Double Dog Day: Two French Bulldogs

These two were chilling out in front of the Crossroads Café, begging for skritches. (Someday I’ll be able to remember the difference between French bulldogs and Boston terriers. Until then, there’s Google image search.)

French Bulldogs

There are a few places to tie up dogs outside this cafe. They were tied up at the the 'we get to lick everyone going in or out' location.

French Bulldogs

Those two have never met the dogs before. They just walked up and said 'Oh god look at those cute little dogs!' Kindred spirits.

French Bulldogs

I am not sure how I got his attention, but you must admit, it's cute!

(Sorry boys, I don’t think your affection-hunting technique would work for me.)

Dog of the Day: 2011 Wrap-Up & 2-year Blogiversary

I’ve noticed that a log of blogs seem to be doing wrap-ups for the year, complete with all sorts of pretty graphs and arrows and pictures and comparisons. (“My blog got more than 223 San Francisco cable cars’ worth of visitors!” “Oh yeah? Well, my blog served up more documents than a standard-sized US mail van can hold!”)

I don’t have any of that, because I don’t use one of the blogging services, and neither Google Analytics (which I do use) nor the stat software I run on the server provides pretty pictures meant for human consumption. However, it does seem like a reasonable time to do one, not just because it’s a new year but because it was two years ago this month that I really started posting on this blog in earnest. (In November 2009, I posted once. In December, about 18 posts, with large gaps. In January, 30 posts on 29 days, and since then it’s been pretty much daily.)

So, one thing I’ve learned about my readership from these site statistics is that I have quite a lot of sophisticated readers who don’t like to be tracked by Google Analytics. Even discounting all of the traffic I get from automated web crawlers of one kind or another (such as the Google search indexer and the Google image crawler), and the traffic from blog spammers, there is still a significant difference between what my native site counter says and what Google’s tools say. There’s also another problem: I didn’t move the site to its current location until March of last year, and I didn’t start using Google Analytics until May. So both of these sets of numbers are incomplete. Which is why I’ll be using average monthly numbers instead of whole-year numbers.

Although there is this disparity, I’m still going to use the google numbers for everything except the total data figures. Why? Because it’s really hard to filter out all the web crawlers and robots and such. Man, this web stuff is complimicated.

  • Average unique visitors per month: 2695
  • Average visits per month: 3164
  • Average pages served per month: 6066
  • Average data served per month: 11 gigabytes
  • Unique visitors in December: 4394
  • Total visits in December: 4879
  • Pages served in December: 10,698
  • Data served in December: 20 gigabytes
  • Proportion of visitors from the US: over 4/5
  • Proportion of visitors from California: about 1/4
  • Proportion of visitors from the SF Bay Area: almost 1/7
  • Proportion of visitors from San Francisco itself: over 1/8
  • Second, third, and fourth largest countries by visits: Canada (5%), the UK (2.5%), and Australia (1%).
  • Top ten US cities for Dogs of SF readers: San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Portland (Oregon), Berkeley, Oakland, Redding (California), Seattle, and Hayward (California).
  • Top ten non-US cities: Toronto (CA), London (UK), Vancouver (CA), Ottawa (CA), Sydney (AU), Edmonton (CA), Melbourne (AU), Calgary (CA), Cairo (yes, Egypt), Dublin (Ireland).

So it looks like my little community is growing. Hooray! (There were a couple of large spikes in December, including one day where I had well over a thousand unique visitors, when I posted links to a couple of dogs to a discussion on Reddit, so I don’t expect January to be quite as good as December… but who knows?)

What’s next for DoSF? Well, I’m working on a DoSF store, possibly including the option for people to purchase pictures of their dogs (or someone else’s dog!) printed to canvas. There’s a local company in San Francisco that does an incredible job of this, if you give them good artwork. And I may also be getting an occasional guest blogger in. Stay tuned, dear readers!

And in the mean time, here’s a picture of one of the parks that I visit to find dogs to take pictures of.

Rincon Park

Rincon Park. Why a giant bow and arrow? I don't know. Why not? This is San Francisco.

Dog of the Day: Uno the Shar-Pei/Bulldog Mix

Get a load of this guy. A shar-pei/bulldog mix should be just about the saggiest dog you’ve ever seen, and Uno just isn’t.

Why? Well, for the most part, it’s probably just genetics. Maybe shar pei ‘sag’ comes from a different set of genes than bulldog ‘sag’? But there’s also something else going on here… Uno got an inadvertent facelift! Apparently he had some kind of tumor on his forehead, and when it was removed, one consequence was that stitching him back up tightened the skin on his face. Awesome.

Shar-Pei/Bulldog Mix

I ran into Uno at the Delancy Street Restaurant, on the Embarcadero. Good food, as Uno surely can tell.

Shar-Pei/Bulldog Mix

There's a good shot of the facelift scar.

Shar-Pei/Bulldog Mix

He has that 'if you're awesome and you know it' look.

Shar-Pei/Bulldog Mix

I love the skulls on the collar. "WARNING! DO NOT APPROACH THIS DOG OR YOU WILL BE LOVED TO DEATH!"

Caturday Supplement: Sitting in the Catbird Seat

Ever heard that phrase before? It means ‘sitting pretty’ or ‘in a great position’. First appearance in print is in a James Thurber story called ‘In the Catbird Seat‘, although he picked it up from legendary sportscaster “Red” Barber, who picked it up in Cincinnati.

Anyway, for this Caturday, I’d have to say that this bird sure looks like he’s sitting in the catbird seat. (And, for newcomers, I don’t just post cats on Caturday, I post whatever I have that isn’t a dog.)

African Grey Parrot

Meet Jason. He's a 22-year-old African Grey Parrot. Funny thing about parrots: the bigger they are, the longer they live. Exact opposite of dogs.

African Grey Parrot

I have rarely seen an animal that looks more like someone dipped a body part in a bucket of paint... and that includes a few animals who did have a body part dipped in paint.

Dog of the Day: Xander (Alexander) the Shiba Inu Mix

Xander’s 3/4 Shiba Inu. The other 1/4? Well, we’re not sure. Either way, he’s cute and his momma loves him like a rock! (For you Paul Simon fans out there.)

Shiba Inu Mix

Yes, that's a stone (concrete?) painted statue of a bulldog in the background. Ten points for anyone who can tell me what establishment this is in front of.

Shiba Inu Mix

For some reason I can totally picture this dog with a little tie on. I wonder why that is?

(Slightly Late) Dog of the Day: Very Patient Australian Shepherd

Good thing that this sweetie is patient, because I got to her a little late.

(Had an appointment with a large strange piece of medical equipment this afternoon, and I didn’t quite get a chance to post a dog beforehand. Sorry ’bout that.)

Australian Shepherd

She was being patient out in front of the Crossroads Cafe. What a sweet face.

Australian Shepherd

It kind of amazes me that dogs still get their winter coats, even in the super-mild San Francisco winters.

Lafawnduh

Yes, yes, I know I just posted a heterochromatic Aussie. What can I say... they're gorgeous!

Australian Shepherd

I love this pose. Faithful companion waits patiently for master to return. She even looks casual about it.

Australian Shepherd

It wouldn't be a Dog of the Day without a little tongue showing.

Double Dog Day: Pepper the Australian Cattle Dog/German Shepherd Mix (?) and Unidentified Chihuahua

Compare and contrast, children.

Chihuahua and Australian Cattle Dog/German Shepherd Mix

It still sometimes boggles my mind that these two animals can produce viable offspring.

Dog of the Day: Jasper the 4-Month-Old Labradoodle.

Another incarnation of Fozzie Bear. Although, to be honest, I guess he really looks more like Rowlf the Dog. (Who was always a favorite of mine anyway.)

Labrador Retriever/Poodle Mix

That's my brother, Brad, who was in town for New Year's. We went walking through SF, and he didn't seem TOO impatient when I stopped every dog we walked past for pictures.

Labrador Retriever/Poodle Mix

You can't really tell from the pictures that he's a puppy at all. He totally is. He bounces around and licks everyone and is full of puppyness.

Labrador Retriever/Poodle Mix

Not hard to guess where the name came from. Do a google image search for 'jasper stone'.

Poodle/Labrador Retriever Mix

Taken along the Embarcadero. That's the piers in the background.

Labradoodle

He makes this face a lot. I don't know what it means, but it made me giggle every time.

Labradoodle

When did 'Labradoodle' become a thing? They seem to be pretty great dogs, but it's kind of an undignified name.

Dog of the Day: Rumor the Border Collie/Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever

You don’t see many toller mixes around, and it’s no wonder: if there were more of them they’d totally take over the place. So cute!

Rumor looooves people. However, Rumor does not love cameras. In fact, she was totally lovable (begging for belly rubs) before I took mine out, and a little hostile after. That’s a first… sometimes the owner doesn’t like cameras, but I’ve never run into a dog that didn’t. But apparently it’s not that rare for rescue dogs to be afraid of ‘men with something in their hands’, so maybe that was it.

Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever/Border Collie Mix

Adorable smile.

Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever/Border Collie Mix

It almost looks like one of her ears is going to creep up on top of her head.

Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever/Border Collie Mix

She even has the toller's little white blaze in the middle of the forehead, although it's a bit hard to see.

Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever/Border Collie Mix

Rumor is 4.5 years old. Can you believe it? She totally looks like a puppy.

Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever/Border Collie Mix

My brother used to look just like that when he stuck his tongue out at me.

Happy New Year’s Dog: Jasper the Leonberger

Here’s a Happy New Year’s Dog for you!

Jasper is only 8 months old. He’s 90 lbs and will probably end up around 150-160 when all is said and done. Huge-mongous! Jasper’s owner runs a Leonberger rescue called ‘LeoPALS‘, but Jasper is a pedigreed show dog, or will be when he gets old enough. Right now he’s just a gigantic snuggly puppy.

One final note (added late): if you have any interest in the Leonberger and its history, a friend of Jasper’s mom named Caroline Bliss Isberg, who is writing a book on the subject, compiled a little article here.

Leonberger

I bet his owner was very, very tired of people asking to take pictures of her dog by the end of that day. It was only 8:30 AM and I wasn't even the first.

Leonberger

The gentleman in the picture is entirely unrelated to the dog, but I do know him. He has two golden retrievers that I've taken pictures of. Why is he in the picture? Because he knows an awesome dog when he sees one, I guess.

Leonberger

My brother used to spoil pictures in that EXACT same way when he was a pup- er, I mean, a kid.

Leonberger

Is it just me, or does he bear a certain resemblance to a moose in this picture?

Leonberger

I'm proud to call Jasper our New Year's Dog. Here's hoping your 2012 and mine is anywhere near as awesome, fuzzy, and full of cuddles as Jasper.
