Dog of the Day: Phoenix Chihuahua

I visited my brother briefly between Christmas and New Year’s. He lives in the Phoenix, Arizona area, in Tempe. He has a good-sized house, and rents part of it out, and one of the people who lives in that part has a dog. I can’t for the life of me remember his name, but he’s quite a friendly little beast.

But, well, not the prettiest: apparently he had sarcoptic mites until quite recently (he’s 2), when they more commonly go away of their own accord before a dog turns 1. Consequently, he’s just growing in his first real coat. Well, I’m glad it’s all working out for him, however belatedly.

Small Cream Chihuahua

Every picture of this dog looks like he’s cringing. I wasn’t beating him, I promise. He wasn’t actually terrified, even. He was just chilly.

Small Cream Chihuahua

Really. Seriously. This is not a terrified dog. Look, his tail isn’t tucked. (But damn, does he do a good whipped dog act!)

Goofy head tilt chihuahua dance.

Dog of the Day: Chelsea the Poodle/Cocker Spaniel Mix

I was wondering what Chelsea was, with those ears. They are even more ridiculous in real life than they look in the pictures.

Silver Beige Poodle/Cocker Spaniel Mix With Ridiculous Poofly Ears

I ran into Chelsea a couple days before New Year’s. She was doing her best to spread holiday cheer.

Incidentally, that in the background there is part of Ghirardelli Square.

I could play with those ears all day. *poke* *floof!*

Dog of the Day: Golden Retriever Mix

I’m having trouble with this one. Almost looks like a golden/Great Pyrenees mix or something, though the’s pretty small for that.

Golden Retriever Mix

Making a golden retriever pooflier is kind of like gilding the lily, but I’m not going to complain.

Golden Retriever Mix

Someone must have trimmed this guy’s toehawks.

Golden Retriever Mix

A little blurry, but I really like his expression.

Caturday Supplement: Macy’s Window Kitty

I don’t have many of these this year, because I was out of town for a lot of the time, and sick for some of the rest of their tenure. I’m going to have to hit up my coworkers for kitty pictures this year.

They’re so amazingly good at looking woebegone.

Double Dog Day: The Dogs of Le Marcel

I can’t believe I never heard about Le Marcel! It was apparently started in Seattle but is now in Pacific Heights (Union Street), and it is a dog bakery. That’s right. They have baked goods for dogs, including plenty of carob products that look just like chocolate. You humans will have to get your baked goods fix elsewhere.

They also have two mascots: an Italian greyhound named Marcel and a foofly wiener long-haired dachshund named Leo. If you squint a little, I bet you can figure out where the name of the bakery came from.

Grey and White Italian Greyhound

I can’t help but notice that they both look a little… on edge.

Wheaten Long-Haired Dachshund

Well, I’d be on edge too if I had that keen a sense of smell and lived constantly surrounded by delicious baked goods…

Dog of the Day: Declan the Irish Setter

Got about twenty pictures of Declan last weekend. Eighteen of them were blurry and two looked like this (only worse: this is after lots of screwing around with brightness and color.) But dammit, I want our first Irish setter, and Declan is an absolute adorable sweetheart that gives dog smooches, so to heck with it, you’re getting Declan whether you like him or not! (You’d like him if you met him, I promise.)

Irish Setter

This doesn’t really do Declan justice. Maybe if we ask nicely we can get Declan’s family to give us a few more pictures of him?

Dog of the Day: Sterling the Great Dane

Ran into Sterling on one of our hiking outings, last October. It was quite dark, so most of my pictures didn’t come out, but I got a couple of okay ones.

Poor Sterling. He was a rescue, years ago. He’s now 7, and he’s still scared of people. It breaks my heart seeing a scared Great Dane.

Mantle Great Dane

I guess his coloration is called ‘mantle’.

Mantle Great Dane

Ah well. At least I’m glad he has someone taking good care of him now.

Happy New Year’s Dog!

Hope you didn’t do too much partying last night, like this guy.

(I was GOING to post our first Irish setter ever today, but I’m still getting used to this camera… every damn picture I took was blurry except one, and that one’s going to take a lot of tweaking because it’s too dark. Bah!)

Someone, it appears, is about ready for the holiday season to be over with.

Dog of the Day: Assistance German Shepherd

Back in San Francisco, as of yesterday evening.

Today, I had a long day: got locked out of my apartment (this morning at 10), and then left a credit card at a restaurant, and then found my credit card, and then got myself back into my apartment (this evening at 8). So, sorry for the late and short post, but… yeah. I’m tired.

So have an assistance dog I met in the airport on the way home.

German Shepherd Assistance Dog

He’s still at that awkward adolescent stage, but apparently he’s a well-trained assistance dog already.

Caturday Supplement: Tuxedo Kitty

My brother, Brad, lives in Phoenix, Arizona, a place I was able to visit for quite a short period on my way home from Indiana. His street has a little crowd of feral kitties living nearby… this is one of them, who camped out in the middle of the road when we were pulling in and decided not to move when the car approached. But ran away from me when I got within twenty yards. Go figure.

Tuxedo Cat

Staring fixedly at me. I was literally 15 to 20 yards away. The car didn’t get his attention when it was ten feet away.

Tuxedo Cat

When I got ten yards away he got up and sauntered off.

Tuxedo Cat

And then sat down in someone’s driveway and watched me to make sure I wasn’t going to get any closer. Silly cat.
