Dog of the Day: Winnie the Utterly Adorable Shiba Inu Puppy

I only ran into Winnie (5 months old) this morning, but I just had to rush her onto the site, because she really is something special. Not only is she one of the cutest puppies I’ve seen in a very long time, but she is one of the most affectionate shibas I’ve ever met: she loves everybody and every-dog. And she is surprisingly strong for her size and is always pulling mom towards anyone whose ankles look the least bit lickable.

Apparently Winnie had parvo when she was little, and she nearly didn’t make it. But now she’s happy and healthy, thank goodness.

Waaaait a minute… look at that shadow. Is it possible that Winnie is BATDOG??

That spitz-breed expression again.

Look at that tail. I uncurled it twice, I couldn’t help myself.

Double Dog Day: Chrissie the Finnish Spitz and Gus the Schnauzer/Yorkshire Terrier

A first for us: a full-blooded Finnish spitz! They’re a lot smaller than I expected.

I am reliably informed that Chrissie is super-loyal, and almost 11 years old, and that Gus is 8, and is Chrissie’s companion animal. I think we can all agree that if a human can have a companion animal, it’s only fair if a dog can too.

Thirty-three pictures of these two. In not a single one of them are they both looking in the same direction.

Chrissie was definitely shaved a bit in the not-too-distant past.

Shaved Finnish Spitz

She sure is photogenic.

Schnauzer/Yorkshire Terrier Mix

I’m gonna say that half-schnauzers at least get to half-schnauze.

Shaved Finnish Spitz

The spitz-y breeds sure do have a distinctive way of ‘smiling’.

Like I said: really photogenic. You can almost see the wind whistling through her fur.

Dog of the Day: Tilly the Australian Shepherd/Irish Music Aficionado Mix

Tilly is the pup of a friend of Autumn’s, who has Irish music concerts at her house on a regular basis. Until quite recently, Tilly would hide in the back room and eventually get let out into the side yard so she wouldn’t freak out. Until last week, when they were having a workshop and apparently (I wasn’t there) Tilly came and sat under Liz Carroll’s chair. She has, after hearing all these concerts from outside, developed excellent musical taste.

And we were there on Thursday to see John Doyle play, and Tilly came right out and hung out and listened in the front row. Until John brought out a friend to play didgeridoo for one number. Tilly, looking quite offended, got up and walked out. But she came back for the next number. A dog of very conservative and traditional tastes, it seems.

If you look closely, you can even see that her ears are a little perked up. She periodically looked up at John, especially when he was singing. Too funny.

Dog of the Day: Tremendously Fluffy Labradoodle

Oh my god fluff. This was an 8-month-old labradoodle that I ran into. The fellow walking him was friendly but didn’t want to give the dog’s name, since it was his boss’s dog. Seems a wee bit silly to me, but hey… I am not of the social class that has employees to walk my dog, so maybe it doesn’t for them.

8-Month-Old Yellow Labradoodle

Not used to labradoodles with fur like this. Longer than either labs OR poodles!

8-Month-Old Yellow Labradoodle

Another pup who was hard to get pictures of, since he really wanted to give smooches and receive petting.

8-Month-Old Yellow Labradoodle

To give you some idea: when you pet this dog, you can actually feel every one of his ribs. I am pretty sure he is more than 50% fluff by volume.

Caturday Supplement: Macy’s Kittens

I have had two people in the last two weeks tell me that I need to up my feline game, because caturday just isn’t caturday without at least some occasional, well, cats. The problem is, I’m almost tapped out! Need to see if I can get some more. In the mean time, here are the last of the Macy’s kittens from last Christmas.

Grey Tiger Tabby Kitten

I also need to get some cat pictures because I haven’t had any cat cuddle time in far too long.

Dog of the Day: Baxter the German Shepherd/Australian Cattle Dog Mix

I really wish more of my pictures of Baxter had come out, but when you’re taking them in the BART tunnel under the bay, you don’t have a lot of light to work with.

One of the pictures I really wish had come out was when Baxter did the following: turned around, put his head behind mom’s knee, and then slowly tucked his head down, and down, and bent his front legs, butt up in the air, and then tucked his head, until he did a very slow and graceful somersault and ended up on his back, and then rolled over to the side and stood up again. I swear, it looked 100% choreographed, but his mom seemed just as surprised as I was. Boy was it goofy.

A brief moment of stillness. As soon as he started moving again, bam, blur.

Dog of the Day: Taco the Catahoula Leopard Dog

So, I mentioned that we found Bentley (from yesterday) out in front of a cafe in Emeryville. But he was just one of two different dogs that we ran into at that same table at that same cafe on that same day. And the other one was every bit as awesome.

Introducing Taco, one and a half years old, and a delightfully happy Catahoula cur (or, as we call them around here, a ‘Hula-Hula Cat-Dog’.) Her parents wanted me to add the following information to the mix: she’s a rescue dog, and her favorite thing in the whole wide world is snuggling. All together now: AAAWWWWWWW!

Blue Leopard (Merle) Catahoula Hog Dog

Catahoulas might be high-maintenance dogs (they need a LOT of exercise), but damn, are they gorgeous.

Blue Leopard (Merle) Catahoula Cur

They definitely lucked out: not a lot of Catahoulas around here at all. I bet next to none show up in shelters.

Look at that face. Who could say ‘no’ to that face?

And this is her goofy face.

Dog of the Day: Bentley the Bouvier

As promised last week, here’s our second fluffball Bouvier, Bentley (2 years). And boy is he a lover. I was a little worried I’d lose Autumn to his charms.

Fawn Bouvier des Flandres And Woman

Bentley was perfectly gracious and polite to me, but he just adored Autumn from the moment he set eyes on her.

Fawn Bouvier des Flandres And Woman

We met him outside a little eatery in Emeryville, along with another dog whom you’ll be seeing shortly.

Didn’t get a single good picture of his eyes OR his ears. Oh well.

Yay for nose shots.

Dog of the Day: Spud the Mutt

Don’t have a lot of guesses. Spud’s dad thinks basenji, but as a certain wise person once said, if you took all the ‘basenji mixes’ you found out there at face value, and compared it to the number of basenjis in existence, well, it would imply some fascinating reproductive prowess.

Also, gotta admit, I love the name.

Those ears. Oh my god. Spud is just a puppy, 5 months old. I wonder if he’ll grow into them?

Spud introduced himself, and immediately told me he wanted to play. I only got a few pictures because I was too busy playing with him. So cute.

Dog of the Day: Guinness the German Shepherd Mix

I’ve been saving this post for a day when I have some time and patience. Why? Because I asked the fine people at A Home Within, a national charity with a local office right near me, to send me some pictures of their office dog. And they sent me too many too awesome pictures, and I just had to post all of them!

Those ears.

As Ms. Hoffman said, ‘Some of the pictures are demonstrative of Guiness’s patience with the people around him’.

Another quote that I well believe: “Guinness is a fantastic beast, 90lbs of talkative, goofy sweetness.”

Upside Down German Shepherd Mix with Tennis Ball

I can tell that Guinness is a blast to play with. I bet he plays a mean game of tag, fetch, and wrestling, often all at the same time.

I have not yet met Guinness. I find this distressing, especially after seeing these pictures.
