandering down Franklin Street in Pacific Heights a couple of years ago. I finally found one, and it turns out it was almost certainly one of those very dogs, two years and half a city away.

They’re so elegant. They make me think of the Russian nobility. You know. Minus all the blood and, uh, weirder bits.

Borzoi, aka Russian Wolfhound

Borzoi are also known as Russian Wolfhounds. They make the Irish ones look awfully scruffy and giant and clumsy... although, let's be honest: if I was up against a wolf, I know which one I'd want on my side.

Borzoi, aka Russian Wolfhound

They look as streamlined as greyhounds, but that long floofly fur must come in very handy in the Russian winters.

Nothing can smile like a borzoi.

Dog of the Day: Mickey the Jindo

Another new breed for me, the Korean Jindo dog, named after Jindo Island, off the coast of Korea. They’re a feral dog type (think dingo) from that island, which is getting a bit of popularity here in the states.

I am told that Mickey is a bit of an ambassador, having been on television in connection (somehow) with the San Francisco Giants, although I can’t find any mention of this online. Nonetheless, he’s clearly a handsome devil, either way.

Korean Jindo Dog

Mickey was just chilling out underneath a park bench, while his dad sat on top of the bench. They both looked like they were right where they wanted to be.

Korean Jindo Dog

Pretty face. Actually interesting how similar they ended up to a dingo. Maybe a little less awkward-looking, though.

Dog of the Day: Trout Teaser

This is Trout, the pup that Autumn dogsat this weekend. I’ll be posting more of him later on, but right now I’m still hashing out the last of my computer problems, so all you get is a little taste of Trout. (And yes, Trout is an East Bay dog. But I’m sure he’s been to San Francisco at least once. 😛 )

Trout is part pit bull, part border collie, part Lab, and part something little (since he’s smaller than any of those dogs. Rather than say all that, though, I’d rather just say he’s a new breed. Maybe we could call it ‘fishdog’, with the official breed name ‘Troutulous Ridiculousus’.

On the up side, so far it looks like my computer fixes are working, so things should be back to approximately normal (albeit extremely busy at work) tomorrow.

Trout the Pit Bull/Labrador Retriever/Border Collie Mix

More Trout, less blurry, later this week, I promise.

No Dog of the Day

I am having some serious computer issues. Like my laptop’s hard drive has gone south in a big way.

The good news: I have a very current backup. (Like, I don’t think I’m missing a single file.) The bad news: I still don’t have a damn hard drive to replace it with, at least at the moment.

Hopefully be back up and running soon.

Dog of the Day: …Something Small and Fluffy…

Hmm. Nope. Not a clue.

Small Unknown Fluffy Dog

Whatever he is, he looked awfully disgruntled...

Small Miscellaneous Fluffy Dog

...especially for someone who obviously got (and loved!) so much affection. Must just be a facial features thing.

Double Dog Day: English Mastiff and Pit Bull (Mix?)

I have secondhand information that says that the pup on the right is a mastiff/pit bull mix, but if so, he sure doesn’t show much mastiff.

That’s okay, though. The other guy shows plenty of mastiff for the both of them.

English Mastiff and Pit Bull

People in San Francisco know who is dangerous and who isn't. Just about everyone who walked by stopped to pet these two.

English Mastiff

Such utterly ridiculous heads. My god, they're like muppets!

Dog of the Day: Airedale Terrier

I’ve never met an Airedale before. They sure are big!

Airedale Terrier

Yes, these were taken at the South Beach Cafe. No, I never eat there. Just doesn't... float my boat.

Airedale Terrier

Not an expression I normally associate with terriers. That's the 'OMG you're a PERSON! I LOVE PEOPLE!' expression.

Airedale Terrier

I don't remember exactly what happened to his leg, but it was apparently healing up nicely.

Airedale Terrier

Ridiculous muppet face with airplane ears.

Airedale Terrier

Here comes the schnoz of dooooom! (Also, Apple's spelling dictionary recognizes 'schnoz'. Awesome.)

Dog of the Day: German Shepherd/Pembroke Welsh Corgi Mix

Just a guess, but with the short legs, saddle markings, and insatiable appetite, I think I have a pretty good chance at being right.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi/German Shepherd Mix

I don't know what the deal is with his eyes. It's probably just an angle-and-reflection thing, I guess?

German Shepherd/Corgi Mix

Yes, that is a hovering french fry. Clearly he's not blind, if he can catch french fries out of the air.

German Shepherd/Corgi Mix

Gorgeous and very distinctive fur.

Dog of the Day: Naughty Flat-Coated Retriever

This guy’s a little bit on the mischievous side. The container marked ‘good dog’ is full of dog biscuits. But in theory, it’s the human that’s supposed to decide whether the doggie’s been good, and give him a treat if he has. In this case, the pup decided to short-circuit the whole process and snaffle the entire bowl of treats. (Well, try to, anyway. Dad was a bit too alert to let him do that.)

(Sorry for the short posts the last few days. Been having some computer issues, and some cell phone issues, and some sleep issues, and a visitor (my brother Brad… hi Brad!). A bigger one or two soon, I promise.)

Flat-Coated Retriever

Now, if he were a Great Dane, he could just walk up on all fours and just poke his nose into the bucket.

Dog of the Day: Golden Retriever

A goofy golden with a twisty tail! Supposedly this pup is all golden, but I’ve never seen one with a tail that curly before.

Golden Retriever

Now that's a distinctive collar. And I am assured that this pup has the personality to match.
