Dog of the Day: Sleepy Little Mutt

I’ve posted a couple of Macy’s window kittens recently, so I think it might be time for a Macy’s window puppy. This sleepy little mutt did not do anything exciting either of the two times I walked by while he was in there, but he won my heart nonetheless.

Dog of the Day: Goldendoodle

This goldendoodle got a little impatient and decided to take herself out for a walk. Don’t worry, though… she was on-leash at all times.

There really needs to be a separate blog for ‘dogs who take themselves for walks’. But only ones who hold their own leashes.

Double Dog Day: Dubious Dachshund and Small White Fluffy Dog

I’m not sure what the floofy one is, but that’s one dubious dachshund in the foreground there. I’m thinking he didn’t want his picture taken. Sorry, pup!

I have no idea what I did to attract his attention.

Sunday Switchup: A Modest Marriage Proposal

So, yesterday I said I’d have a story for you, and here it is. On January 7th, someone contacted me on a web site I discovered recently called ‘TimeRepublik‘. It’s a way of basically trading your hours for other people’s: you can advertise your skills on there, say you’re an expert tomato wrangler, and someone says ‘hey, I need a tomato wrangler for an hour tomorrow’, and they trade you one ‘hour’ for an hour of your tomato wrangling. And next week you need a computer programmer, or an apartment cleaner, or whatever, so you trade that hour in for one. Everyone’s time is worth the same, which I really like, and…

I seem to have gotten a bit sidetracked. So! Leonardo, a stranger to me from Brazil, contacts me through the site and says, “Hey, I see that you are a photographer. I need one in San Francisco, because I’ll be visiting and want to propose to my girlfriend there, and I’d like someone to take pictures’. Well, that turned out to be a bit of an oversimplification: what he actually wanted was to surprise her with the following:

A Modest Marriage Proposal

Note that in this picture she has absolutely no idea that anything’s going on, including the big banner behind her.

This involved recruiting a couple of volunteers for the banner, and another (Autumn) to hold a second camera, and then the time changed and we lost our volunteers and ended up having to recruit two random joggers to hold the banner. I wish I’d gotten their names so I could thank them properly on here.

In the end, everything went well: she was completely surprised, and very, very happy, and I got a few nice pictures which he then proceeded to do a great job editing and setting up. I’ll share a link to them when I figure out exactly where he put them. In the mean time, the above was one that I got on my camera.

The day was pretty grey, but the mood was anything but. And what a nice thing to get to be a part of.

Caturday Supplement: Macy’s Marmies

These two gorgeous marmies were snoozing in the window of Macy’s when I walked up, and I immediately melted into a puddle. Supposedly they were even cuter when they were playing together, but I must admit I find that somewhat hard to imagine. I hope they were adopted together, although I guess I should be satisified with just knowing they were both adopted.

It has been an interesting day, though in a good way. I will post about it tomorrow. Right now I am so tired that I am in danger of emulating these kitties, except on my floor.

Dog of the Day: Katara the Tosa Inu

It’s been quite a while since we’ve had a new breed, but Katara (1 year old) is new to us: a tosa inu, also known as a Japanese mastiff. She has her own instagram page (rescuedogkatara), and also her own story: she was rescued from a dog-meat farm in Korea and shipped off to an idyllic existence in San Francisco. All dogs should be so lucky!

Hard for me to believe, but this breed is banned in quite a few countries, including the UK and New Zealand, and is also banned from the properties of the Dublin City Council in Ireland. Just shows what they know.

I have actually found a few more new breeds to post, but, as so often happens, all the pictures of them came out blurry. In particular I was hoping to post my first hovawart, because man those are gorgeous dogs. Hope I run into him again soon!

Yes, that is drool. Yes, looped over her muzzle. She was drooling and then shook herself.

Dog of the Day: Stella the Yorkshire Terrier Shih Tzu Mix

Stella! Stella is a friendly sort, which is a good thing, because she is the official customer service department, spokesmodel, and canine liaison for An Urban Tail (Facebook, or here for Instagram), which makes, in Stella’s own words, ‘Woof woof bark arr arr grr!’ Or, in the words of her human business partner, ‘Handmade Upcycled Dog Goods’.

Unfortunately their online etsy store is currently offline after a disagreement of some sort with a business partner — I gather Stella and she had some sort of artistic differences — but they sell at markets in the San Francisco area sometimes, and if you like them on Facebook or follow them on Instagram you’ll probably hear about it when they get their new online store set up. Hope it’s soon!

In the mean time, Stella, a Yorkshire terrier shih tzu mix, is rocking her customer service outfit. At 12 years old, she is blind in one eye, but leads a very active lifestyle, and keeps herself young by plenty of aerobic exercise and lots and lots of sniffing. When asked what her favorite part of living in San Francisco was, she said, “Whimper scratchscratchscratch whine”… oh, I used that joke already, didn’t I?

This is an ‘upcycled’ shirt… cut down from a tee shirt found at a thrift store. I LOVE it!

Dog of the Day: Mattie the Cocker Spaniel Golden Retriever Mix Puppy

Mattie just wants to be your best friend. And your best friend, and your best friend, and EVERYBODY’S best friend!

Cocker spaniel golden retriever mix puppy? Well, that’s my guess. Mom didn’t know, so I did my best.

Mattie managed to get a really good lick in across the back of my phone, just after this picture was taken. Consequently, I have one picture of a dog tongue, very close up.

Dog of the Day: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

I ran into two other dogs on my trip back from Indiana to San Francisco. This one, a very happy and friendly Cavalier King Charles spaniel, I ran into at the San Francisco airport. Her mom was busy at a food counter, but several people snuck in brief greetings on the way by.

The other dog was a ridiculously adorable 7-month-old puppy named Ava Grace that I ran into in the airport in Chicago. I was walking down one of the terminal corridors, and I was about 2 hours early for my flight so I was dawdling. I saw a couple carrying around this adorable happy puppy and I said, “Excuse me, hello, I’m a licensed dog blogger, and I’m afraid I’m going to have to take some pictures of your dog.” I got a couple weird looks, but I’m used to that. But when I gave them my card, they said, “Oh, wow, she’s from San Francisco! We’re headed back there right now!” And yes, this dog was on my flight.

And I took over 50 pictures and not a single one of them came out, because the dog was wiggly and the light was dim. DAMMIT!

If that isn’t a doggie smile then you can take away my dog blogger license.

Dog of the Day: Assistance Shiba Inu In Training

Ran into this fine example of awesome doggitude — the first assistance shiba inu I’ve ever met! — when I was flying out to Indiana for Christmas, in the San Francisco Airport. In fact, as I recall, he was even on my flight. I didn’t get his name, unfortunately, but I do remember that his dad told me he was kind of nervous with the sudden giant crowd of noisy people around him, so I didn’t get too close.

Damn, shiba inus are ridiculously photogenic. You more or less can’t get a bad picture of one.

I gather he had to sit in a carrier under a seat. He seems kind of big for that.

Ears forward, tail up-ish… he doesn’t look too freaked out to me.
