Dog of the Day: Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Secret: Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are just Bernese Mountain Dogs who visit the barber regularly.

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Warning: ear floppage detected.

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Hand-tooled leather dog collar with silver fittings. Yup, this dude is stylin'.

Dog of the Day: St. Patrick’s Day Corgi/Golden Retriever Mix

A few pictures I took back on St. Paddy’s Day, of a gorgeous ginger dog. And a corgi (don’t know what kind)/golden retriever mix… two of Autumn’s (and my) favorites.

(The pictures were accidentally taken at low resolution, so there are no higher-resolution versions to go to if you click on them. Sorry about that.)

Golden Retriever/Corgi Mix

Final verification of my theory that neckerchiefs/bandanas on dogs are the only pieces of clothing that make a dog MORE awesome.

Corgi/Golden Retriever Mix

Bonus: this dog appeared to quite like Irish music.

Golden Retriever/Corgi Mix

Don't know whether it was half Pembroke or Cardigan. Big floofy tail, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Dog of the Day: Pug

Slightly late post. Busy day.

Sad pug.

Pug

I think part of the reason this pug looks sad is that the grocery store he's tied up outside of has sooo many delicious smells...

Dog of the Day: Rocco the Rococo the Pharaoh Hound/Pit Mix

I have a soft spot for gangly, awkward dogs with ridiculous ears. Okay, okay, I have a soft spot for most dogs, but you gotta admit, this guy is really something.

Pharaoh Hound/American Pit Bull Terrier Mix

Rocco loves carrots. In this picture, he is being amazingly obedient. Because I have a carrot.

Pharaoh Hound/American Pit Bull Terrier Mix

This is after he ate a carrot. You can almost see the thought bubble: Where there's one carrot, there may be two!

Pharaoh Hound/American Pit Bull Terrier Mix

And this is him when he discovered that I was all out of carrots. Aww... poor pup!

Dog of the Day: Caylee the English Shepherd

Neither Autumn nor I had ever heard of an English Shepherd before, but we totally fell for this gal as soon as we saw her. Apparently English Shepherds were actually bred in the United States, and are of the same lineage as collies. And they’re super-smart and hardworking and loyal and trustworthy and brave and thrifty and… oh, no, wait, that’s boy scouts. Well, many of those things, anyway.

They also make great silhouettes.

English Shepherd

Caylee is absolutely gorgeous. I can't believe there aren't more English Shepherds around.

English Shepherd

Cute as a button! I love the 'V' shape on the forehead.

English Collie

Such a happy smile. Almost think these pups are related to golden retrievers.

English Shepherd

Her tail looks kind of like my eyebrows: big and fluffy, and a different color on the top than the bottom.

English Shepherd

And here she demonstrates that in addition to being a poised, ladylike pup, she is also quite capable of being a goofball.

Triple Dog Day: The Fearsome Threesome

I know I took down notes about these three, I know I did. But I can’t find any. I remember that one was a corgi mix, and one was had some papillon in him. And the third is either a Chihuahua or a Chihuahua mix. Anyway, they sure do make a cute trio.

Corgi Mix, Papillon Mix, and Chihuahua Mix

If I could figure out how I got them all to look in the same direction at the same time, without food, I'd bottle it and sell it to family portrait photographers.

Corgi Mix, Papillon Mix, and Chihuahua Mix

I should've gotten these guys in the shade. The one in the back is so white in the sun that I didn't catch any detail at all.

Corgi Mix, Papillon Mix, and Chihuahua Mix

The guy in the back has deployed his ears, and they are fully as ridiculous as befits a papillon mix.

Dog of the Day: Boxer

Just a morning’s boxer in Huntingdon Park. It’s a great place to see dogs at all hours, although a bit more so in the afternoon and evening. Some mornings when I go through at 8 or 8:30 there isn’t a single dog there at all. Terrible!

Boxer

Those stub tails always crack me up. Boxers should have 'Not to be used as a handle' and 'Do not attempt to lift by tail' printed on their backsides. (If you look close you can see a basset in the background.)

Boxer

Boxers can get up a damn good head of steam, but they don't corner so well.

Boxer

Pretty nice action shot if I do say so myself.

Boxer

Plus one point for ridiculous ear floppage.

Dog of the Day: Boston Terrier

A young adult Boston terrier for your elucidation and edification, and a small fee. (Well, okay, for you, he’s free.)

Boston Terrier

He really didn't quite seem to know what to do with me....

Boston Terrier

...he didn't know whether to chase me off, with a great deal of sound and fury...

Boston Terrier

...or play with me. Goofy pup.

Dog of the Day: Trout the Pit Bull/Lab/Heeler Mix

As promised, here are some more pictures of Trout the adorable hyper nutball dog that Autumn dogsat a couple of weeks ago. He’s such a goofball, but when he comes over and rests his head on your knee and looks up at you and says ‘throw my ball pleeeeease!’ you can’t help but forgive him. Even if he did just drool all over your work pants.

Also, starting now, I’m going to be posting new dogs at noon rather than at midnight. No point in connecting to facebook if the posts happen when nobody’s awake to notice them.

Pit Bull Mix

This is Trout teasing Autumn. He loves chasing the ball but doesn't love putting it down again. Silly dawg.

American Pit Bull Terrier/Labrador Retriever/Australian Cattle Dog Mix

And here he is walking away from Autumn. Yep, the ball is still in his mouth.

American Pit Bull Terrier/Labrador Retriever/Australian Cattle Dog Mix

You put your right paw in, you take your right paw out...

American Pit Bull Terrier/Labrador Retriever/Australian Cattle Dog Mix

From a standing start to a gallop in 0.3 seconds. That's a lot of horsepower.

American Pit Bull Terrier/Labrador Retriever/Australian Cattle Dog Mix

You can tell how happy he is to have the ball. He's GOT to have some ACD in him.

Dog of the Day: Beagle Mix

Mom said this was a Beagle/Bassett or a Beagle/Bloodhound, I forget which, and I am not currently feeling qualified to judge.

Beagle Mix

You can see that he is terribly vicious. Mom had to hold tight to his leash to keep him from licking me to death.

Beagle Mix

He did know how to sit, and did it as soon as mom said to, every time! (So what if he only stayed 'sat' for 3 seconds per command?)

Beagle Mix

I love the goofy ones.
