Dog of the Day: Heterochromatic Collie

Just ran into this gorgeous collie recently, down in North Beach. Isn’t that eye amazing?

Tricolor Collie With Heterochromia (One Gorgeous Blue Eye)

The picture almost looks stretched out vertically. It’s not. Collies are just that pointy.

That eye was really attention-grabbing.

Mind you, so was the rest of her. (Or him. Didn’t check.)

In front of Caffe Trieste: nice place to hang out, for dogs and people. Especially in the gorgeous weather. (Sorry, east-coasters. Hope you get dug out soon!)

Dog of the Day: Barkley the 12-Week-Old Beagle Puppy

I walked out of work on Thursday just in time to see Barkley being escorted out of the bar downstairs by a bouncer. It seems he’d been causing a ruckus… probably by means of his overwhelming cute-itude.

Blue Tricolor Beagle Puppy

I have never met a ‘blue tricolor’ beagle before.

Blue Tricolor Beagle Puppy

Didn’t take him long to get the puppydog eyes down pat.

It must be awful having a 12-week-old puppy... having to take him everywhere you go... carry him around when he gets tired... simply dreadful.

Birderday Supplement: Red-Winged Blackbirds

I haven’t seen any of these fine beasties in the city before. And I’m pretty sure this flock wandered into the city quite recently, because they’re very skittish about people. Whenever I even got near their tree they fled.

More cats soon… Autumn got some kitty pictures for me, but I haven’t managed to get them from her yet.

Male Bi-Colored Red-Winged Blackbird (agelaius phoeniceus gubernator)

I never realized until recently that red-winged blackbirds are one of the most common birds in North America.

Male Bi-Colored Red-Winged Blackbird (agelaius phoeniceus gubernator)

Apparently these guys are a local-ish sub-species, the bi-colored red-winged blackbird (agelaius phoeniceus gubernator). The regular red-winged blackbird has a yellow stripe above the red, easily visible when they’re flying; these guys didn’t.

Dog of the Day: Falcor the Great Pyrenees

I guess this pup was one of the participants in Project Dog. A real celebrity in our midst!

Small Male Great Pyrenees

He looks quite serious, doesn’t he?

Dog of the Day: Whippet Good!

Meet Febbo, a 9-year-old male whippet. Believe it or not, he’s our first! How on earth did that happen?

Tan and White Whippet

None of my side views of this fine pooch turned out. Too bad, since whippets are so graceful-looking.

Tan and White Whippet

The ‘confused puppy head tilt’. I get a lot of these when I use the squeaky toy hidden in my backpack.

Tan and White Whippet

I think he might’ve been more interested in the dog treats in my backpack, though.

Dog of the Day: Zoe the Tiny Labradoodle

Okay, Zoe’s not tiny-tiny… I mean, she’s not chihuahua-sized. But she’s a full-grown (1-year-old) Labrador retriever/poodle mix that weighs 14 pounds. That’s a whole lot of awesome to pack into such a petite form.

Cream Labrador Retriever/Miniature Poodle Mix (Labradoodle)

She looks pretty determined, doesn’t she?

Those ears look fun to play with.

Dog of the Day: Pixie the Norwegian Fruit-Bat Terrier

Pixie is quite a rare breed! In fact, she may well be the only Norwegian fruit-bat terrier outside of Norwegia. I had been previously unaware of this breed, until her mom told me about them, but I immediately made up researched a bunch of details. For example, did you know that they were originally bred for war, and were used in the Battle of Hastings by Norwegian mercenaries, who were hired to fight against the fearsome Norman ‘batzenjammers’, who rode into battle on the backs of giant mutant fruit bats?

Whoever cropped her ears should have his ears cropped in return. It’s only fair, right?

Edit: Well, I’m not sure why significant numbers of people search for ‘Norwegian fruit-bat dog’ on google, but welcome regardless.

Brindle-and-White Norwegian Fruit Bat Terrier (Or Possibly American Pit Bull Terrier Mix)

Obviously the ears have to be cropped to keep the fruit bats from grabbing onto them, right?

Perhaps the curly tail enables the dog to trap smaller fruit-bats as they fly through?

And the intense cuteness attracts bats. And also dog blog photographers.

Dog of the Day: Namo the Cardigan Welsh Corgi

Namo is apparently often found in Kiehl’s, a cosmetics-and-stuff store on Fillmore Street. His name is apparently part of a Buddhist prayer (‘Namo Buddhaya’, or ‘salutation to the Buddha’, if I’m reading this right.) I don’t know, corgis never struck me as the most serene of animals, although Cardigans are definitely closer to that than Pembrokes are.

Tricolor Cardigan Welsh Corgi

Whatever he’s named for, he sure makes a good store ambassador. He led about five people into the store. Including me.

They had treats waiting for him behind the counter. Frequent visitor indeed!

Dog of the Day: Charlie Brown the Labrador Retriever/Weimaraner/Pit Bull/Hound

I’ve been holding onto Charlie (girl) for around six months now. Why? Because I just had too many good pictures of her. I just couldn’t choose, say, ten. But today I’m watching the Puppy Bowl, and so I have plenty of time for weighty cuteness-related decisions.

Brown and White Six-Month-Old Labrador Retriever/Weimaraner/American Pit Bull Terrier/Hound Mix

This pup is an expert wiggler.

Look at that happy face.

Brown and White Six-Month-Old Labrador Retriever/Weimaraner/American Pit Bull Terrier/Hound Mix

See what I mean? Look at that dog. How could I choose just a few pictures?

Brown and White Six-Month-Old Labrador Retriever/Weimaraner/American Pit Bull Terrier/Hound Mix

Mom had just recently adopted Charlie recently, but they were already getting along great.

Brown and White Six-Month-Old Labrador Retriever/Weimaraner/American Pit Bull Terrier/Hound Mix

Now that’s a big yawn. Nice teeth too!

Brown and White Six-Month-Old Labrador Retriever/Weimaraner/American Pit Bull Terrier/Hound Mix

Charlie was stuck between ‘I want to play!’ and ‘I want belly rubs!’

Brown and White Six-Month-Old Labrador Retriever/Weimaraner/American Pit Bull Terrier/Hound Mix

It’s a dilemma I wouldn’t mind more of myself!

My god, this dog ought to be in the movies. Or advertising something.

Brown and White Six-Month-Old Labrador Retriever/Weimaraner/American Pit Bull Terrier/Hound Mix

Look at that belly. The belly!

Like I said… expert wiggler.

Dog of the Day: Lucy the Great Dane Puppy

My notes seem to be off… they say I ran into Lucy two days later than I took these pictures, but I can’t see anyone else who could be a 6-month-old Great Dane than this sweetie here, and I sure don’t see any other names that could be her, either. So I hereby decree this to be Lucy!

(Sorry, no cats today. Autumn brought some back from her trip, though, so expect more soon!)

Black and Tan 6-month-old Great Dane Puppy

The perfectly-sized pony for someone, say, three years old.

Black and Tan 6-month-old Great Dane Puppy

Great Danes look tremendously goofier with their ears un-clipped. (Say no to ear clipping! Say yes to more goofy dogs! Everyone wins!)

Haven’t had a nose shot for some time.
