DoggiEvent: Golden Gate Kennel Club Dog Show Saturday & Sunday

I should’ve posted about this earlier, but it slipped my mind to do so until now. Tomorrow and Sunday, the 28th and 29th, there’s a big honkin’ all-breeds dog show at the Cow Palace (which I like to call ‘The Center for Performing Kine’). Yours Truly will be there tomorrow (Saturday) to take pictures of some pups and pet a whole bunch more.

Also, got some pretty exciting (for me, anyway) site news coming up in the next week or two, so stay tuned!

Dog of the Day: Rhodesian Ridgeback

I always forget how big these guys are. They’re rangy!

Also, prong collar. Which brings up an anecdote about one difference in the way Autumn and I approach life sometimes. I often wondered if prong collars like that were painful. Eventually, I looked it up online, and I found a bazillion conflicting answers. And I figured, okay, well, sometime I ought to find some credible people, and see what they have to say.

Meanwhile, Autumn was wondering the same thing. So she went to a pet store, put one on, gave it a few yanks and a long, sustained, hard pull, said, ‘meh, it’s not bad at all’, and went home.

The original quote is ‘sometimes six months in the laboratory can save you fifteen minutes in the library.’ But that should probably be amended to ‘sometimes fifteen minutes in real life can save you six hours on the internet.’

Rhodesian Ridgeback

I wonder if Rhodesian ridgebacks get tired of people running their fingers down their ridges. (Nope, probably not.)

Rhodesian Ridgeback

Aww, big goofy grin. Any ridgeback owners want to chime in on what they're like? I've never met any that weren't goofy-friendly.

Dog of the Day: Border Collie

Because we haven’t seen one in a while.

An anecdote I ran into on reddit recently (here):

Yeah, my border collie totally gets that I control the car. On days when I come home without the kid, she gets concerned and tries to herd me back out to the car like, “Okay, you forgot the kid somewhere. No big deal, we’ll find out where if we go look for him. You drive, I’ll sniff.”

She paces and looks worried until I tell her it’s time to go to school to pick up the kid, then she gets all excited and relieved-looking.

Border Collie

I was at a dog park after dark the other day, and I spent a good two minutes 'dancing' with a border collie. I'd jump right, and he'd jump over in front of me. We never touched each other, just mirrored each other's movements. It was fun.

Border Collie

What's black and white and well-bred all over?

Dog of the Day: Pity (Pitufina) the Chilly Chihuahua/Rat Terrier Mix

Pitufina apparently means ‘Smurfette’ in Spanish. The things you learn, running a dog blog. Anyway, it’s been a pretty chilly few weeks in San Francisco, and Pity isn’t liking it much!

Chihuahua/Rat Terrier Mix

Fortunately, Pity's got a good friend who is more than willing to help her keep warm on the colder days.

Rat Terrier/Chihuahua Mix

Smurfette? Really?

Dog of the Day: Buddy the Adoptable Smooth-Coated Fox Terrier

I find several things about this post hard to believe. First, that Buddy is still adoptable, and nobody has snatched him up yet. He’s so sweet and friendly! Second, that this is not just the first smooth-coated fox terrier we’ve had on the site, but the first fox terrier of any kind! (Although we did have one mix.) And third… just Buddy. Buddy is ridiculous. Look at that face!

If anyone is interested in meeting Buddy, and possibly adopting him, contact Northern California Fox Terrier Rescue!

Smooth-Coated Fox Terrier

Buddy is very attentive... for short periods of time, anyway. (Also, double-fluffy-white-bonus-doggage in the background!)

Smooth-Coated Fox Terrier

Such a long face! He always looks a little concerned.

Smooth-Coated Fox Terrier

This was taken in Bernie's Grooming/City Dog, on Brannan Street. I don't know if that's Bernie, though.

Smooth-Coated Fox Terrier

Another breed of dog, like corgis, that I think are totally goofy-looking. It's awesome to have a dog that can always make you smile.

Smooth-Coated Fox Terrier

Yes, that's me in the mirror. Holy crap, I never realized I look THAT bald!

Dog of the Day: Shamus the Skye Terrier

It’s getting harder and harder to find dog breeds that I haven’t covered yet, but when I do, they’re often pretty ridiculous. Like this young (well, three-and-a-half-year-old) pup, with ears that … well… I’m not sure what to say about them, so I’ll just let you judge for yourself.

Skye Terrier

Well, it seems like he can see okay, but I'm not sure I got a whole lot of glimpses of his eyes.

Skye Terrier

The most luxuriant ear-hair ever!

Skye Terrier

Well, there I can see his eyes... can't I? No... maybe not.

Dog of the Day: Ceili!

Some wintery pictures of the honorary Dog of San Francisco, Ceili the wonder pooch. These came from Christmas in Indiana, where Autumn’s family (and Ceili) live. (Actually, a couple days after Christmas… it wasn’t snowy on Christmas.)

Ceili loves the snow, and loves catching snowballs in particular.

Golden Retriever

Autumn throws the snowballs.

Golden Retriever

Ceili just adores 'catching' them. And then they disappear. To Ceili, that's just about the funniest thing ever.

Golden Retriever

Side-catch!

Golden Retriever

Ceili would have done this for hours if Autumn had been willing.

Golden Retriever

I've heard dogs can find mice and other rodents that burrow under the snow. Maybe that's what she's doing. But I prefer to think she's trying to figure out where Autumn keeps finding those snowballs.

Site News: Slight Rearrangement

Found an easier way to fix the problem I was having: I got rid of the text at the top entirely, and just redid the banner with the site title and the logo. And cleaned up the logo. And found a fun (well, I think it’s fun) font for the title.

Please leave feedback/suggestions/etc. In particular, if you have a suggestion for the site title, let me know. I keep looking at it and thinking that the text is too heavyweight for the logo, and then I look again and think, nah, it’s fine! I dunno, I’m not, shall we say, the best layout artist in the world.

Caturday Supplement: Kitty in the Garage

Down in SOMA, around 8th or 9th, there’s a big garage-y thing that I wandered by a month or so ago. It was packed with stuff, looked like it might be being used as a studio. And as I walked up, a cat looked up at me from the front of it. I stopped and pulled out my camera, and looked back up, just in time to see the cat wander off. Grr. And then, as I watched, another one came out and looked at me. And here he is!

Cat

I petted him for a little while. This is him hanging around in the hopes of more.

Cat

And this is him deciding that if I wasn't going to pet him any more, he'd find someone who would.

Double Dog Day: Fletch the Great Pyrenees and Zoë the Akbash Dog

Ran across these three (two dogs and one man) in South Park, last September. I might’ve caught them on a bad day… they all seemed a trifle testy, although I did a couple of smiles out of Fletch eventually. Still, though, I couldn’t pass up the chance to grab a few pictures of an akbash, our first for the site. They sure are pretty!

Akbash Dog

Glowy Zoë!

Great Pyrenees Dog

Heh. What a look.

Akbash Dog and Great Pyrenees Dog

They're just about the same size, but Fletch probably weighs a couple pounds more... all fur.

Great Pyrenees Dog

I think there's a little smile lurking in that face.

Akbash Dog

Almost looks like a lab, except white, not light yellow, and BIG! (Perspective is a bit weird in this photo... she's a fair bit bigger than your average lab.)

Akbash Dog

Goofy face.
