Dog of the Day: Brown Poodle with Cone of Shaaaaame (and Westie Friend)

Oh god, this was silly. See, the brown poodle was wandering around with this big long dog toy. Most of the time he had it in his mouth but he actually put it down, into the collar, once while I watched. And then, disaster: he dropped it! And promptly started trying to pick it up.

Most of my pictures of him doing that are all blurry, because I was laughing so hard at the poor thing.

He kept mooshing his face into the cone of shame. And his mom was standing right there. I said something like, “Hey, I think your dog might need a little help there…” And she said, “Naw, he’ll be fine!” Turned out she knew what she was talking about. A second later he’d managed to scoop it up and was happily shaking it around.

West Highland White Terrier and Brown Miniature Poodle

Every blurry photo I took also had the poodle's tongue lolling out. Maybe cones of shame taste like ice cream cones?

Brown Poodle and White Poodle

Just at the crucial second where he picked up his toy, another poodle steps right in my way. Ah well.

Brown Miniature Poodle and West Highland White Terrier

That is an absolutely ridiculous toy to begin with. Combining it with the cone of shame? Genius!

Dog of the Day: Little Man & Me!

I did a big project last night, so it’s just going to be a light post for you today. I found a couple more pictures of Little Man… or, more specifically, pictures Autumn took of me cuddling Little Man.

Also, someone (ahem) posted a eulogy for Toola, the sea otter who taught the Monterey Bay Aquarium how to raise sea otters, on Daily Kos last night. Check it out here.

Finally, thanks to those of you who have already bought t-shirts! Please let me know how yours comes out: I am very curious about how consistent Skreened’s quality is. And for those of you who don’t like the current designs, don’t worry: there will be more to choose from soon.

What? He was all itchy under those straps.

I love how the only blurry thing in the picture is my petting hand.

Dog of the Day: Kayleigh the Olde English Bulldogge

Aww, she’s not THAT old! She’s just naturally droopy. (But not nearly as droopy as ‘regular’ bulldogs.) Kayleigh seems like a real sweetheart, and I’m proud to claim her as the first Olde English Bulldogge we’ve seen here at DoSF.

Olde English Bulldogge

Face looks more like a mastiff than a bulldog.

Olde English Bulldogge

She seems like a relaxed, well-adjusted, calm sort of pup.

Anyone else reminded of 'Droopy Dawg'?

Double Dog Day: Isatas the Shepherd/Husky (?) and Ddol Ddol the Shih-Tzu

Okay, first the names: Isatas (pronounced eez-taz) means ‘snow’ in, I think, Inuit. Ddol Ddol means something in Korean but I don’t appear to have written down what it was.

And here’s something surprising about them: in the ratings of canine intelligence, German shepherd is rated as the third most intelligent breed, and huskies are right in the middle of the pack. Shih-tzus are rated 70th… out of 79 breeds. And yet, at least according to mom, Ddol Ddol is the clear brains of this operation, and Isatas is a little… slow. Loving, cuddly, adorable, and very eager to please, but… not the brightest candle in the wind, if you catch my draft. Uh, drift.

Siberian Husky/German Shepherd Mix and Shih-Tzu

They make a surprisingly harmonious pair, really.

I don't have much evidence to go on as far as smarts are concerned, but Ddol Ddol is definitely friendly and inquisitive.

Siberian Husky/German Shepherd Mix and Shih-Tzu

Awww, Isatas has nose freckles!

Siberian Husky/German Shepherd Mix and Shih-Tzu

The 'dubious dog' expression always adds about ten apparent IQ points for me.

Group shot, with mom! They look like they make a great team.

Dog of the Day: Tammy Fae the Champion Cardigan Welsh Corgi

I ran into Tammy Fae on the way to work, the day before my birthday, and I had to consider it an early birthday present. She’s so cute! And such a happy pup. Cardigans are supposed to be a lot less hyper and goofy than Pembroke Welsh corgis, but Tammy Fae has got all the energy and goofiness of a Pembroke, plus that gorgeous blue merle coloration and the poofly tail, too. Awesome.

Her dad is actually a breeder of Cardigans, and Tammy Fae has won best of breed at at least one show, though I didn’t ask which. His web site is aldergate.com and he’s apparently working on a photobook of his dogs in San Francisco, called ‘Blue Dogs in the City’. I think it’s awesome that someone else is working on a photo-project of dogs in San Francisco… and especially for a breed as wonderful as corgis!

Blue Merle Cardigan Welsh Corgi With Partial Heterochromia

One look at that goofy face and you can tell just what kind of dog she is. (Well, the long squat body helps too!)

Blue Merle Cardigan Welsh Corgi With Partial Heterochromia

From this picture, it looks like she has blue eyes.

Blue Merle Cardigan Welsh Corgi With Partial Heterochromia

Wink! (And here it looks like maybe she has one blue eye and one brown one.)

Blue Merle Cardigan Welsh Corgi With Partial Heterochromia

Here you can see what it really is... just about a third of her left eye is blue. Corresponding to the proportion of her that fur that is white, more or less.

Blue Merle Cardigan Welsh Corgi With Partial Heterochromia

Sudden plaintive look. It's worth noting that of the fifty or so pictures I took, she looks plaintive in exactly one of them. And that they were taken at a rate of three per second.

Blue Merle Cardigan Welsh Corgi With Partial Heterochromia

On the other hand, about 20 of them have her doing something goofy with her tongue... but no two in a row. That's a fast tongue!

Blue Merle Cardigan Welsh Corgi With Partial Heterochromia

An even better look at that gorgeous eye.

Blue Merle Cardigan Welsh Corgi With Partial Heterochromia

Okay, that's officially ridiculous.

Site News: Tee Shirts Now Available

I get a surprising amount of traffic on Dogs of SF: I have at least a few hundred regular (between daily and weekly) followers, and I also get a surprising amount of traffic off of Google web searches for people looking for pictures of given breeds and breed mixes. (Unique visitors per day are generally between 100 and 200, and sometimes spike as high as 1500 or so.) It’s quite gratifying… I guess I wouldn’t be surprising anyone by saying that I enjoy (and therefore greatly appreciate) the attention.

But, well, I’m paying for the hosting, and I’m spending a lot of time and energy on the blog. I enjoy it, so this isn’t much of an issue, but I’ve been thinking lately of ways I might be able to make it pay for itself, or even make me a little money, while at the same time not being obnoxious to my audience.

Basically, what I wanted to do is find a way to make a little money, while adding value to the site for my regulars rather than annoying them. This meant that the normal way to monetize a web site (google ads, or a similar ad service) was totally out of the question. So I hit upon the idea of commissioning some Dogs of SF t-shirt designs from friends of mine. (I have a lot of friends who are excellent professional or semi-professional artists.)

I have set up a store on ‘Skreened’, an online t-shirt (and other apparel) company who bills themselves as the ethical and socially responsible alternative to Cafe Press. Over the next few months, as the designs I have commissioned trickle in, I will be adding them to the store. To start us off, though, I have two designs: first, a t-shirt and a tote bag based on the Dogs of SF logo, created by Patricia Ross:

Dogs of SF Logo Tee

Dogs of San Francisco Logo Tee

And second, an iPod parody ‘iPoodle’ tee, made by yours truly from pictures of Fozzie the poodle. The shirt comes in two versions: the one on a black tee  or the one for light-colored shirts:

Dancing iPoodle Tee

Dogs of San Francisco Dancing iPoodle Tee

I’ll probably making some more products and offering them for sale, possibly including other things besides apparel . If anyone has any suggestions for things they’d like to see me offer my designs on, from Skreened or RedBubble (which makes things like stickers, note cards, art prints, etc), please let me know. And if anyone has an idea for a design, let me know what the idea is, too, and if I like it and am able to make the design, I will probably* send you a free item of your choice (t-shirt, tote bag, set of stickers, whatever) with that design on it.. If you go so far as to make your own design, and I like it enough to offer it, then we can talk about other terms.

(* Probably: this is not a contract. I don’t want to promise to send someone a copy of a design they suggest, because there’s a chance that five people will end up suggesting the same thing and then get annoyed when  don’t deliver, or someone will suggest a design I am already working on, or something like that. I don’t want this to end up costing me money rather than making money.)

Expect more designs, both by me and by actual artists with real talent, in the next few months. If I actually start selling a decent amount of this stuff, I might even consider doing a run of the more popular shirts myself, so I can offer them less expensively than Skreened does.

I am also considering printing up some 2013 calendars, and possibly bumper stickers or other stuff like that, and seeing if I can get some local stores interested. And finally, I am thinking about offering stretched canvas prints of the photos, either for the dog’s owner or for people who just like a given picture. These would be printed by a local Bay Area print shop (in the case of the calendars etc) or by a local San Francisco specialist in art printing that I’ve worked with before (for the stretched canvas prints.)

Comments? Thoughts? Concerns?

Crustacean-Day Supplement: Dancing Crayfish

Full disclosure: my dad was a marine biologist who worked on lobsters, so I have a soft spot in my heart for the little hard-shelled guys with claws. When I saw the little shop just off Polk Street that had this little guy as a mascot, I just had to take a few pictures.

Pet Crayfish

Full-sized lobsters are kind of scary, actually. This guy? He's little enough to be cute.

Pet Crayfish

He was hidden in his little cave when I started taking my pictures, I could only see his eyes, but as soon as I started taking them he popped right out.

Pet Crayfish

I wonder if he's hand-trained? I wonder if you CAN hand-train a crayfish?

Dog of the Day: Rescued Taiwan Street Dog

Autumn and I ran into a few dogs when we were out hiking last Sunday in an area known as ‘Little Yosemite’ (the day after my birthday!) One was a gorgeous border collie, one was another cute mix, but the most striking of them all was this one, who was rescued from the streets of Taiwan.

It’s a shame I forgot to record this guy’s name, because it means mom and dad will be less likely to run across the pictures, which came out gorgeously, of a gorgeous dog!

The funny thing is, I saw the pup and took some pictures, and he ran up to me and sniffed at me and let me pet him. Then he took off and wandered around some, with me taking pictures, and then walked by me, not pausing this time to let me pet him. And the mom and dad said, “Oh, he’s really skittish, he won’t let you pet him, oh, look, he’s being all friendly to her!” as the pup walked right up to Autumn. And I thought, ‘you just watched him walk right up to me like 2 minutes ago. Did you just forget about that instantly after it happened?’ Kind of funny.

Adopted Taiwanese Street Dog

I am an absolute sucker for that coloration. I don't even know what it's called, besides 'mottled'

Adopted Taiwanese Street Dog

The head-tilt happy-face also gets me every time.

Adopted Taiwanese Street Dog

That's the proud mom and dad, of course.

Adopted Taiwanese Street Dog

Immediately after this picture is where I paused to pet the dog. Hence the significant change of background thereafter.

Adopted Taiwanese Street Dog

Quite unlike my usual pictures' backgrounds of random cars, brick walls, and the legs of passing people.

Adopted Taiwanese Street Dog

Caught him mid-leap.

Adopted Taiwanese Street Dog

Man, if all Taiwanese street dogs looked this pretty, people would be lining up to take one home.

Dog of the Day: Black… Spitz-y… Thing!

I have no idea what he is. I also have no idea how something so gorgeous sat around in my ‘to be posted’ folder for nearly an entire year. He could be some kind of border collie mix, but he looks so spitz-like. He looks to me like a German Spitz, only with much shorter fur. Anyone? Anyone?

Black Dog

The white neck-ruff is awesome too.

Roll of 28(+1) Day 28+1: The Babe Ridge

Three blocks from my apartment. Kinda pretty at night, although the Oakland lights do spoil the effect somewhat. If Oakland ever has a major power outage (and the Bay Bridge doesn’t) I will totally be out there taking pictures.
