Double Dog Day: Sally and Jailbreak!

Finally, some pictures of Sally and Jailbreak playing together. These two obviously adored one another, and were having so much fun. The only downside was the fact that Sally has really super-short fur, even shorter than usual for a pit. Normally not a problem unless it’s really cold out, but when she get into really roughhousing with another dog, she doesn’t have as much protection as another dog might, so she ends up a bit scratched up. But she doesn’t mind in the slightest, or even really notice, and it’s really nothing serious (I’ve gotten worse myself while playing with dogs) so no biggie.

Oh, I forgot to mention how Jailbreak got his name. It seems that his owners were at a rescue place, looking to adopt a dog. I think it was a schnauzer-based rescue, because I vaguely recall them mentioning that they were expecting to adopt a giant schnauzer. But apparently Jailbreak decided he liked the look of them, because he broke out of his enclosure and came over to say hello. And the rest is history… and pure schnauzing satisfaction.

They make such vicious growly sounds when they’re doing this, it’s adorable.

See how thin her fur is? You can see the black spots on her skin through it.

Doggie dancing. These two remind me of these two.

She wore him out. They’re around the same age (9 months for Jailbreak, maybe a year for Sally, I think?) but she has some extra store of energy somewhere.

When it became clear that Jailbreak was done playing for a few minutes, Sally walked over to me and looked up at me like, “Okay, so, will you be my NEXT playmate? I bet I can wear you out too.”

Hope the dog claws aren’t too hard on that nice shiny new hardwood floor.

Aww! (Not shown is the too-blurry next picture, where Sally has her jaws clamped around Jailbreak’s left front leg.)

Dog of the Day: Jailbreak the Standard Schnauzer

Jailbreak! I first ran into him out in front of the Fairmont Hotel, on my way to work, on a day that Obama was driving by… this day, in fact. I walked up and made appropriate ‘aww cute!’ noises and knelt down, and his mom said, ‘oh, he’s really shy’ and then he walked over and licked my hand and let me pet him. I try not to feel too smug when that happens, since just as many dogs are inexplicably scared or repulsed by me as are inexplicably attracted to me, but I love it nonetheless.

And hey… schnauzers gonna schnauze, right?

Unfortunately, none of the pictures from that first meeting came out. Fortunately, I got to see him again, in the company of Sally.

When he’s not being nervous, this is more or less his default expression.

That back deck again. He liked it just as much as Sally and me.

Autumn might get Jailbreak as a dog-walking client. I’m looking forward to getting to see him more often, he’s fun.

Dog of the Day: Sally The Pit Bull

Through a series of funny coincidences, I found out a while back that Sully is now named Sally, and was adopted and is leading a happy life down in Glen Park, a neighborhood of San Francisco. A couple of weeks ago I was invited to come down and see her and another dog (a gorgeous standard schnauzer named Jailbreak), have a little wine, and take a bunch of pictures. How could I refuse?

A terrible problem occurred after that, though: I have 300 pictures of the two of them, and around 50 of them are adorable and not blurry. It is taking me forever to choose! So I’m going to post some pictures of Sally today, and some of Jailbreak tomorrow, and then some of both of them together on Wednesday. Assuming everything goes as planned, of course.

I’m also going to include a few pictures of Sally that her family sent me. You’ll be able to tell which ones they are, by the fact that they are incredibly perfectly adorable.

White American Pit Bull Terrier Looking Happy

Sally was friendly but a little skittish the first time I saw her, but she has absolutely blossomed in her new home.

White American Pit Bull Terrier Looking Happy

She had a huge grin on her face almost the entire time I was there. And the exceptions were mostly because when you’re wrestling with another dog it’s hard to grin and achieve a hold at the same time. Sometimes she chose one, sometimes she chose the other. Either way, she was happy.

See? So happy!

White Pit Bull Standing In Spiral Staircase Against Blue Sky

The house she lives in has a pair of gorgeous back porches connected by a spiral staircase. I’ll try not to exude any more envy than I have to. 🙂

More smiles. So glad to see her so obviously happy.

White Pit Bull Tugging On Rope Toy

Look at that sidelong expression. So cute!

White Pit Bull About To Jump For Rope Toy

She’s a hell of an athlete, too. I’m used to small dogs jumping three times their height, but…

Springy-dog.

She looked like she could have kept on doing this for hours.

I could have watched her for hours, too.

Her nose is amazing. It looks like she dunked it in a bowl of India ink.

Sad-Looking White American Pit Bull Terrier

The only two times I saw her looking other than delighted was when her friend Jailbreak and his humans left, and when I and a couple of other people left. She just loves people instantly, and then never wants them to leave again. It’s so adorable.

She even came to the window to say goodbye.

City View Of San Francisco

The view from Sally’s back porch. As I said… I’m kind of jealous.

If that is not the most profoundly comfortable dog I have ever seen, I don’t know what is. (These last two are their pictures, not mine.)

Look at that face. Just look at it.

Sunday Switchup: Wildflowers of Alameda

(Maybe I can get Anne to weigh in on just what these things are, because I have no idea on any of them except I’m pretty sure one of them is some kind of thistle, and the one with the bee butt in it is California poppy.)

Well, I was cat-sitting in Alameda last weekend, and I walked from the ferry to the house and back, because it was a nice walk so why not? A good chunk of the walk was along a fence, some of which had a retired military base on the other side of it, and also some rather nice wildflowers. I’m sure that I could say something profound and philosophical here, but it’s Sunday night and I’m tired and so how about “Oooh pretty flowers!” instead?

Edit: Added another picture of the first one, by popular demand.

Purple Wildflower

Lots of purples. Mostly purples, in fact.

Three California Poppies, One With A Bee Inside

These are the California poppies. And that’s the bee butt.

Purple Thistle Flower In Chain-Link Fence

Thith ith the thithle! I kind of like this picture.

Teeny Purple Wildflowers

No idea. They almost look like teeny tiny insects.

Hand Holding Purple Wildflowers

And these guys kind of look like little peppers.

A closer look. No, I didn’t pick them, they’re still attached.

Caturday Supplement: Macy’s Window Kittens

It’s a good thing it’s Caturday because I need kittens, stat!

Black Kitten And Tortoiseshell Kitten

These two were chasing each other around, but they eventually slowed down enough for me to get a picture or two.

I always wonder whether the kittens in there can see out.

Dog of the Day: Lima the Italian Greyhound

According to my notes, Lima is 8 years old and 9 pounds in weight, and likes suckering other dogs into chasing her and then running three times as fast as they can.

Italian Greyhound In A Hoodie

I love the fact that in all these pictures, she’s flipping around so fast that her little strings can’t keep up.

Italian Greyhound In A Hoodie

Don’t know how I lucked out and got these without just getting a blur.

Some dogs really do need clothes. Like ones with almost no fur and zero body fat.

Dog of the Day: Pug

I have only posted two pugs since 2013. This is quite remiss of me, and probably makes me a bad person.

Tan Pug Tied To A Pole

Very outgoing pup… she waddled over to everyone who stopped, or was walking by slow enough.

Tan Pug Tied To Pole With Strange White Line On Eye

One of the strangest-looking dog eyes I’ve ever seen. Not sure if she’s blind or not, but that’s not a reflection, the eye looks the same in all my pictures.

Tan Pug Tied To Pole

Pugs have very expressive faces, but I feel like, just like bulldogs and other saggy-faced breeds, most of what I read into their faces comes from me.

Dog of the Day: Cola the Catahoula/Dachshund Mix

It’s hard enough to believe in a Catahoua/Dachshund mix, but what’s even more amazing is this: the first time I ran into Cola was over a year ago… and at that point he was already a year old! (None of those pictures came out, unfortunately.) So he’s not actually a puppy, he just looks like one.

I’m working on a big post involving an adorable dog named Sally, but life keeps intervening…

Small Blue Merle Mixed-Breed Dog

Truly the ‘eternal puppy’.

A devastating gaze.

Dog of the Day: Chewbacca the Yorkshire Terrier

Chewy! He’s 8, and adorable, and there’s nothing whatsoever wrong with him. So why was he in a baby carriage? And why was a woman walking along next to the baby carriage carrying a baby? Well, apparently the little group had someplace to get to and a limited amount of time to get there, and Chewbacca’s legs were just too short to keep up, and it turned out to be easier to carry the baby and push Chewbacca in the pram.

Hey, we all deserve a little spoiling now and again.

Sunday Switchup: Stinson Beach Scenery

Was a pretty hike.

Autumn and I were in a relatively minor car accident Saturday night: we were creamed from behind while stopped in traffic on a freeway. We’re both stiff, sore, and annoyed, but so far at least we don’t seem too badly injured. The car still moves under its own power, but it makes ominous noises and the back hatch no longer closes, and there are various other issues. It’s vintage 1997, so I suspect that it may be totaled, which is a shame because the engine was in quite good shape, and I really don’t want to have to buy another car. Blah.

Ah well. It could have been much worse.
