Dog of the Lazy Day: Some Kind of Terrier Thingie

I’m really tired, and I need bed. So here is a post from the North Beach Festival, a few weeks ago, when The National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi held a ‘Blessing of the Animals‘. There were literally dozens of dogs in the church. This one had on her Sunday best. (Anyone have a guess as to what she is?)

Edit: Grrr. WordPress is having trouble posting to schedule again. Grr grr grr.

Most of the blessed animals were not blessed with skirts.

Dog of the Day: Lulu the French Bulldog

I was walking by Harputs, a store in the Union Square area, when I noticed a svelte French bulldog peering out the window at me. So of course I had to go in and say hello. It turns out that Lulu is indeed the Harputs store dog (and they have an awesome picture of her there), and as well as her lovely collar selection, also has her own line of human clothing, for when you want to wear your dog on your chest. I have to say, some of it is nearly as cute as my own designs. Nearly. Almost. (Envy? No, no, whatever makes you say that?)

Oh, I almost forgot: Lulu has a facebook page, too.

Red Fawn French Bulldog

Lulu is a 4-year-old mother of 13. That must be awfully stressful, but I can see she doesn’t let it get to her.

If you stop by Harputs, give Lulu a skritch or two from me!

EXTENDED CORGI WEEK: Sula and Plato Pre-dux

Is ‘pre-dux’ even a word? And if so, does it mean ‘before the duke?’

I dunno. Anyway, I found this and I just had to use it to wrap up corgi week. Because this is Plato and Sula, but these are pictures I took of them about six months before the other pictures. While someone different was walking them, completely in a different part of town. And I didn’t realize I even had the pictures until yesterday, when I was searching my notes for ‘Plato’ and found TWO dogs named Plato. Both corgis. Both with a friend named ‘Sula’… okay. Probably not.

They really are a gorgeous pair when they’re not soaking wet, aren’t they?

EXTENDED CORGI WEEK: Sammy Davis Jr.

I am extending corgi week at least another day. And I am STILL nowhere near through the corgis I have. But I think I may stop after this one, so as not to overload you all with an excess of adroability.

My notes say that this particular corgular unit is twelve years old, and is the dog of ‘Bud E Luv‘, famous San Francisco lounge singer. Works for me!

Tricolor Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Not sure if Sammy is an official ‘fluffy’, or is just on the fuzzy side of normal.

Tricolor Pembroke Welsh Corgi

There’s a more typical ‘Sammy’ expression. I kind of cheated: that last pic was the only one out of twenty or so where he wasn’t grinning.

Tricolor Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Almost looks like a cut-down german shepherd body.

CORGI WEEK: Double Damp Dog Day

I have not yet decided whether to extend corgi week out a little longer, since I have a few more corgis left in my backlog. But in case I don’t, I wanted to make absolutely certain to post these two wet-but-adorable friends. Sula (the tricolor, a 4-year-old girl) and Plato (in red, a 5-year-old boy) are best friends, and they don’t mind getting a little damp when it’s foggy outside.

‘Courgette’ means zucchini in French. I just realized that a corgi is basically zucchini-shaped, except with legs. Barely.

Sula seems a little bit… intense.

Pure joy. Or, as I like to call it, ‘Essence du Corgier’.

Caturday Supplement: Kitty Grooming

We interrupt this Corgi Week to bring you the following adorability:

The Groom Room (who I have featured a few times before here) has recently gotten a new regular: a cat who just hangs out with all the doggies in the little doggie play area. I’m not sure if she belongs to the owners or they’re just sitting her during someone’s summer vacation, but she is an adorable little oasis of calm in a sea of little bitty dogs wiggling around and poking their noses into stuff.

Tortoiseshell Cat

The patented cat comfort-sprawl.

Torties are so gorgeous.

Every time I go by, the cat’s sitting on a different bed. (Also, blah, I hate taking pictures through windows. Niiice reflection.)

CORGI WEEK: The Adventures of Nico and the Spotty Puppy Belly OF DOOOOOM!

I was wandering around San Francisco yesterday, and decided to stop by Lafayette Park, which has recently reopened after being closed for, what, a year? Two? Anyway, I was chatting with a woman about her boyfriend’s dog, when the best kind of serendipity happened: I looked up, and there was a corgi for corgi week! And not just any corgi: a ridiculously cute corgi puppy. I of course ran off after the puppy. To the woman I was talking to: I’m sorry if I was rude. I realize most grown men don’t run squealing after dogs, even corgi puppies. But, well, I’m probably not the strangest thing you’ll meet in San Francisco, after all. 🙂

As for Nico, he is 4 months old, and was born on a farm in Georgia. Apparently his family wanted to be very sure that the pups got good homes, so they actually flew out to San Francisco to make sure that he would be treated well. To them I say: you clearly picked the right people, because these two obviously adore their pup. As well they should.

PS: Anyone happen to know how to tighten up (get rid of the space in between the pictures in) the triptych at the end? I’m using an html table (couldn’t find any other way to get the pictures on one line.)

When I saw him from afar, I thought he was a cardigan pup. But nope, he’s a pemmie.

CORGI WEEK: Havelino the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Redux

Does anyone besides me remember Havelino? We last saw him when he was a mere 9 weeks old. And at the time, I thought that he was at the absolute pinnacle of cuteness. And then, about 11 months later, I ran into him again, and… well, I’ll let you see for yourself.

Oh, incidentally, someone reminded me that I should post a follow-up on the fundraiser we did for Glenn Farr. Well, Glenn is doing okay (but not great) medically, and the fundraiser was quite successful, raising well over $2500, which is almost certainly enough to keep him in his apartment until the paperwork is done for SSI and other aid. Thanks everybody who contributed!

Even at one year plus, Havelino is quite a compact corglet.

Goofy corgi face. EVERY face Havelino makes is a goofy corgi face.

CORGI WEEK: Barclay the Cardigan

It’s a cardigan-again! I think, with the three from Monday and one from today, that I have now posted nearly as many cardigans this week as I have the entire history of the blog. You just don’t see that many of these guys around, which is a real shame.

I ran into Barclay on the way to work, on a rainy day (a real rarity for June.) Most of my pictures didn’t come out, so I shamelessly hit up his mom for a few from her. She also forwarded me this story, which I post in the interest of perhaps saving a few corgis from a terrible fate:

You should know that about 4 months ago, Barclay had to have spinal surgery for a ruptured spinal disk. Turns out he has fragile disk syndrome (or degenerative disk disease). Maybe his story can help other corgis and their people avoid the paralysis that can occur if you don’t act quickly.
At first, I noticed that he no longer wanted to jump up on things, like the sofa, and he didn’t like standing on his hind legs. I called Barclay’s orthopedist, who said it sounded like a neurological problem, because it affected both legs. He suggested I take Barclay to my vet for a full check up, and everything my nonspecialist vet checked was fine, including Barclay’s gait when walking.
Well, I kept an eye on him after that, and 4 days later, Barclay started to lose function of his hind limbs, with one foot dragging behind him. I almost lost it. I had to search around for a veterinary neurologist who could give me an appointment right away, because this condition needs to be caught immediately or paralysis can ensue. I finally found Dr. Carrie Jurney, in the inner sunset (near 9th and Irving). She took Barclay right away, confirmed the issue as best she could with an exam, took him for an MRI in Redwood City (there is no animal MRI in SF believe it or not), and she operated on him that night.
And that is what you have to do to prevent your beloved pet from being very compromised or paralyzed.

So, corgi owners: keep an eye on those back legs. (And also on the rest of your corgi. Because ALL of your corgi is adorable.)

Wagwagwag. (Barclay is almost 8, and is a super-happy dawg.)

I always suspected that the ‘bunny-butt’ position was just as cute with a tail as without, but here we have our first confirmation!

CORGI WEEK: Pembroke (With Bonus Corgi Mix)

If it isn’t obvious from the bandana, I ran into these two at the Million Dog March. The one on the stairs was a puppy (7 or 8 months, I think) and was having just a little bit of trouble getting up the stairs and into the little trailer-thingie. Hey, I can understand why, with those teeny little legs.

I don’t know what the other dog is, but there’s a lot of cute in the mix.

The corgi mix is another one of those dogs with a super-expressive face.

I still think that the ‘cat bus’ in My Neighbor Totoro should have been a corgi. Corgis have about the same proportions as busses do. (Japanese animated movie reference. If you don’t get it, don’t worry about it.)
