Dog of the Day: Peaches the Chow/Wheaten Terrier/Poodle Mix?

The breed mix of this snorgly and cheerful young dog is a total guess on mom’s part. The blue tongue doesn’t necessarily mean chow, but in this case I wouldn’t be at all surprised.

Funny thing about this pup: I was up in Sebastopol for a guitar workshop, and I ran into her out in front of the super-yummy downtown handmade Screaming Mimi’s Ice Cream. But it turns out she’s not just a ‘dog of the San Francisco Bay Area’, she’s a dog of SF… she lives in South Beach, right near where I work. She was just up visiting Sebastopol, same as me.

Chow/Wheaten Terrier/Poodle Mix

That's mom, of course. Notice what she's holding...

Chow/Wheaten Terrier/Poodle Mix

...because it's pretty clear that Peaches has!

Chow/Wheaten Terrier/Poodle Mix

Great expression: one part heat, one part long fur, and three parts happy dog!

Chow/Wheaten Terrier/Poodle Mix

One, two, three: awwwww...

Dog of the Day: PJ the German Shepherd/Beagle Mix

PJ is a rescue dog, and his dad told me something that ranks pretty high in my ‘saddest things I’ve ever heard about a dog’: PJ doesn’t like being petted. At all. By anyone.

Hopefully he’s still recovering from whatever awful experiences he had before being rescued, and will someday be able to enjoy skritches, as a dog should.

German Shepherd/Beagle Mix

The slightly-out but mostly-saggy ears make him look even sadder.

Beagle/German Shepherd Mix

...until he does this.

Beagle/German Shepherd Mix

Fortunately, PJ's well-trained, and doesn't get pissy if someone tries to pet him, he just slinks away a bit.

Beagle/German Shepherd Mix

A perfect 'baroo?' moment.

Dog of the Day: Penny the German Shepherd Mix

What a pretty pup! Almost dingo-y.

German Shepherd Mix

Smiley face! Also looks a little coyote-ish.

German Shepherd Mix

The forehead almost looks basenji-ish. So concerned!

German Shepherd Mix

Definitely coyote-y, and also foxy.

German Shepherd Mix

And dance-y as well!

Dog of the Day: Jasmine the Fetching Boston Terrier

Jasmine is a sucker for a thrown ball.

(Short post today, since I’m working from home, and the vpn slows everything way down.)

Boston Terrier

Here she comes!

Boston Terrier

If the ball were just a tiny bit bigger, I'm not sure she'd be able to carry it.

Dog of the Day: Tidus the Famous Corgi

Eeee! Corgi!

And now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, this one requires a little back-story. There’s a teeny tiny little house in our neighborhood, surrounded by three to five story apartment buildings and Victorians. We’re not sure, it may even be a rebuilt ‘earthquake shack‘, which were buildings built en masse after the 1906 earthquake as temporary housing. Autumn would give a whole variety of useful portions of her anatomy to live there, especially since it has a fenced-in yard. (And, truth to tell, I probably would too.)

In this house there lives a corgi. We can see him in the yard occasionally, peering out through the slatted fence at all the exciting people walking by. When he’s out in the yard, this is all he does: he loves people-watching.

So, after seeing him there for years, I finally saw mom taking him for a walk, and of course, had to stop her and take some pictures. And that’s when I discovered that mom is a fellow student of iPhone programming, and that Tidus has his own iPhone app! It doesn’t do much yet, but she’s turning it into a game, and in the mean time it is both adorable and free, so try it!

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Look at that drumstick. So ridiculous.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

One ear down, one ear up. Corgi ears are so versatile!

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Both ears back. Very aerodynamic. He kind of looks like a hood ornament.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Aww... such a plaintive expression.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Ears fully extended. I sometimes feel sorry for Pembrokes for having no tail, but dogs with floppy ears are missing out too.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Pembroke-as-buddha. Goofy buddha, admittedly.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Okay, I officially love Tidus. Where do I sign up for the fan club mailings?

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Curly tongue!

Dog of the Day: Boo the Great Pyrenees

This is the same Great Pyrenees that I posted a long time ago. So awesome. I talked to dad about Boo, and I think dad was having a little buyer’s remorse right at that moment (though he clearly adored Boo). Not too surprising, with a dog that can (and in this case was) tow one around quite effectively, being probably 50% heavier than dad.

Great Pyrenees

Okay, maybe not the most scenic of backgrounds, but the guy's body language is quite expressive I think.

Great Pyrenees

If I had two of these guys in my tent I'd never be afraid to go snow camping again.

Great Pyrenees

I thought this one was funny: someone appears to have a tree sprouting from his head.

Great Pyrenees

Happy dog! Also, no, that is not Autumn in the background, although she would adore that skirt.

Great Pyrenees

Aww. The dangling paw thing does it to me every time.

Canid of the Day: Fennec Fox!

Okay, it’s Caturday, and I don’t have any cats. What I do have is a ridiculous animal with far too much in the way of ears. Perhaps that will do instead?

(Fennec courtesy of Classroom Safari.)

Fennec Fox

I've been bitten by a few dogs in my time. I would happy add a Fennec to that list if it meant I could play with him. Well, and it didn't remove any fingers.

Fennec Fox

Super cuddly Fennec action!

Fennec Fox

I spent a while adjusting the lighting on this one. It took me some time to remember that Fennecs actually do have deep black eyes.

Fennec Fox

Look into that ear. It is like a giant, deep, dark cave. An adorably cute cave.

Fennec Fox

Aww. Poor Fennec! Don't get downhearted. Everyone thinks you're ridiculously adorable!

Fennec Fox

His ears look a little gnawed on, but nothing too terrible.

Dog of the Day: Boston Terrier

Just another day at the dog park.

Tomorrow’s post will not be a caturday supplement. But it also won’t be a normal dog-post. Stay tuned, true believers!

Boston Terrier

It's quite a bright harness, but I'm not sure it looks comfy.

Boston Terrier

The ball, on the other hand, is totally awesome. Also, look at those ear spots.

Dog of the Day: Oscar the Anatolian Shepherd Mix

Ran into Oscar at the outdoor tables of a bar near my house, in the dark. He seemed pretty awesome, though, so I tried a few flash photos, which seem to have come out okay.

Anatolian Shepherd Mix

This is Oscar gazing adoringly up at his dad.

Anatolian Shepherd Mix

Oscar spends quite a lot of time gazing adoringly up at his dad.

Anatolian Shepherd Mix

I did get him to look in my direction a couple of times too.

Dog of the Day: Stella the Miniature Australian Shepherd Puppy

She’s eight months old in these pictures… that means I can still call her a puppy, right? I think she has the most ‘up’ ears of any Aussie I’ve ever seen.

Today’s pictures are a lot of studies in ‘almost’. The one I really like is the last one in the list, but even it has an ‘almost’ attached. Not shown are another two dozen pictures that had ‘almost’ enough light to be tweakable into something recognizably canine, and a dozen more that had ‘almost’ enough shutter speed to make Stella anything more than a blur.

Miniature Australian Shepherd

Had to crop this one down, because I *almost* got all of her in the frame, but missed the feet.

Miniature Australian Shepherd

This one is 'almost interesting'. A lot of my pictures are like that: 'cute dog, so what?' Well, the blog is about dogs, but I like to see if I can get decent pictures too.

Miniature Australian Shepherd

And this one... I was ALMOST able to zoom out enough in time to catch. It still works... almost.

Miniature Australian Shepherd

This one has a whole set of 'almosts': almost all of her in the frame, almost fast enough shutter speed to capture the movement, almost held the camera still enough... and it's still almost pretty.

Miniature Australian Shepherd

I absolutely adore the woman's expression, which is approximately the same one I had when I first saw this pup. (Except mine was 'eee!' instead of 'ooo!') But I'd still like it better if I'd managed to catch it from an angle where you can see the dog's face too.
