Triple Dog Day: Meeting of the Minds

If you think this picture doesn’t look much like Chicago, Milwaukee, OR St. Louis, you’re right… this is from my trip back in July. I plead exhaustion: it’s the day after I returned from my trip, I have a September 1 deadline for two major projects I’m working on, and I got home at 7:45 and it’s laundry day.* So you get a greeting on the beach today.

* (Okay, okay, I will own up to one thing. We all have our little luxuries. I don’t have cable, or any kind of limited-access TV. I only have an expensive cell plan because my company requires me to be on call 24/7 (which UGH UGH UGH). But one luxury I do pay for is to have someone pick up my laundry in front of my door on Thursday at 7 AM and return it, washed, pressed, and neatly packaged, by 3 or 4 PM on Friday. I’m sure doing laundry in a laundromat is good for the soul or something, but if so then my soul is just going to have to suffer for a bit. NOT trucking my laundry up and down a 25-degree-angle hill and NOT sitting there for two hours while it washes and dries is well worth the $80 or so a month I pay for the privilege.)

Three Dogs And Two Humans Greet One Another On A Beach

Wish I’d gotten a picture… I saw this golden earlier, laying against a tree the exact color that he was. I honestly thought he was a dog-shaped piece of log. And then he got up and ran over here to make some new friends.

Dog of the Day: Ears!

Howdy from Amtrak! I’m training from St. Louis up to Chicago today, and am procrastinating from work (which is how I’ll be spending most of the train ride) by posting a picture.

I met this pup on the light rail in Chicago on Sunday. I didn’t get her name or breed, so I have decided to name her ‘Ears’.

Small Grey Dog With Huge Fluffy Ears

She doesn’t like it much if you play with them. But it’s so hard to resist.

Dog of the Day: Mushu the German Shepherd

There ARE dogs in Milwaukee! I ran into a couple just a block from where I’m staying. I got dozens of good pictures of Mushu (6 months old and named after the character from Mulan) but I am so busy being on vacation that I only have time to share one tonight. More soon!

Mushu was apparently recovering from an illness. He seemed in fine fettle to me, although he did get stuck in a silly position for a while.

Dog of the Day: Eebee (Isabel) the Basset Hound

I put in about four miles of walking today, and for a while I thought I was going to run into not a single, solitary pup. Finally, though, and fortunately before it got dark, I did run into Eebee, who gave me puppydog eyes and nosesmooches, so it was all good.

I also ran into some bunnies, but that was after dark, alas.

Dog of the Day: Pungsan Dog

A new breed for us! I took these pictures on my trip northward for July 4th, and just remembered they were on my DSLR memory card yesterday while I was packing for another trip.* Apparently this pup is a Pungsan dog, a breed you don’t exactly see a lot of outside of Korea. (Actually, you don’t see a lot of them inside Korea, and you see nearly none outside.) I was privileged to meet one, let alone one this friendly.

* I’m on a trip! I’m in Milwaukee for Milwaukee Irish Festival, a celebration of Irish music and Irish dance and Irish setters and other Irishness. Then I’m going to head down to St. Louis by Amtrak on Sunday, and then to Washington, MO (corncob pipe capital of the world!) on Monday for the eclipse. Then back to St. Louis for the night, and then back to Chicago by Amtrak on Tuesday, followed by my flight back to San Francisco also on Tuesday. Exhausting! But out of my top ten favorite bands, about seventeen will be playing, plus I will get to take pictures of the eclipse with an amazingly nifty and weird new lens that I got. I will share any that come out good and probably many that don’t, as is my usual approach.

Happy-Looking Pungsan Dog

See? I told you: friendly face. And what a gorgeous breed.

If you look in the background at that log you can sort of see that someone has piled stacks of stones onto it. Kind of neat.

Dog of the Day: Orson the Newfoundland Dog

If last Friday wasn’t enough Newfie for you, how’s about Orson? Named of course after that famous theatrical personality, Orson from Mork & Mindy.

I kid, I kid. He is, of course, named after the similarly solemn and noble Orson Welles.

You just to hug him, don’t you? Admit it. You do. Drool or no drool.

Well, eat your heart out, because I got to! 😀

Pack-Bear of the Day: Brown Newfoundland Dog

I wonder what they would have thought in the Old West if they’d seen this fella tied up to a hitchin’ post outside of a sa-loon.

Well, they do say that dogs are originally descended from ‘pack animals’.

Dog of the Day: Deflated Labrador Retriever

Nanananananananana… BART DOG!

Yellow Labrador Retriever Looks Out The Open Doors Of BART Train

This pup stood up every time the doors opened in the hope someone would come in and pet him.

And this is what happened if nobody did.

Dog of the Day: German Shepherd

Poor pup. Abandoned alone outside of a store for (at the time I took this picture) almost a whole minute. The pathos!

German Shepherd Sitting In Front Of Trash Bins

The green bin is compost, usually mostly food scraps. No wonder he looks so sad… all those delicious smells, but the lid is closed and locked!

Dog of the Day: Payton the Australian Shepherd

I hear Payton (boy, 9 years old) has some obscure sports figure named after him.

Why the goggles, you ask? Funny thing: it seems that Payton has a skin disease that is turning all the fur on his head white. It didn’t use to be at all. Many dogs piebald dogs, and also many of those who are born entirely white or with entirely white heads, have vision problems or (sometimes) are entirely blind, and it seems that Payton is developing some of those vision problems himself, even though he only started gradually getting the white fur over the last few years. I’d never heard of this before, but I saw before-and-after pictures and they’re very dramatic. Weird!

Happily, it seems that he’s able to see in normal light okay, and that the googles help a lot, out in direct sunlight. He didn’t seem to have any trouble seeing me.

Australian Shepherd In Ski Goggles

It wasn’t hard to get Payton to look at me. It was hard to keep Payton looking at me, when mom and dad had bacon on their plates.
