Roll of 28(+1) Day 28+1: The Babe Ridge

Three blocks from my apartment. Kinda pretty at night, although the Oakland lights do spoil the effect somewhat. If Oakland ever has a major power outage (and the Bay Bridge doesn’t) I will totally be out there taking pictures.

This is the view from one of the lesser peaks of Russian Hill, near Jones and Vallejo.

Dog of the Day: George the Foooooofly Wiener

A very distinctive miniature dachshund today. I wish my pictures had turned out better, because it’s really hard to see what makes him so unusual: he has the typical marks of a black-with-tan-points dachshund, but he’s red instead of black! I initially thought that this would make him recessive-red (remember Melvin?) but I have also found references to dominant-red (chestnut?) dachshunds with tan points.

(And Melvin, who could have been expected to have tan points, didn’t… they were the same shade as the recessive-red background, which leads me to suspect that the ‘points’ are basically the same thing as the recessive red, fur that is lacking the normal black melanin that would ordinarily hide the red, but only showing up in a few places instead of all over. But given that the genetic explanations are mostly either way over my head or way too simplified to be of use, I am having a bit of trouble figuring this stuff out!)

Red Long-Haired Dachshund with Tan Points

Whatever else he is, George certainly is foofly.

Red Long-Haired Dachshund with Tan Points

Certainly is an unusual coloration, whatever its origin.

Roll of 28(+1) Day 28: Window With Reflection

The building next to the one I work in. The reflection is part of AT&T park, across the street.

Brick Building Window

It's a little nerve-wracking working in a block entirely full of brick buildings... in an earthquake zone.

Double Dog Day: Lucky and Chase, the Border Collie Mixes (No Relation)

These two are good friends, but not relatives. In fact, Chase is the product of an overseas adoption (from Korea), and is still a bit skittish. Ironically, this meant that I got better pictures of him, because he was apt to stand off a bit and eye me warily, while Lucky just wanted to lick my hand. And smell the camera. And stick his nose in my pockets in search of treats.

Two Border Collie Mixes

Lucky... Lab mix, maybe? Chase could be an Aussie mix, or maybe even... Sheltie?

Border Collie Mix

I like the "Action Dog" pose.

Looking over at dad to make sure that it was safe to sniff me.

Speckles!

Dog of the Day: Pug Mix

I snatched a few pictures of this guy on my way somewhere. I was having some serious camera trouble, and I didn’t think anything I got was worth posting, so I didn’t even bother to ask the pup’s name and breed, although I did give him a good belly rub. And then the four pictures I took ALL turned out adorable. Oh well, there are worse ways to be surprised, I guess.

Pug Mix

He's definitely got the 'concerned pug' forehead wrinkle thing going.

Pug Mix

Aww. Teensy tongue. Plus you can see that he has a real muzzle. If I had to guess, I'd say Chihuahua/pug mix, but a lot cuter than most Chihuahua/pugs I've met.

Pug Mix

Oh good lord. Penalty ten yards for excessive cuteness.

Pug Mix

He's also got the pug attitude. "Hi up there! Why aren't you down here petting me?"

Roll of 28(+1) Day 26: Little Yosemite

Autumn and I took a trip out east of San Francisco, and did a little hiking. This is a valley known as ‘Little Yosemite’. Gorgeous.

Little Yosemite

Got some pretty pictures of the waterfalls too, but next time I really need to go back with a neutral density filter.

Dog of the Day: Mu’addib the Pack Puppy

It must be puppy season, since Autumn and I have seen more in the last two weeks than we have for the previous month or so. This little border collie mix puppy even packs his own treats (and poop bags) around with him.

Border Collie Puppy with Pack

If you ever see a dog carrying one of these, scratch under the pack. Apparently it can get pretty itchy.

Border Collie Puppy with Pack

I am increasingly worried for landlords that don't allow pets. How could you look into those eyes and still not allow pets in your building? The only thing I can think is, they mislaid their souls somewhere.

Border Collie Puppy with Pack

Wonder how much a puppy like this can comfortably carry.

Border Collie Puppy with Pack

...border collie/beagle mix, maybe?

Roll of 28(+1) Day 25: Birthday Pinnipeds!

For my birthday, Autumn and I went up to the Marine Mammal Center, in the Marin headlands, just north of SF. They were pretty empty, January and February being their slow season, but there were still five occupants, three of whom were on display.

Sadly, photos through wire fences don’t really do them justice. They’re astoundingly cute, especially given how… er… non-photogenic the males end up being when they’re adults.

Baby Elephant Seals

God, those eyes. These guys are so cute. (The green is just dye, an identifying mark.)

Caturday Supplement: YAMWK!

(That’s ‘Yet Another Macy’s Window Kitty!)

Kitty in a Window

I tended to get to the windows after dark, when all the kitties were tuckered out. This one was the exception.

Kitty in a Window

That looks like a map of an archipelago. Perhaps this is a treasure map kitty!

Kitty in a Window

Someone isn't getting enough cuddles. Poor kitty. Hope she got adopted.

Site News: Damn Facebook Anyway

So I did some stuff to integrate with Facebook. It’s been helpful, by and large. Gets a few more people here.

And now it’s killing the site. If you’re having trouble connecting, that’s why: part of Facebook’s API is responding so slowly that it’s causing page loads to time out. It’s clearly been doing this for a couple hours now (and the problem is very visible on their API responsiveness graph) but they haven’t even acknowledged the problem yet, let alone fixed it. Damn am I glad that I don’t depend upon Facebook for my actual livelihood.
