(Slightly Late) Dog of the Day: Flat-Coated Retriever

So, for those of you who think that ‘flat-coated’ is a silly name for such a fluffy dog, let me tell you why they’re called that.  Apparently, before there were Labrador retrievers at all, there were two similar dogs.  One was the flat-coated retriever.  The other was the curly-coated retriever.  They’re both pretty rare these days.  The flat-coat was fluffy compared to the Labrador, but then, most dogs are.  The curly-coated is, well, definitely curly.  And looks kind of goofy to me.  (By the way, sorry for the late post.  Looking for an apartment is time-consuming, but applying for one (especially when you really, really, really want it, and there are at least four other people ahead of you for it) is very time-consuming, and mentally draining as well.  On the upside, I didn’t have any trouble getting to sleep last night.)

Anyway, flat-coats don’t look goofy.  They look awesome.  (One more pic, after the break!)

Flat-coated retrievers have really soft coats, and are considered 'eminently pettable' by our team of top judges.

Dog of the Day: Bolognese?

Not actually sure what this guy is.  Autumn says it might be a Bolognese.  If anyone knows any better, please do chime in.

In any case, it was definitely very curious and interested in us.  It was in a dog grooming place, where I hope they managed to get rid of those stains.  I always felt sorry for the dogs that got them… they look kind of icky.

Pity this guy was behind glass because he was very eager to play with us.

Dog of the Day: English Mastiff

These guys always look so worried, don’t they?

Worried? Concerned? Sad? One of those, anyway.

Super Serendipity Bonus Birthday Puppy PAIR!

If you didn’t see the previous post to this one, check that out first.

So, for lunch, I walked down to Safeway to pick up an apple, and from there to Subway, to pick up a sandwich. And who should I meet on the way to Safeway but Bailey and his mom again!  I told her I’d posted the pictures on my blog, and she said she’d look at them.  And I said hello to Bailey, and got another picture, and then went in to Safeway again.

And when I came out… there was Bailey.  And there was Jackson!  (More pictures, and Dogs of SF’s first video, below the break!)

Bonus Birthday Dog: Yellow Lab Puppy!

I figured on posting a bonus dog today, because it’s my birthday.

What I didn’t figure on was running into this guy on the way to work this morning. I didn’t even walk, I took the bus, so there was a very limited time for me to run into dogs. But I lucked out, and I just had to rush this guy to press, because he’s super-cute.

I even have some vital stats on him: his name is Bailey, and he’s about 9 weeks old.  (Three more pictures after the break.)

Puppies are amazing. They run the full gamut of emotions in thirty seconds, over and over again.

Dog of the Day: Doberman Pinscher

Our first Doberman Pinscher!

I’ve always thought Doberman Pinschers looked kind of intimidating… big, slim, fast, and… pointy. Sharp ears, sharp muzzle. Dangerous. It didn’t help that I was knocked around by a neighbor’s Doberman when I was a kid, although even then I knew that that dog, in particular, wanted nothing more than to lick my face. He had pretty hideous breath.

This guy was a little more restrained.  Quite friendly, in fact, in a not-terribly-attentive sort of way. I suspect he had something else to pay attention to.

Obviously an extremely alert dog.

Dog of the Day: Nervous Vizsla

This was one of the pictures that fed my (incorrect, to judge from the responses I got) assumption that Vizslas were a little skittish. You can see he’s not quite sure what to make of me, and he doesn’t look too happy to be forced to find out. Once I spent a couple minutes letting him sniff me, he decided I didn’t seem too threatening and let me pet him, but he was never very comfortable with it.

Could be he was a rescue dog that came from a bad situation, or something like that. Or maybe he just wasn’t having a good day… lord knows I’ve had days where I felt like that.

Doesn't that expression just make you want to hug him and tell him everything's going to be all right?

Double Dog Day: Rottie with Bonus Collie/Lab (?) mix

These two are really pretty, and are obviously good friends. Check out how that Rottweiler is sitting, too. The other guy looks to Autumn like a Collie mix, maybe mixed with lab. With the tougher ones, I just nod and smile; she’s the expert.

Dog of the Day: Red Australian Shepherd

I ran into this sweetheart while walking to work along the Embarcadero.  In the pictures she seems to have a bit of what might stereotypically be called a ‘hangdog’ expression… she was like that in person, too.  I don’t think she was sad, or scared, really, though… she’s just kinda old, and maybe tired.

Her name is ‘Fergie’, aka ‘Maude Ferguson of Flanders’, for reasons that I will not get into here. 🙂  Couple more pictures after the break.
