Murphy! He (yes, ‘he’) was 11 weeks old in these pictures, and far too hyperactive and wiggly and happy to be real. (Just like every other labrador retriever puppy, none of whom are very credible either!)
Mom only got him to slow down for long enough not to be blurry by making him play ‘find the treat’.
Oh, they are going to have so much fun together.

I’ve run into a Spinone Italiano before, but she looked absolutely nothing like Giorgi. I’m not sure he is one (I have no notes) but I suspect so. I think the reason he looks so different is that he was shaved everywhere except, ah, two places. Which I believe will be immediately obvious to you once you see his pictures.

Giorgi was much more interested in saying hello than posing for the camera, but with a little help from his mom I got a few decent shots. Shame about the contrast.

When I first ran across these two pups they were tied to a parking meter and making threatening noises at all the dogs that went by. I walked into the restaurant and came back out again ten minutes later and they were seated comfortably at one of the outdoor tables, with mom, and… still making threatening noises at all the dogs that went by. Mom explained that they were recent arrivals to the city, and wondered if I knew any animal behavior and training experts in the Bay Area. Seems that they adore people, but are quite unhappy when there are other dogs around.
And I realized that no, I actually don’t know any. I’ve met two, but they have both since moved away. Anyone?
Lola is the blond. I am assured it’s entirely natural.
Looking at that face, it’s hard to believe that the two of them were ready to take on a 100-pound mixed breed that wandered by.
I’m just glad I didn’t smell too much like a dog that day!
Ran into this fine gentleman outside of a Whole Foods. Rhodesian ridgebacks are rather hefty dogs by nature, and can look a little intimidating, but this one was too obviously begging for affection even to scare a passing 5-year-old.
That’s quite an intent stare.
He really was shameless… he hit up everyone who walked by.
This Whole Foods is only a couple blocks from a pretty great dog park. If I were sure I could have gotten away with it, I would have snaffled him, played with him for half an hour, and then brought him back.
We haven’t had any ‘ork-orks’ (sea lions) for quite some time. So here are a couple of our fearless, flippered, furry friends. (And friends they are… I wanna go swimming with the sea lions like these guys did!)
They often end up in that funny pose on the right, which always reminds me of someone getting all defensive and huffy.
Autumn is cat-sitting E. V. at the moment. I haven’t gotten to meet her, alas, but I hear she’s “super-friendly”. I’m not sure I’ve ever actually met a Manx cat before, come to think of it.
Can anyone help me out and tell me what this lovely black-and-brown mahogany coloration is called? I don’t think it’s a standard tortoiseshell, or at least if it is then perhaps there’s another name for it too?

It appears that labradoodles aren’t the only super-cool dogs out there. If the labradoodle was The Dude, then are these two sunglasses-wearing pit bulls the Blues Brothers?
They were just hanging out on the corner of Market and Fourth, watching the people go by.
And occasionally taking an opportunistic lick.
Oh, man, I cannot even begin to tell you how charismatic Chewbacca is in person. And how confusing. He really looks like he ought to be his own breed, and I was desperately trying to figure him out — was he part Leonberger? Part Eurasier?
Dad told me his secret: he’s pretty much all the dogs. Specifically, he’s a three-month-old German shepherd/pit bull/Labrador retriever/St. Bernard mix. I do not believe that I could come up with a more amazing combination of dogs if you fully funded a five year research project. Heck, even if you substituted corgi for one of those breeds he would only be goofier, but only equally awesome.
He really wanted to play with me, too. But I was headed home, and so I only had time to take a few pictures and give him plenty of petting and belly rubs. Fortunately for me, his dad works right near where I do, and for him (lucky guy!) every day is ‘bring your dog to work day’, so there’s a pretty good chance that I (and you) will be able to see what Chewbacca looks like as he grows up.
Yes, that fur is fully as soft as it looks. And those ears are just as petable.
‘Golden Hour’ my butt. This was 6:30 PM in a nice little park and it was murder trying to get a shot with decent contrast.
He had this lovely golden glow to his fur.
I had a request for a boxer a couple of weeks back, and went through all my back catalog and discovered that I had posted every single boxer I’d ever taken pictures of. Well, I make no apologies… they’re pretty nifty dogs. So I went out to several dog parks and two San Francisco street fairs looking for boxers. And had no success. I finally had to report a failure.
Well, until last Friday, when I ran across Buster in one of my usual haunts, on my way to work one morning. So here, this one’s for you, Nate.
I find it so funny how some dogs, boxers in particular, often have black spotty skin, but not the fur over it.
Aww! (Incidentally, those ears aren’t cropped, they just lay back kind of funkily.)
I don’t think I post nearly enough golden retriever pictures. They’re super-common, true, but they’re gorgeous and they’re such wonderful dogs.
