Sat-Bird-Day Supplement: Seabirds of San Francisco

Just a few sea-and-estuary-birds for your Saturday enjoyment.

Great Egret Among Geese

Canada geese (not ‘Canadian’, apparently) and what I think is a ”great egert’ and the back half of another.

Sea Gull Flying

Wester Gull flying. Yes, they’re annoying, but they’re pretty too.

Dog of the Day: Border Collie

I guess this guy belongs to someone who works on Polk Street, who had him tied up outside the workplace, and was coming out every ten or fifteen minutes to spend time with him. I can’t quite decide how I feel about that.

Low effort post today… work is being more than usually frustrating.

Tricolor Border Collie

Those ears.

Dog of the Day: Yuko the Formosan Mountain Dog/Whippet Mix

I can’t think of too many breed mixes more random, but it seems like Yuko turned out okay. I think she’s a Taiwan rescue dog, too. These were taken during the one month of the year that whippets and whippet mixes don’t need sweaters in San Francisco: September.

If I had fur that short (which, alas, I do these days) and that little body fat (which I don’t, also alas!) I’d want a sweater too.

A very noble expression, on a very noble face.

And there are the ears!

Dog of the Day: Clancy the Irish Terrier

I ran into Clancy being walked by his owner, a Chinese gentleman who happily informed me that he was named Clancy and was an Irish Terrier. Although he didn’t say so explicitly, I wonder whether he might have been named for the Clancy Brothers (an Irish music group that Autumn dislikes rather intensely).

Irish Terrier

“And from the light there came the Dog of Day/Who chased the squirrel that stole the moon away!” (No, that’s not Irish. I just made it up.)

Wheaten-Coat Irish Terrier

They’re very flat dogs, aren’t they?

Dog of the Day: Mika the Husky

Mika needs lots of petting and chin rubs and such. (I’m just doing her a favor and passing along this little tidbit, so that if any of you happen to see her you can act accordingly.)

Black and White Siberian Husky

About 5 seconds before this picture was taken, Mika was being totally goofy. It takes me almost exactly 5 seconds to pull out my camera, turn it on, and get ready to shoot. Grr.

Black and White Siberian Husky

Fortunately, I needn’t have worried: there was still plenty of goofiness after I finally got the camera out.

Black and White Siberian Husky

Lucky guy with an utterly awesome zany-dog.

Black and White Siberian Husky

We haven’t had one of these in a while.

Dog of the Day: Figaro the Dreadlocked Poodle

I was not aware that dreadlocks on poodles were a ‘thing’, but apparently they are. All rightie, then.

White Miniature Poodle With Dreadlocks

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything look more like a mop. And that includes mops.

White Miniature Poodle With Dreadlocks

Well, he’s trying to look at me…

White Miniature Poodle With Dreadlocks

Ah, there’re the eyes. And the scrawny little legs. Man.

Dog of the Day: Mookie the Magical Pit Bull/Border Collie Mix

I was walking along the Embarcadero the other day when I saw this distinctive little pup. (I think she’s actually still a puppy although I didn’t remember to record her age.) Am I alone in thinking that she has been Marked By Fate For Greater Things?

Her mom says that she and her partner considered naming her ‘Hermione’ but that got squelched because, well, can you imagine yelling ‘HEEEEERE HERMIONE HERMIONE HERMIONE’? Although ‘Hermione Ranger’, or maybe ‘Hairy Potter’, would be pretty awesome names…

Black and White American Pit Bull Terrier/Border Collie Mix With Lightning Bolt Pattern on Her Back

Look at that. I have never seen a marking like that before, and I have seen a LOT of dogs.

Aww… coy look. She’s a real cutie.

Black and White American Pit Bull Terrier/Border Collie Mix

A slightly dubious expression. The translucent pink ear just makes it cuter though.

Mookie was pretty tired after a really long walk, so she needed a little pep talk (and some chin skritchies) from mom.

Caturday Supplement: The Kitty From Cupertino

I have to go down to Los Gatos (a town in the South Bay, for those of you out-of-towners) sometime and find a cat to take pictures of. Meanwhile, enjoy these pics Autumn took of a cat she found while she was hiking around Cupertino.

Tortoiseshell and White Cat

Look at those headlamps. I only wish I had eyes like that.

Grey Tabby and White Cat

When I look at her, I get the impression of a woman in a fur coat and an ermine stole. Is it just me?

Pomba the Rhodesian Ridgeback/German Shepherd Mix From Kinshasa

Pomba from Kinshasa. Say it out loud: it just rolls right off the tongue.

Tan Rhodesian Ridgeback/German Shepherd Mix With Semi-Floppy Ears

Pomba makes a heck of a good goodwill ambassador.

Tan Rhodesian Ridgeback/German Shepherd Mix With Half-Flopped Ears

Someone got an unexpected birthday surprise: she got to pet this fine pup.

Tan Rhodesian Ridgeback With Half Floppy Ears

The de rigueur nose shot.

Rhodesian Ridgeback/German Shepherd Mix With Very Pronounced Ridge

Look at how pronounced that ridge is.

German Shepherd/Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix With Very Pronounced Ridge

I don’t think I’ve ever met even a full Rhodesian with a ridge that pronounced.

Dog of the Day: Nilla the Auto Spa Pug

I took my car to the ‘Auto Spa‘ the other day for a well-deserved interior cleaning (aka ‘dredge the potato chips from under the driver’s seat’). It wasn’t until I got there that I discovered that this was a true ‘Dogs of SF’ establishment: they have a store dog, Nilla the pug. That, and the fact that they did a great job on my car, officially earns them the DoSF seal of approval.

One-Eyed Pug in a Comfy Chair

Yes, he’s missing an eye. Doesn’t seem to bother him any.

Pug

There is nothing like a pug for giving one the hairy eyeball.
