Dog of the Day: American Pit Bull Terrier Mix

This is an American pit bull terrier mix  — not with corgi, or at least, I don’t think so — that we ran into at CorgiCon. She was very, very chill, greeting every dog and every human who approached her with friendly equanimity.

I was feeling a little down today, but I had a chance to go visit my corgi friend Tidus and my human friend Anh this evening, and a little corgi therapy really does make a lot of difference. All you people out there with a dog to cuddle, give them an extra hug for me today, and for all those other people besides me who can’t have a furry friend.

Dog of the Day: Rhodesian Ridgeback

Another CorgiCon attendee, but I can’t help but feel that there’s something… different about him. I dunno. Could it be the fact that he has legs that are about as long as a corgi’s body? Or maybe that he was bred for hunting lions that outweigh him by a factor of four to one, whereas a corgi was bred to herd cows that outweigh him by a factor of… a hundred?

Huh. I’m gonna have to say that neither of these breeds were behind the door when the raw courage was handed out.

Anyway, this fine fellow is a young adult male Rhodesian ridgeback, and was very much enjoying galloping up and down the beach amongst the corgis.

Ridgebacks are always bigger in person than I remember them being.

They also ‘gallumph’ when they run, which is always good for a laugh.

Dog of the Day: Happy Huskorgi

A happy huskorgi, from the CorgiCon beach day. For some reason most of the corgi mixes I saw when I was there were half husky. Perhaps it’s just because huskies are ridiculously awesome happy dogs with attitude, and so they go really well with corgis (which are ridiculously happy awesome dogs with attitude).

And really… taking a Pembroke and adding a giant curly fluffy tail? Sold! The even-fluff-er-than-usual hocks are just an added bonus. I do notice, though, that his legs are rather longer than a purebred corgi, if still pretty stubular.

Look at that smile. That is one happy dog.

Sunday Switchup: Top Cat Mural

Okay, so it’s not caturday, but here’s a Top Cat mural anyway. I don’t know, maybe this was advertising for the movie — it’s been around a couple years now, and Top Cat was released in the US in 2013 — but it’s still pretty good.

And no, I’m not old enough to remember Top Cat in its original broadcast, but I definitely caught a fair amount of it in syndication, lo these many years ago. It had a very catchy theme song, as I recall.

Caturday Supplement: More Macy’s Window Kittens

I dragged my brother down to the Union Square area while he was in town this week to see the Macy’s Window Kittens and Puppies (OMG there’s a live stream this year!), thus displaying that I am a bit over-fond of watching kittens in windows and that he is much more tolerant of my goofy behavior than he was when we were kids. (I was the older brother, so of course I didn’t actually care at the time, but still.)

These two were lying there semi-comatose when we walked up, and then, after maybe 10 or 15 seconds, they suddenly decided that playing was the most important thing ever.

Dog of the Day: Italian Greyhound

Didn’t get a name or address of this gorgeous gal, but I ran into her right outside the puppies and kittens Macy’s display. Apparently she was a little freaked out by the kittens.

They are SO POI?NTY.

I get the feeling that if she looked straight upward, you could use her for a lawn dart.

Happy Turkey Day!

Autumn and my brother and I went out to eat at a place recommended by a friend for Thanksgiving dinner, ‘Hs. Lordships‘. It’s in the middle of the Berkeley marina, stuck way out in the bay. Gorgeous view. Humongous buffet. The food was… fine. Some of it was quite good, some of it was okay, some of it was… not. And it was insanely busy. Meh. For $25 each it would have been a great deal. For $50 each, there are literally a hundred restaurants within walking distance of my apartment that would have done a better job, though admittedly not with a buffet.

Ah well. The view was pretty spectacular (even if we weren’t anywhere near the windows).

In other news, here we have some very relieved fowl. Autumn and I ran into them while doing a tour of Vasco Caves, which is a kind of neat wildlife reserve (it has kit foxes!) with some Native American cave paintings that aren’t actually in caves. (Actually, they barely have one cave and it only goes in ten feet and is like fifty feet wider than it is deep. The name is suspect.) It’s really hard to get on the tour list, they only do a couple a month, but a last-minute spot opened up. And we saw a bunch of wildlife, including these turkeys, a bunch of other birds, a couple of coyotes, etc, but alas did not see any kit foxes.

Happy Turkey Day, to you and to these fowl, and to everyone else who lived to peck and squawk at least a little longer.

Apparently they can fly well enough to perch in the tops of trees. After I heard that, I kept my eyes upward whenever we were near trees. Being pooped on by a songbird is one thing…

Dog of the Day: Kona the Basenji German Shepherd Mix Puppy

Kona is nine months old and may well actually be a basenji German shepherd mix, despite the fact that (as referenced in a comment on this post) rather a wide variety of things get labeled ‘basenji mix’. Well, whatever she is, she’s very photogenic.

Happy almost-turkey day! What’re you having for Thanksgiving?

Dog of the Day: September the Miniature Schnauzer

September in November! I could use a little more of that… specifically, I could use a little more daylight. This time of year I walk out of work at 6 PM and … it feels like I’m leaving work at 8. Which was never a favorite thing of mine to do. (And yes, San Francisco sunsets are preeeeetty early this time of year.)

So happy September! September is a 10-year-old salt and pepper miniature schnauzer, which as we all know are wont to schnauze at any opportunity. She prefers to wear her fur long, and although she is brushed quite frequently, she is still enough of a puppy that she tends to go all helter-skelter within a few hours. Doesn’t bother me: I’ve always liked that natural, wind-blown look.

Happy little-dog face. She was hard to photograph because every time she looked at me she wanted to give me kisses.

Dog of the Day: Bodie the Belgian Shepherd Aussie Mix

Bodie may also be Bodhi (we’ve seen a couple of Bodhis before), or some other variation on the name. I didn’t ask for a spelling, because I was too busy admiring his utterly magnificent tail. I have never seen anything like it, neither in my many years of dog-blogging nor before. It is glorious. I did ask his mom what he was, and she said he was a Belgian shepherd Aussie mix. I was a little dubious, because I don’t think I’ve seen an Australian shepherd that was black with tan points, but google sez they’re out there.

He reminds me a bit of Trucker, except the tail is… well, you’ll see.

Look at that tail. Yes, it requires daily brushing. So? It is totally worth it.

And this is what happens when he wags. (Which he does rather a lot.)
