DoggiEvents: Upcoming

So, still working on clearing out some space for pictures in the short term, and looking for other arrangements in the longer term.

In the mean time, here are a few upcoming dog-related events and notes in the Bay Area:

  • The Ritz in Half Moon Bay recently revised its policies to make dogs feel more welcome. They invited a bunch of local pet bloggers, including yours truly, to a little celebration of the change, so expect some photos from the Ritz in a couple weeks.
  • The Dogs of SF has hit a major milestone: our first press pass! Autumn covered the ‘World’s Ugliest Dog’ competition. Wait until you see the pictures! (Not sure when these will get posted, since Autumn will be out of town on music-related business for almost a month starting next week.)
  • San Francisco Bark For Life is July 21, raising money for cancer research. Sounds like a good time for a good cause. Check it out! Be a sponsor!
  • Also on July 21 (who plans these things, anyway?) is ‘Doggie Style Scavenger Hunt (Bring Your Dog)‘ Quote: In a city where dogs outnumber children it’s a crime there has never been a scavenger hunt directly for dog lovers. Sounds like fun!
  • Bay to Barkers is coming up quickly: July 29th! I will be there: will you?

Got any more dog-related events to share? Leave a comment and I’ll add them!

Site News: Uh… Whoops

So, I seem to have gone over-quota on my hosting account last month. To the tune of rather a significant sum of money.

To be honest, I never expected to stick with this long enough to amass 5 gigs of pictures on my hard drive, let alone actually post a full 5 gigs. And lo and behold, I have about 180 gigs of dog pictures on my hard drive, and 5 gigs of pictures on my hosting account. (And a gig of other files.)

So. I do not want to repeat that bill, so I have trimmed down a bunch of stuff and will be trimming more over the next day or two, and will resume posting once I’ve got it down below my quota again. And at that point I’ll also be figuring out how to solve the problem over the long term.

So. Brief hiatus! Sorry.

Dog of the Day: French Bulldog

I think this gal was unable to fit her tongue entirely into her mouth.

French Bulldog

She also made constant grunting noises. I can’t tell whether to find that cute or sad.

Dog of the Day: Ani the 16-Year-Old Indian Spitz

I won’t say that Ani (pronounced like Annie) is the oldest dog I’ve ever featured on here, but she’s pretty close. And she’s still doing all right… still got her eyesight, and teeth, and such. She’s an Indian Spitz, which I’d never even heard of until I took these pictures.

Still plenty of time to get those photography contest entries in by the 30th of June.

16-Year-Old Indian Spitz

The ears are really something. Trust me: their full grandeur has not yet been revealed.

16-Year-Old Indian Spitz

I swear Ani studied photography and composition. I didn’t crop this picture at all, and she was the one who framed herself. Perfectly, I might add. (Also: see what I mean about the ears?)

16-Year-Old Indian Spitz

More ridiculous earage.

16-Year-Old Indian Spitz

Another good pose: ‘noble dog before loving master.’ I wish I’d stepped back a bit and gotten them both in the frame.

Dog of the Day: Black German Shepherd Mix

Didn’t get this dude’s name, but he was wandering around the same park as yesterday’s dog. Well, wandering when he wasn’t sprinting.

Black German Shepherd Mix

The white spot is just a bit of sunlight, not an actual, well, white spot.

Black German Shepherd Mix

Some dogs are harder to keep up with than others.

Black German Shepherd Mix

I love ‘hoverdog’ photos. He totally looks like one of those funky anti-gravity bikes from The Return of the Jedi.

Black German Shepherd Mix

I admit, this is not what I generally think of when I hear the term ‘animal photobomb’, although I guess technically, since she did photobomb this picture of an animal…

Dog of the Day: Tristan the Irish Wolfhound Puppy

Autumn and I were at a park a few weeks ago, looking for the corgi meetup (which for some reason we never found!) when we saw… something.

Also, blah blah photography contest blah ends the 30th blah. Carry on.

Irish Wolfhound Puppy

This is what I saw when I got there. Fortunately I already had my camera out and ready. But I had no idea what I was looking at…

Irish Wolfhound Puppy

And then he turned around and I went… ‘Waaaait… is that… is that…’

Irish Wolfhound Puppy

‘…is that a teacup Irish wolfhound??’

Irish Wolfhound Puppy

His mom was less than impressed with my identification skills. “No. He’s a puppy.”

Irish Wolfhound Puppy

Longest damn puppy tongue I’ve ever seen, I can tell you that much.

Dog of the Day: Dingo the Teacup Australian Shepherd

I’ve posted Aussies this small before, but not often. I actually took some pictures of Dingo  the adorable before, though: it was just at dusk, and they all turned into an Australian blur. I got luckier this time!

Just had another couple of people submit for the photography contest, including a city submission and a cat submission. You guys rock!

Teacup Australian Shepherd

So teensy. And no, there’s nothing wrong with his eye, he’s just winking at me.

Teacup Australian Shepherd

I had to post this, it was too cute to pass up, despite the blown-out highlights.

Teacup Australian Shepherd

Those eyes. Also, that expression.

Teacup Australian Shepherd

And this expression. God, sometimes I wish I could be half as happy as some of these dogs.

Teacup Australian Shepherd

A playmate appears!

Adoptable Dog of the Day: Max the Super-Mellow Siberian Husky

No caturday supplement today. I am getting pretty low on cat pictures, but that’s not why: I promised that I’d post pictures of Max ASAP, because he’s down at SF Animal Care and Control looking for a home, and he’s so totally awesome that I wanted to give my readers a chance at him before he gets snatched up! (He’s a very new arrival, hasn’t even been posted on the web site yet, it looks like.)

Max is a 7-year-old super-mellow super-healthy husky. He’s definitely got the goofy/mischievous husky attitude, but in moderation, and he’s not aggressive about it. On the other hand, he got an extra dose of ‘sweet’, and just loves people, even people who poke cameras into his face for no reason. I was the recipient of multiple smooches while visiting with Max.

Siberian Husky

I mistook Max for a malamute, because he’s pretty big, but apparently only huskies can have blue eyes (normally). Maybe he just seemed big next to the petite volunteer who was walking him!

Siberian Husky

Someone socialized the heck outta this pup when he was little. Loves people, and is even polite about it.

Siberian Husky

I want to see Max perform that maneuver when there’s a biscuit balanced on his nose.

Siberian Husky

The volunteers at AC&C really seem to like their work.

Siberian Husky

Max sure seemed to like them, too. (Also: wow. Maybe someday I’ll figure out how to adjust for the terrible barrel distortion that this camera has. Yeek.)

Siberian Husky

I knew there had to be a goofy face in there somewhere.

Dog of the Day: Moose the St. Bernard

GOOD NEWS: The photography contest deadline has been extended to June 30th!

How embarrassing. I forgot the deadline of my own contest, which was supposed to have been this last Monday. To be fair, I was out camping at a music festival last weekend and frantically preparing for it for a week beforehand. But that’s no excuse.

Anyway, I love you guys. I have plenty of submissions for the contest, in the ‘dogs’ category (which, let’s face it, is the most important one, given the nature of the site), and they range from the awesome to the awesomer. I admit, I had been afraid that I was going to have to go out and cadge people on other blogs (and on reddit) to submit in order to even make the minimum of five submissions to vote on. Instead, I have my work cut out for me choosing just five!

At the same time, I only officially opened the contest to cats in the last week, so I have very few submissions from them, and I only have two submissions for the San Francisco category too! Come on, guys, I know you can do better than this, now that I know you’re paying attention. So I’m going to leave the contest open until the end of June. (Autumn goes out of town a little before then, too, which means I’ll have enough time on my hands to set up the infrastructure for voting on the finalists and such, which also helps.)

But thanks, everyone who has submitted so far. Sometimes it really does feel like I’m shouting into a well, and it’s really great to see that people really are paying attention, and are even willing to put in a little work to participate.

Now, on to today’s dog: Moose is a 7.5-year-old St. Bernard. I would have guessed at 3 years old. He’s huge and happy and cuddly and energetic (when it suits him) and he is welcome to put his head on my knee at any time, drool or not.

Saint Bernard

Those paws. Huge-mongous!

Saint Bernard

Don’t lie: every time you look at him you picture a little brandy cask under his chin, don’t you?

Saint Bernard

I wish the lighting weren’t quite so bad, this is a super-cute expression.

Saint Bernard

That’s mom. Yes, Moose almost certainly outweighs her… by a substantial margin.

Saint Bernard

Yes, mom told him to get in. Unlike the other dog I posted in the fountain, who took off and leapt in the fountain immediately after I started taking pictures of him. Which was pretty hilarious… to me at least.

Saint Bernard

Fountain in the background, drool fountain in the foreground.

Huntingdon Park fountain. The guy in the background is exercising/stretching, not break dancing.

Dog of the Day: Miles the Rhodesian Ridgeback

Miles and miles of ridgeback! This pup was actually named after Miles Davis, apparently because his wrinkly forehead reminded mom and dad of the wrinkly forehead in a famous poster of Miles Davis. Anyone know which one they’re talking about? Is it this one?

Photography contest continues apace. Need more San Francisco pictures! San Franciscites, get cracking!

Rhodesian Ridgeback

I always forget how big ridgebacks actually get.

Rhodesian Ridgeback

Ah, there are some forehead wrinkles. Probably not his full set though.

Rhodesian Ridgeback

Can almost sort of see the ridge in this one.

Rhodesian Ridgeback

Someone looks serious.

Rhodesian Ridgeback

There's a good shot of a very prominent ridge.
