Dog of the Day: German Shepherd/Collie Mix?

Another in the series of ‘we’re not really sure’ dogs. All we know is that this guy is clearly pretty awesome, and is also quite clearly convinced of that fact. Autumn thinks maybe he’s a German shepherd/collie mix, whereas I think I see a little bit of golden retriever in there. (Autumn’s the expert, though, so barring contradiction, she controls the tags. Besides… a golden mix with up ears? Does that happen?)

Anyway, whatever he is, he’s pretty clearly a self-confident and very well-trained pup. Two more pictures after the break.

I love the leg over the leash. And he used it just as you might expect, as a 'hey, wait a minute, I want to meet this guy.'

Dog of the Day: American Staffordshire Mix?

First off, I’ll readily admit that we don’t really know what this guy is. Autumn hazarded a guess that he might be an American Staffordshire mix. I wouldn’t presume to say either way, since I’ve never actually seen (or even heard of) an American Staffordshire before. I think he looks a little like a pit bull, but not much.

Second off, look at the incision on that poor guy’s backside. There’s a closer look after the break, for those of you with strong intestinal fortitude. (Okay, okay, it’s not that bad.) But this guy is clearly a real trooper: he’s got this three-inch incision in his rear flank, and he doesn’t have to even wear the Cone of Shame. That’s pretty awesome.

Oh, and a post-picture note: we’re pretty sure we saw this guy again, a month or two after this picture was taken, about three miles from where I’d seen him this first time. Same shaved area, but it looked much much better. He seemed quite happy. And he still wasn’t wearing the cone of shame. Sorry, didn’t manage any pictures.

Look at that sad expression. Poor puppy, you'll be all better soon.

Dog of the Day: Doberman Pinscher

Look at this guy. Such a dynamic pose. Look at the swept-back ears, perfectly aerodynamic. Look at the sleek, muscular body. Look at the alert face. Look at the poised position, as he holds himself ready to go into action at the slightest need.

All of this can add up to only one thing: shameless camerahound! (Just one picture for today.)

I wonder if this guy's owner ends up getting dragged from camera to camera?

Dog of the Day: Satellite Receiver Rottie

Poor guy. You can’t really tell from the picture, but trust me when I say that he really, really hated that thing. Of course I understand why he had it on: if the alternative is to chew open the stitches in your belly, it’s well worth it. But still, it makes them uncomfortable, and it sure does make them look silly.

Only one picture today, so you are excused from clicking on the title. Unless you want to leave a smart-alecy comment, of course.

Good thing it has holes in it, or looking upward in the rain would be hazardous!

Dogs of SF: Australian Shepherd

I love this guy. You really need to look at the three pictures next to one another, though, to get the full effect. (So just click on the link in the title and look at the whole post, you know you want to.)

First... the setup. (And also the cute. Aussies are smart and totally adorable.)

Dog of the Day: Small Munsterlander Mix?

Autumn stared at this guy’s pictures for a good 30 or 40 seconds, and then went and got her reference book. And then spent another thirty seconds poking through it. Finally, she shrugged in frustration. ‘Let’s say he’s a small Munsterlander mix,’ she said.

I said “Um… he’s not very small. And I’ve never heard of a Munsterlander. Is that really what you think he is?”

She said, “Small Munsterlander is a breed. They’re not that small. And no, he’s probably not. But they’re great dogs, and really rare, and it’d be cool if he was one. And that’s what he looks most like.”

So, ‘small Munsterlander mix’ he is, unless someone else has a better idea. In any case, he’s a magnificent dog. Second picture after the break.

Look at the left foreleg. Just a couple spots on each foreleg. Neat!

Dog of the Day: Puggle (Pug/beagle)

I know a couple of people who seem to be personally insulted by the ‘designer dog’ craze. They talk about how many dogs there are in shelters, and how these people should just adopt one of those, and so forth. I admit to a certain amount of sympathy for the position, but at the same time… neither of these people has anything bad to say about people who get purebred dogs with papers that go back eight generations and blah blah blah. I don’t really see much difference between that and getting a puggle.

Well, except that puggles just look a little weird to me. Cute, maybe, but unlike a lot of mixed-breed dogs, they really don’t look like they could be a breed in and of themselves… they really do look like half-one-thing, half-another.

Oh well. They’re still happy and licky, and they aren’t as liable to have their eyes pop out at inopportune moments. (Another picture after the break.)

Is it just me, or does this guy have a permanently concerned expression on his face?

Dog of the Day: Foooooofly Wiener!

Another foofly wiener for you. And yes, I am quite aware that ‘douche hound’ is not another way of saying ‘wiener dog’.

I’m pretty sure this one was a girl, but damned if I can remember anything more about her. Except that she was really cute and happy. Sorry about the quality of the second picture (after the break)… I normally wouldn’t post something that looked like the dog was suspended sideways from a wall with a leash right in front of her face, but I just had to include that little tongue-curl. So cute!

Oh, by the way: Milo, the Irish Session mascot from a few days ago, now has his own Facebook fan page, so if you thought he was adorable, join the club!

Look at those ears. So ridiculous. How can you look at those ears and not want to play with them?

Dog of the Day: English Springer Spaniel

I have a soft spot in my heart for this guy, and not just because he’s super-droopy and a complete attention hound. I also like him because I met him on the day of my birthday party. He was in a car right outside of the restaurant that we had the party at, sticking his head out at all the passers-by and begging for skritches.

I was only too happy to oblige, as you’ll see in the second photo, after the break.

It was hysterical watching this guy craning his neck at everyone that walked past.

Dog of the Day: Milo! (Half basset, half Lab? Pit Bull?)

Milo was bound to be the dog of the day eventually: he’s the mascot of the Irish music session that Autumn and a friend of hers run at Costello’s Four Deuces (pronounced COST uh low), way out in the Sunset in San Francisco. (33rd and Taraval, Sunday afternoons starting around 4:30). The session is pretty good, some good musicians show up pretty regularly. But on the weeks when Milo is there, things really shine.

Milo is a half-basset-hound. We’re not sure what else he is: maybe Lab, maybe pit bull. Whatever he is, though, he’s a real sweetheart, and one hell of a ham.  Check out after the break for a movie and a couple more pictures.

This is the famous 'puppy speedbump' position. Milo has it down pat.
