Dog of the Day: Yorkshire Terrier

Someone needs to dress one of these pups up as a Yorkshire Pudding for next Halloween. See to it!

Yorkshire Terrier

I love the ‘action doggie’ pose.

Dog of the Day: Skye the Skye Terrier

I thought we had our second Skye terrier here, but the more I look at him, the more I think maybe he’s just our first Skye terrier, except not as wet, and having a much better fur day. If not, he sure looks a lot like Shamus, including the white ears (which are a disqualifier for a show dog of the breed: they have to have black ears, apparently.)

Edit: So, per the comments, this is Skye, and he is the brother of our first Skye terrier, Seamus! And it’s been over seven years and he’s still going strong. YAY SKYE!

Blond Skye Terrier with Blond Ears

If my ear hair looked like that, I would cultivate it, instead of ruthlessly trimming it back every few days.

Blond Skye Terrier with Blond Ears

Look at those stumpy little legs.

Caught him mid-itch.

Triple Dog Day: Black Labrador Retriever Puppy with Siberian Husky and Pembroke Welsh Corgi

I said I’d be posting more of this adventurous little pup soon, and sure enough, here she is. She was on a mission to play with every other dog at the event, and she came pretty close.

Black Labrador Retriever Puppy

Someone got a double helping of puppydog eyes.

Black Labrador Retriever Puppy

She’s a real heartbreaker.

Black Labrador Retriever Puppy Sticking His Tongue Out

Yes, that’s my leg, and my arm. Alas, not my dog.

Black Labrador Retriever Puppy Licking a Husky

Yep. She loves everyone.

Doggies doin’ what doggies do.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Black Labrador Retriever Puppy

This corgi was a little less impressed with puppy energy levels than I had hoped.

Tricolor Pembroke Welsh Corgi Barking

I think the corgi was getting a little overstimulated at the event.

Black Labrador Retriever Puppy Sticking His Tongue Out At A Surprised Tricolor Pembroke Welsh Corgi

I just like this one. If they were just on grass, with grass in the background, it’d be a favorite.

Black Labrador Retriever Puppy

She spent some time playing with the chocolate lab in the background, but I didn’t get any pictures.

Caturday Supplement: Eyebrow Kitty

As I mentioned, there were a few non-dogs that showed up at that dog fair. We already had a bunny, but here’s one of the most distinctive kitties I have ever seen. (She was adoptable but I forgot to get the shelter information. Which is probably okay, because I bet she went really quick.)

White Cat with Black Eyebrows

Add ‘white cats’ to ‘black dogs’ under the heading of ‘murder to photograph in the sun’.

White Cat with Black Eyebrows

Those eyebrows. No, I promise, they weren’t drawn on.

White Kitten with Black Eyebrows

Even my own eyebrows, formidable though they are, cannot compete!

Dog of the Day: Landseer Newfoundland Dog

As large as yesterday’s giganto-malamute was, she wasn’t the biggest dog at the street fair. That title was claimed by this lovely gentleman.

Landseer Newfoundland Dog

I don’t recall what the red spot was but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t serious.

Landseer Newfoundland Dog

They are just giant teddy bears. Is there anyone who can see one of these guys and not want to hug him?

Landseer Newfie

Autumn paged me a few days ago with ‘OMG TWO NEWFIES!!’ They’re the kind of dogs you do that with. Well, if you’re us, at least.

Dog of the Day: Giant Wooly Malamute, Pomeranian, And Special Guest Lab Puppy

Another dog from the big dawg shebang a couple weeks ago. This gal (?) was a really good sport, and liked all the people and all the dogs that she ran into.

Wooly Malamute With Pomeranian on Her Back

As I said, she was a very good sport.

Fuzzy Pomeranian

Very cute pom, but he just wasn’t getting into the spirit of the whole ‘riding’ experience.

Big Woolly Malamute Face

Things might have gone better if she had managed to turn around and give him a big smooch while he was back there.

Woolly Malamute Being Petted

Yes, that’s my arm, and Autumn’s body. We gave her plenty of love.

Black Labrador Retriever Puppy Smooching a Large Wooly Alaskan Malamute

Yes, that’s a Lab puppy. I think I may have a few more pictures of him, coming up soon.

Dog of the Day: Ein the Corgi Revisited

Instead of my usual jogging and walking today, I took public transit for most of the way to and from work. (Back problems. Should, I am told, be back to normal in not too long.)

This turned out to be serendipitous, because who should I run into but Ein the Corgi on the Muni train? She was walking from person to person… every time someone stopped petting her, she would wait patiently for about 1.2 seconds, and then go on and solicit attention from someone else. Watching her little tail-nib waggling back and forth was utterly captivating.

It’s probably good that only one of my pictures came out, because I don’t have the energy for more than one picture today.

Small Tricolor Pembroke Welsh Corgi

You can’t really see it, but Ein has the cutest little white mark line thingie on her nose. I totally recognized her instantly from it.

Dog du Jour: Jack the 7-Month-Old French Bulldog Puppy

Jack had just had… ahem… a ‘certain operation’. The cone of shame does keep the dog from doing naughty things like pulling out all their stitches, but I think it also might give the dog time to come to terms with his loss more slowly, instead of, ah, discovering it all at once.

French Bulldog with Cone of Shame

I kind of feel like they went a little overboard with the cone of shame on this one. It’s bigger than he is!

French Bulldog with Huge Elizabethan Collar

I have a real weakness for SPOTTY PUPPY LIPS.

French Bulldog with Cone of Shame

You can see the potential for puppydog eyes of doom here…

French Bulldog with Cone of Shame With Puppydog Eyes Of Doom

Yup. There they are. Heeelp meeee… meeeeltiiiiing!

French Bulldog with Cone of Shame Examining a Lime

An eminently distractible pup. Sadly, Jack was not allowed the opportunity to eat the lime.

Dog of the Day: Talented Labrador Retriever

Smart dog! And apparently this is not just a one-trick puppy, although we only had time to see one for ourselves.

Yellow Labrador Retriever

This is another pup from the pet festival we went to a couple weeks ago.

Yellow Labrador Retriever Playing Paddy-Cake

There it is. ‘Gimme ten!’

Surprise schnozz!

Special Baturday Supplement: Batkid!

A friend of mine suggested this, and I guess I really ought to post it, since probably not every single person in the whole United States has seen it yet. And, well, if there’s any animal of the week in San Francisco this week, it’s surely the bat. Alas, I was not in a position to get any pictures, so you’ll have to settle for a couple of pilfered ones.

Yesterday, San Francisco turned into Gotham City, for the benefit of one 5-year-old boy and the Make A Wish Foundation. Miles Scott, a boy who had childhood leukemia (now in remission) wished to be ‘Batkid’, and boy, did he get his wish. He worked alongside a costumed caped crusader, thwarting, among other things a bank robbery (the Riddler) and a kidnapped San Francisco Giants mascot (the Penguin).

And I even took the afternoon off… and went stumbling through the crowds, not reading the news or anything like that and wondering why it was SO DAMN HARD TO GET ANYWHERE. When, if I’d just walked straight home from work, I could have seen Batkid saving a woman who was tied to the cable car tracks (okay… so that’s actually pretty hilarious, if you’ve ever ridden a cable car at 7 miles per hour) less than three blocks from my apartment. Dammit!

Anyway, it’s pretty nice to see the city coming together to do something like this. Can you imagine what kind of world it would be if everyone got their fondest wish, once in their lives?

So: Batkid, saving a woman on Russian Hill, three blocks from where I live.

Nanananana Batkid

Okay, so she was tied to a BOMB and left on the cable car tracks.

And an awesome video about the experience:

Finally… well, it wouldn’t be complete without one of batkid’s biggest fans, would it?

Batdog

OMG IT’S BATDOG!
