Adoptable Dog of the Day: Lily the Blind Pit Bull Mix

I went to the doctor’s office on Wednesday morning for something which really, really I hope will turn out to have been nothing major (a drug sensitivity, perhaps), but which is kind of freaking me out a bit right now. I intentionally left home early so I could walk to the doctor’s office, about two and a half miles, and stop for some canine therapy. But I wasn’t expecting to run into three gorgeous puppies. I’ll tell you what, it did wonders for my state of mind.

And in at least one case, maybe I can return the favor. Met Lily, officially ‘White Lily‘, available for adoption from Family Dog Rescue in San Francisco. She’s still a puppy, ten to eleven months old. She’s blind, but doesn’t let that bother her one bit. She’s great with people, with kids, with other dogs, with cats, and most likely with pretty much anything you throw her way. Sounds like a heck of an opportunity for someone.

Lily has a deceptively lost and forlorn look. Be warned: she will lick you and beat you with her tail and just generally happy all over you if you get near her. And you will LIKE IT.

Look at that face. Who could say no to that face?

Dog of the Day: Blue Merle Cardigan Welsh Corgi

I had a dog I wanted to post today, but I’m having some issues with the new ‘live photos‘ feature on my iPhone. The issue is: live photos of dogs are just too damn cute! They’re ridiculous! But they can’t be easily worked with in my preferred program, Aperture, and they can’t be cropped or edited with any program that I know of. And I don’t want to offload them from my phone until I know what I’m going to do with them, so for now you’ll have to put up with another corgi.

Oh no, I hear you wailing, not another corgi! That will surely be one corgi too many! No, trust me on this, you will like this guy. He is the happiest thing on sand. And there are a lot of things on sand, including about a third of San Francisco. Or Sand Francisco. (About 1/3 of which is ‘Sand’, so I guess that makes sense, right?)

Dog of the Day: Corgusky

The most prevalent mix I saw at CorgiCon was the ‘corguski’, half corgi and half husky. I’m not sure there was any special reason, it just worked out that way.

They are hilarious.

Corgi Husky Mix Turning Around

Little-known fact: corgis and corgi mixes are articulated in the middle, like those long MUNI busses.

The reason is not known, but it is suspected that it is so they can turn around more quickly when someone drops a potato chip on the floor behind them.

Dog of the Day: Pembroke from CorgiCon

I am not even going to try to post all of my CorgiCon pictures on the same day. I’ll try to resist giving you the ‘all-corgi’ channel for the next two weeks too. But I got some pretty good shots, so you’ll probably be seeing plenty over the next few weeks.

This petite pup was all dressed up for CorgiCon, and ended up the belle of the ball. (Hovertext to the tune of this song, which I first saw in ‘The Mask’ but which is actually rather older. And very catchy. Be warned.)

A lot of the corgis were running around rather aimlessly, but this gal had her eye on the important stuff.

Look at that grace! That flair!

Sunday Switchup: Juju’s Pupcakes

Someone out there makes the most ridiculous tasty treats for dogs that I have ever seen.

Pupcakes! Puppy Cupcakes!

I would totally eat those if I weren’t on a diet. And, well, if they didn’t taste like liver.

Pupcakes! Puppy Cupcakes!

These are seriously making me crave sweets. Good for the dog, bad for the owner?

Caturday Supplement: Sleepy Park Tiger Tabby

Most cats are pretty territorial. But some cats actually do like going out and exploring new places. This one wandered around the park a bit (on quite a long leash) and sniffed at more or less everything before coming back and falling asleep against dad’s leg.

I wonder if you can train a cat to be like that if you take him out and play with him in lots of places as a kitten.

Pretty kitty. Very distinctive markings. I wonder if it’s some special breed?

Dog of the Day: Foofly Wiener

I haven’t mentioned it recently, so for the uninitiated: ‘foofly wiener’ is Autumn’s and my name for long-haired dachshunds and mini-dachshunds. This is a lovely example of the breed.

Going to see if I can do some editing and winnowing of CorgiCon pictures this weekend, and post them early next week.

Looks like a miniature golden retriever with no legs, right down to the grin.

Dog of the Day: Eros the Saint Bernard

It’s always a good day when I see one of these fine fellows hanging around the city. Eros is three and a half years old, and weighs a mighty 170 pounds. I would not want to be walking him when he decided he wanted to go a different direction than I did. But I don’t think he would, he seems like a very polite gentleman.

As you can see, I’m not the only one who is happy to see a Saint Bernard.

I think in the 2 minutes or so I was taking pictures, seven or eight people stopped to pet this dog.

Saint Bernard Smiling

Saint Bernards have the most ridiculous grins — and tongues — ever.

Well, they’ve also got an excessive supply of ‘happy’, so I guess the grin makes sense.

Dog of the Day: Seva the Korean Jindo

Seva (3 years old, and a rescue) was reeeeeally not happy to meet me. Apparently that is her typical attitude towards strangers, but I sometimes get lucky and hit it off with the shy ones. Not Seva. Her mom said, “If you knew her last year, you’d know that this is great progress. She’s relatively calm as long as you stay ten feet away, now.” Well then.

(Incidentally, does anyone else think that she looks an awful lot like a larger cousin of the doge?)

(Also incidentally, if I’ve taken pictures of your pup and haven’t posted them yet, drop a comment in one of my other posts and remind me!)

Korean Jindo Dog Being Very Very Submissive

Classic signaling… tail tucked as hard as she can, not looking directly at me but trying to keep me in vision. Ears are hard to tell from this angle but they’re held outward. She’s submitting as hard as she can, poor thing.

Dog of the Day: Golden Retriever/Cocker Spaniel Mix

A friendly sort. Just don’t get between him and his fruit.

Out in front of a fruit market. I didn’t get his name, but I think his dad said he liked carrots.
