Dog of the Day: Australian Shepherd

Another sheepy-pup from down undah! They’re a very popular breed in San Francisco, since they act more like a big dog and weigh more like a medium-small dog.

They’re a dangerous breed, though. Not because they bite or anything, but because they’re very, very smart, and if you don’t give them plenty of things to keep their minds busy, they’ll find their own entertainment. This can be very bad for a large variety of home furnishings, home electronics, houseplants, and so on.

Another picture after the break.

I hear Aussies are low-maintenance, even with that coat. I bet that's not true if they ever get into burrs, though.

Dog of the Day: Very Patient Rottweiler

I know I just posted a Rottweiler recently, but I’ve seen this guy a few times and never got a good picture of him before, so I just had to post him now that I’ve gotten a few. His owner must like coffee a lot, because I see him out in front of the Starbucks on King Street near the train station an awful lot, waiting super-patiently out there in his little collapsable crate.

Sometimes it rains. When it rains, he just pulls his head inside and stays nice and warm and dry. It’s like a portable doghouse! How awesome is that? I mean, it’s maybe not so awesome that he spends that much time sitting outside a Starbucks, but if he’s going to, he sure is well-equipped for it.

Two more crate-tacular pictures, after the break.

When suddenly, emerging from the darkness, we see the shape of... is that... could it be... eyebrows?

Dog of the Day: Boston Terrier

Another – how shall I put this? – goofy-looking guy. The woman walking him was so proud of him, I didn’t want to laugh. Or make jokes. It would have been so mean.

Another two goofy pictures, after the break.

He's looking both ways, all right. Not shown: him sticking his nose up my pant leg and being generally super-friendly.

Dog of the Day: Black Labrador Retriever

A rarity: three pics of this guy on the front page. Because you just can’t get the full effect without seeing all three pictures right in a row.

I ran into him in one of the park areas along the Embarcadero, and boy was he having the time of his life.

I've seen some bad cases before, but this is one of the worst I've ever seen.

This pup is bound to come to no good end if he doesn't reform his ways soon.

Yes, the results aren't pretty when your dog becomes (...wait for it...) addicted to grass. (Okay, you can groan now.)

Dog of the Day: Golden Mix

Not sure about the ID on this one. Definitely looks gold-ish, though, doesn’t she?

And there's the other reason I think she's part golden: look at that goofy grin.

Dog of the Day: Rottweiler

Another Rottie, for today. They’re not a breed I’ve spent a lot of time with, but I like them. The eyebrows always make them look goofy, and they often seem quite happy to reinforce that opinion by dancing around and acting all silly. Which is one of the better hobbies a dog can have.

Incidentally, did you know that it’s apparently proper to capitalize ‘Rottweiler’ because it’s a place name? As in ‘Ich bin ein Rottweiler’. Not-so-incidentally, there are two more pictures after the break.

Look at that sweet face. I've heard some people say Rottweilers are dangerous. I've been bitten by Chihuahuas. I've only been drooled on by Rottweilers.

Dog of the Day: Barbet

Apparently this guy is a barbet, also known as a ‘French water dog’. That’s the second water dog we’ve had in the last week. Then again, I guess that’s appropriate: it’s been a very wet season here in San Francisco.

The shading is interesting. I can't remember if his legs were wet, or if they are just a lot darker than the rest of him.

Dog of the Day: Weimaraner

I had to spend a little quality time with Wikipedia making sure this guy was a weimaraner and not a vizsla: he’s very brown for a weimaraner, but very grey for a vizsla. However, if he were a vizsla, his nose would blend in more with his fur color. Ergo, he’s a weimie.

Two more pictures, after the break.

A very poised dog. Look at the expression. I wonder if he's show-trained?

Dog of the Day: Spanish Water Dog

First off: sorry about the lack of a post yesterday. Autumn and I are stressing out really badly right now: we’re trying to move into a new place, and it’s a really bumpy ride. I’ve been suffering from insomnia because of it, and so when I was starting to nod off last night at 11 PM, I hopped right into bed in the hopes of a good night’s sleep. Result: woke up at 3 AM, lay awake in bed until 7. Bah.

Second off: the dog. Autumn and I aren’t sure about this guy, so we made our best guess. He’s either a Spanish water dog or a puli, we think. And since we’ve already posted a puli, we’re calling this guy a Spanish water dog. That’s our story, and we’re sticking to it, at least until someone tells us different.

Anyway, I ran into this guy a few weeks ago, on the way to work. He was very interested in everyone who walked by. Most of the other people gave him a really wide berth, but I said hi, and as my reward, collected a few licks. (One more slightly blurry picture after the break.)

Whatever that is he has attached to him, it was perfect: he could stick his head out the window, but he couldn't climb out, and it was just short enough that he couldn't hit his head on the windshield.

Dog of the Day: …Lab Mix…?

Okay, I’ll admit it: Autumn and I really don’t have much idea what breeds this guy is. I mean, there’s definitely some resemblance to a Labrador retriever. Autumn thought maybe there was some Husky in there too. I think he might be part raccoon: check out the tail. Or possibly he’s part skunk, with the white stripe that’s supposed to be down his back going down his chest and tummy instead. (Sadly, I only have one picture of him… but I think you’ll agree that he’s still well worth posting. Please, if you have any idea what he could be, leave a comment after the break!)

Carefully erect, alert stance: check. Sidelong glance: check. Diagnosis: a very very good dog, who has a little extra curiosity too.
