Dog of the Day: Talulah the English Springer Spaniel

Talulah is eleven years old! I totally had her pegged as a puppy, with that ridiculous puppy ‘fro. But then, I have to admit, I don’t have a lot of experience with English springer spaniels.

PS: Hooray, the latest WordPress update broke picture captions in my theme. Do they look awful (super-tiny text, huge grey box for the text) for everyone, or is it just Mac browsers? I wonder if I’m going to have to sit down and re-learn enough CSS to fix them?

Another breed of dog, like a lot of the spaniels, where I could spend all day petting their ears.

How does this happen? It’s completely ridiculous.

Dog of the Day: Akita Inu

I’m being a bit lazy today, I admit it. I have a dozen dogs lined up with a hundred or more pictures that I have to go through, and like 94 of them are adorable pictures, and I just don’t feel up to choosing right now.

So here’s someone I only got four pictures of. All four of them were good, I chose two, the end. Then again, for an akita inu, I might just as well aim the camera and take one picture, because they only have one apparent mood and it is ‘dignifiedly-awesome’.

Akitas have a reputation for being standoffish, but in this case the dog was quite friendly… it was the owner who was standoffish.

You’d really only need one of these guys to keep you warm in a tent in a snowstorm.

Happy face. This guy was enjoying the crowds.

Dog of the Day: Milli the Golden Retriever Irish Setter Mix Repeat Customer!

If you do not instantly squeal at the sound of the name ‘Milli’ then you have not been reading my blog for long enough and must do some remedial work. Go check out this link here and report back… I’ll wait.

Back? Squealing? Good! I ran into Milli again, now fully two years old and just as happy and friendly, and only marginally less wiggly. Her mom now thinks she’s a golden retriever Irish setter mix, which I can definitely see.

Make sure to check out her latest on her twitter feed, too. Some gorgeous shots there.

Golden Retriever Irish Setter Mix Smiling

She’s still got that same Silli-Milli grin she had in her puppy pictures. So cute.

Mom was at a sidewalk cafe, and Milli got a little something from the table.

Sunday Switchup: Island in a Sea of Clouds

I’m not even sure where this one was, but it sure was pretty… an island in a sea of clouds.

Island In The Clouds

Can be awfully pretty, hiking around the ridges and peaks in the Bay Area.

Caturday Supplement: E.V. Again

Autumn sent me another picture of E. V. that I just had to post.

Black Cat

I really want to meet this cat.

Dog of the Day: Giant Wooly Malamute

I ran across this guy just chilling out in a parking space in Chinatown. His dad was sitting in the car right next to him and studiously ignoring me as he played with his phone. And he continued to do so even when I got near the driver’s side window and the dog decided that replacing him in the driver’s seat was the way to go.

I am almost certainly a bad person for doing this to that poor driver. But y’know what? I’d pay good money to get squooshed by a malamute, so I don’t feel TOO bad about it.

I know someone who is totally infatuated with a certain wooly malamute, so this post is dedicated to her. Even if maybe this dog isn’t quite floofy enough for her.

Huge Wooly Malamute Sticking His Head Out A Car Sun Roof

The first thing I thought of when I saw this was a toy that I had that was already vintage when I was a kid.

Huge Wooly Malamute Sticking His Head Out A Car Sun Roof

He was having a grand old time greeting every person that walked by on EITHER side of the street. No barking… just staring and grinning.

For some reason this guy reminds me of a ‘wolf whistler’. Except I don’t find it offensive when it’s very nearly a wolf that’s doing it.

There, that’s the happy face he was giving people as they walked by.

His enthusiasm was actually a little bit intimidating to some passers-by.

Five points to anyone who can identify that game.

I was thinking, “Uh… oops?”

Yeah, I’m a little embarrassed to have caused this much disruption, not to mention squooshage. Not embarrassed enough to not snap a picture, admittedly.

Double Dog Day: Poodle Poodle Surprise

I am not sure how I managed to get this first picture. That’s not to say it’s great… but it may well be the only way I could have gotten any detail on both the black poodle and the white poodle in those lighting conditions in the same picture. You can see what the white pup looked like in most of the pictures I took of him by looking at the bit that’s in the sun. Which is to say, he pretty much looks like the sun.

Black And White Tiny Poodles Meeting For The First Time

I think the white one was a grown-up and the black one was still quite a young pup, but no notes so I’m not sure.

They had JUST met when I saw them. They hit it off instantly. It was sooooo cute.

Dog of the Day: Little White Dog

Okay, I admit it, I’m really bad with the small curly-furred white dogs. I don’t think this one has the ears to be a poodle, and she isn’t shaped right to be a bichon. Wrong ears and too big for a Westie. Coton de Tulear, perhaps? I dunno, looks a little big?

Eh. Whatever. It’s a super-happy and adorable dog. The rest is, ahem, window dressing.

(BTW, I just spent around 45 minutes editing pictures for an epic post, and I still have another 45 minutes of work at least to go. Maybe tomorrow, maybe Friday.)

White Dog In Window

It was late in the evening and this was a (closed) dog grooming parlor. But I happen to know there was someone in the back… pretty sure the dog was supposed to be in back with them, and not in the window, though. Well, I won’t tell if she won’t.

Dog of the Day: Cal the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Poodle Mix Puppy

So frustrating. I took a whole mess of pictures of the most adorable little German shepherd puppy, 2 months old. Not a single one came out sharp enough to post, except one where he had his back to the camera. That’s what happens with puppies in any but the absolute best possible light. Sorry, Maxx… maybe next time!

Almost the same experience with Cal, a 14-week-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel/poodle mix, but I got one or two that were almost acceptable of him walking around free, and then captured him for a shot. Needless to say, he wasn’t complaining.

Cal is a scurrier. Turn around for a tenth of a second, turn back, and he’s somewhere totally unexpected.

He was a most obliging sort. He would have stayed like this for as long as I wanted to pet him.

Double Dog Day: Harley and Loki the Malamutes

God I love malamutes and huskies. They are pretty close to the most photogenic breeds I run across, and they all have such incredibly distinct and visible personalities. I hear they can be giant pains-in-the-ass, but I can’t help but think that they must be well worth the occasional disassembled living room furniture or food stolen off the dining room table.

I’m pretty sure that Harley (girl, 8.5 years old) is the one with the prominent nose stripe, on the right in the first picture. Which makes Loki (boy, 6, and apparently quite well-named) the one on the left.

BTW, someone is ‘scraping’ my web site: downloading all the content. It looks like it’s a person on a home internet connection, which means it’s almost certainly not some kind of web spider thingie. Which I suspect means that pretty soon there’s going to be someone else hosting a ‘Dogs of San Francisco’ web site somewhere. Whee. (Or, at least, that’s probably the plan. We’ll see if they still want to do it after they find out how many gigabytes of picture files they have to host in order to keep a copy of my blog!)

Two Malamutes Looking Goofy

They were hanging out right outside a local music lesson studio thingie. I really wanted someone to tell the girl inside, ‘you can come out and pet them’, but… not my dogs, not my girl, probably wouldn’t have been taken well by anyone. Ah well.

Malamute With Eyes Closed Looking Happy

Like I said… personality. Malamutes have as much personality as ten regular humans, who tend to just look stuffed and fake as soon as you point a camera at them.

Those eyes. Somewhere between ‘piercing’ and ‘derpy’ lies the malamute.

Malamute With Blue Eyes And A Pink Stripe On Her Nose Looking Coy

Coy looks…

…in all directions. (Does that make her a ‘coy-dog’?)

Two Malamutes Being Silly

Didn’t get any good pictures of it, but Loki has one blue eye and one brown one.
