Dog of the Day: Skye the German Shepherd Husky Lab Mix

I sat next to Skye the German shepherd husky Lab mix at an outdoor cafe. I distracted her horribly from her rawhide chew. I was, of course, terribly sorry.

Her parents were mildly annoyed, actually, so I really did feel a little sorry. As well as being a little flattered when I was more interesting than her rawhide chew. (No, it wasn’t our food, because it started long before we got our food.) But mostly I just felt happy to meet her.

Skye knows a number of tricks.

Those eyes.

You can see why I was flattered that she preferred me petting her. She was definitely a fan of the rawhide chew.

Dog of the Day: Barkley the Goldendoodle

Took this picture at Wags, the famed ‘dog wash of Polk Street’. They really are the best show in town… stand outside and you can see all sorts of dogs playing with each other, resting, jumping around, or just hanging out. And the people there really love the pups, as you can see.

I think Barkley was a puppy, but I’m not sure… could be just a small doodle.

Dog of the Day: Peace the Bernese Mountain Dog

This is Peace, and she is every bit as gentle as her name implies. Her dad provided a bit of back-story: she was a rescue (how lucky is that? a rescue Berner?) who came with the name, and he thought it was kind of corny, but by the time he started thinking about changing it she was already used to it, and, well, so was he. And now she’s six years old, and the name fits her like a glove.

Certainly lived up to her name around me: polite, gentle, and the friendliest thing on four feet.

Caturday Supplement: Pretty Kitty

From a cat meetup in the park a few years back.

Stripy Kitty

Turns out that shaking your keys is a good way to get a nice picture of a kitty.

Dog of the Day: Wiley the Tricolor Collie

When I think of a collie it’s always a tricolor collie. Lassie is to blame for that, I guess. Lassie, the dog with the name that meant ‘girl’, who played a boy dog on screen, but who was actually a girl. Versatile actor, cute dog, what’s not to like?

Wiley (2 years old) is pretty adorable too. And quite well-trained: he knows sit, lie down, shake, other paw, and speak, at the very least.

A lot of people like walking their dogs down the raised concrete on the Embarcadero.

Another trick he seems to have mastered instinctively is ‘be all friendly’.

Dog of the Day: Tidus the Corgi

Tidus is probably the most frequently-posted dog on our little blog here. Not hard to see why, is it?

He plays a lot more with Autumn than he does with me, but sometimes he can be persuaded.

Dog of the Day: Valhalla the Pug German Shepherd Mix

I would never have guessed this guy’s breed in a million years. I’m not saying it’s impossible, or even unlikely: he has a bit of saddle marking to him, his fur is no fluffier than a moderate German shepherd, his muzzle is shorter than a shepherd, his ears are half flopped, and he’s pretty much just in between the two in size. (He’s 3, so no longer a growing puppy.)

But… pug German shepherd mix? Really? That’s almost harder to imagine than Chihuahua German shepherd mix. They’re just such amazingly… different dogs.

And, related to nothing, it’s amusing how many dogs I’ve run into named after Norse mythological constructs recently. Lots of Thors, Lokis, a couple of Odins, a Freya, and now a Valhalla, and all within the last year or two. Not so much before that. Is this all straight out of the Thor and Avenger movies, or is there something else I don’t know about going on?

Ran into Valhalla in an area of the city I rarely get to. There were lots of dogs I hadn’t seen before, I ought to go back sometime.

Fully convertible ears are my new favorite thing. They come with their own sound effect: ‘fwip!’

Dog of the Day: Jackson the Fluffy Golden Retriever Puppy

I was wandering around down near Chestnut Street a couple of weeks ago and I saw a knot of people gathered around something. For a moment I was worried someone was lying on the ground, injured, but it turned out to just be the cutest thing ever: Jackson. Jackson is the platonic ideal of the fluffy golden retriever puppy. His ears are velvet, his belly is pink, and his attitude will melt your heart.

Incidentally, this is not the first golden retriever puppy named Jackson we’ve seen on this blog.

Caturday Supplement: Rainy Day Cat

It’s been raining a lot here this year, aside from February. We’re all pretty glad about it, although it’s not enough to make up for the drought we’ve been having for the past few years.

Well, I say we’re all pretty glad about it, but actually some of us are pretty grumpy, really. This kitty was just sitting in a window and watching the raindrops, and did not seem terribly impressed.

Sleepy Kitty

Sleepy kitty. As I walked by she picked up her head and peeked at me, and then she went back to sleep.

Dog of the Day: Sage the Pomeranian Mix Rescue

Sage is a Pomeranian mix rescue, rescued quite recently in fact. I ran into her and her mom on my way to work, in Huntingdon Park. Well, actually I ran into her mom first, running around the park and calling out, ‘Sage! Sage?’ It seems that this recent rescue was running around the park and maybe got a little lost and ran out of the park, and gave her mom quite a scare.

Of course I immediately had to join the hunt. I jogged some nice circles around the park and wandered up and down several different roads nearby, before some nice gentleman brought her back. I don’t think she’s going to be wandering quite so far in the future.

Neither one seemed at all inclined to separate.

Sweet face! She’s an older girl, I seem to recall 8 or so, but Poms live a long time.
