Sunday Switchup: Moth

I know we have several birders in the audience. I wonder if we have any… um…

…well, if someone who knows a lot about and likes birds is a birder, then I wonder what one would call someone who knows a lot about and likes bugs?

Anyway, I have no idea what kind of moth this is, but it was quite pretty. Also quite dead.

Some Kind Of Moth, I Don't Know, What?

Maybe I should have saved this for moth-er’s day?

Caturday Supplement: Cat in Mission Dolores Park

There was a cat gathering today at Mission Dolores Park. I know, I know, I should have posted about it here before going to it. In my defense, it has been a very busy and exhausting few weeks… I’m about to start a new job, and dealing with the fallout of my medical issues from a few weeks ago (and my insurance company is making it has hard as possible).

So instead, I’m going to be posting some pictures of cute kitties from the event over the next few Caturdays, so you can enjoy it vicariously.

Tiger Tabby Cat

Most of the cats were actually having a surprisingly good time.

Tiger Tabby Cat

One of those confusing cat postures, because it looks sort of angry but it’s not. Ears forward means ‘I’m not upset’ and eyes mostly closed means ‘I don’t feel like I have to be really careful and watchful around you’. This cat was, in fact, soliciting scritches, which she got soon afterwards.

Dog of the Day: Cody the (Laundry Dog) Golden Retriever

Cody is all grown up now, and he likes to perch on top of the washing machines in the laundromat and wag at people as they walk by. He figured out how to get up there all by himself. It is totally adorable, and (since he only comes by when his dad comes in to shut the place down at 11 at night) really hard to get any good pictures of.

Everyone who walks by this laundromat at 11 at night stops to say hello to Cody. Most people squeal, too.

Dog of the Day: Watson the 5-Month-Old Miniature Schnauzer

It’s another Watson! And I would not like to pit the two Watsons against one another in a cuteness contest, because I think the collateral damage would be terrible.

Miniature Schnauzer Puppy Smiling

It constantly amazes me that some people can’t read dog expressions, but do fine with human ones. I mean, look at that face. How could you not know that’s a happy face?

Dog of the Day: Oberon the Jack Russell Mix Puppy

Oberon (Obee to his friends, which I’m not one of… quite yet) was totally adorable in his cone of shame the first time I saw him, and his mom didn’t want me taking pictures of him in such an embarrassing situation. Fortunately, I ran into him a few days later, after he’d gotten his collar off. He was a little leery of me, but we’ll probably be seeing each other enough to get to be friends.

Mostly White Tricolor Jack Russell Terrier Mix

Interesting coloration. I’m doing a little research into what it means.

Can’t guess what the Jack Russell is mixed with. Can’t be Chihuahua, that’s for sure.

It even looks like the two sides of his face have different expressions.

Dog of the Day: Momo the Shiba Inu Puppy

A special puppy to welcome Autumn back to San Francisco tomorrow. (The name ‘Momo’ has a special meaning for her. Especially a ‘Momo’ with such cute toes.) Momo, a girl, was 7 months old when this picture was taken.

Momo likes people, which is a good thing because people really really like Momo.

How could anyone resist petting that fur?

Somehow I don’t think she’s minding this one bit.

Sunday Swap: Pelagic Cormorant?

I am going to switch things up a bit here: when I use my caturday supplements for other things besides cats, I get complaints from my cat-loving readers. But I have a bunch of pictures of other things, and some of them are even kind of neat. So I am going to try to mostly do cats on Saturdays, and ‘Sunday Swaps’ on Sundays. They’ll mostly be animals, with perhaps the occasional vista or city scene.

Today, we have a cormorant. It might be a Brandt’s cormorant, but I am going to hazard a guess, based on a book that calls their necks ‘snaky’, that this is a pelagic cormorant. I took a picture of him against the water, and then he helpfully flew away and silhouetted himself nicely against a houseboat. That’s a lot more cooperation than I typically get from birds.

Strange-looking birds. Those necks really are quite flexible.

See? Snaky!

I was, alas, not quite close enough to find out what kind of sounds cormorants make.

Caturday Supplement: SPCA Sibs

Dropped off a donation at the SPCA today — I have long since blown through the amount I said I’d donate from tee shirt and tote bag sales, but I am getting some discounts on pet stuff from Sears so I’m donating regularly now.

And I went through the facility and took a bunch of adorable kitty pictures, so I will have plenty of cats for the next few Caturdays. These two were especially adorable. And they’re still adoptable, so feel free to stop by the SF SPCA and take them home!

Edit: And lo, I did spell ‘SPCA’ wrong. Am I good or what?

Grey Tiger Tabby Kitten

He found me fascinating. Briefly.

And then came the distraction.

I hope they get adopted as a duo, they clearly love playing together.

Confusing Double Dog Day: Magnet and Velcro the Keeshonds

So very confusing. These two are apparently the same two I ran into back when one of them was just a puppy, in a local pub. And when I was there, I very conscientiously wrote down the following note: “Athena bigger 1 yr f, Bandit or Bandito m 10 wks Keeshonds”.

And yet now their mom and dad insist that their names are, and always were, Magnet (the older girl, now 2 years old, in the fetching red leash) and Velcro (the younger boy, just barely 1 year old, in the handsome blue combination). And I must admit, for a breed whose fur will pick up just about anything, those are a pretty good pair of names. And yet, where in the world did I get Athena and Bandit from? I don’t know… it seems to me that someone was teasing me, either now or then. (Just perhaps it was some random bar patron, who answered the question? Who knows.)

Ah well. I can put up with some ambiguity, if it means I get to photograph two gorgeous pups like these.

Some more pictures from out in front of our local watering hole, ‘The Bell Tower’.

They’re one of those spitz-y kinds of dogs with the great grin.

I don’t know what I did to deserve those expressions, but whatever it was, I hope I can keep doing it.

Dog of the Day: American Akita

I’ve always thought it was a bad idea to drive a pickup with a dog in the back. Dangerous! But the dogs sure do see to love it.

Red Akita In Pickup Truck Bed

There are ALMOST no strip malls in the entire city of San Francisco. This is one of the very few.
