Dog of the Day: Harley the Neapolitan Mastiff

Harley is 5 and a half years old. Why so serious, giant puppy?

Neapolitan Mastiff

That's dad in the background. Funny the way the camera distorted his head.

Neapolitan Mastiff

He WOULD NOT face me. Goofy dog.

Dog of the Day: Atlas the Great Dane

I’m not sure about this, but I think Atlas might be the store dog for the eyewear store at 454 Geary. Sorry, I don’t know the name, since it doesn’t appear to have a sign. But it does have one hell of a dog.

Great Dane

I think I heard that Atlas is around 8 or 9 months, and is currently 90 pounds, and will end up nearly double that. Wow.

Great Dane

He's very well-trained and polite for a dog of that age. Doesn't jump up on people or slobber all over them even right after drinking.

Great Dane

I kept expecting him to get a great big Great Dane kiss, but no such luck.

Great Dane

The light was awful and I was shooting handheld at 1/40 of a second, but I'm still really sad that this one didn't come out well. Because those ears are RIDICULOUS.

Double Dog Day: Collie Collie! (Troy and Gypsy)

Bay to Barkers is starting to feel like ages ago. These are two more pups I met there, Troy the rough-coated collie and Gypsy the smooth-coated collie. Mom and dad indicated that they were charter members of a Facebook group, something like ‘Rough and Smooth Collies of Northern California’, but I’m unable to find it to link to it, so you’re just going to have to settle for the dogs.

Edit: Sigh. Whyfor you screw up so much, WordPress?

Rough-Coated Collie and Smooth-Coated Collie

This just cements the observation I made the first time I saw a smooth-coat: they are funny-looking. (Still awesome though.)

Rough-Coated Collie and Smooth-Coated Collie

Those ears, with the 90-degree forward bend right at the tip!

Rough-Coated Collie and Smooth-Coated Collie

Well, they're both very pointy.

Rough-Coated Collie and Smooth-Coated Collie

This looks like it might be one of those sibling things. I may well have done it to my own brother, in fact.

Dog of the Day: Yellow Labrador Retriever

This is the owner of The Scnozzola, along with the owner of the owner of the schnozzola. Does that mean she has dognose-by-proxy?

Labrador Retriever

That's mom in the background. She seems like a happy Lab owner to me: she's always willing to be amused by her dog.

Labrador Retriever

Just a teeny touch of tongue. And a very determined expression.

Labrador Retriever

There's the schnozzola again. And, although I cut off the top of her head, you can see mom laughing in the background at her pup's attempts to smooch my camera.

Dog of the Day: Chance the… Dingo Mix? Lab Mix?

The people walking Chance were happy to let me take some pictures, but they weren’t sure what he was any more than I was. He looks like he could be a Lab mix, but I’ve never seen a lab mix with Lab fur, but with ears that were 100% up. They said they thought he might be a dingo mix, and I have to say, he looks a surprising amount like a dingo. (Our only other dingo mix was mixed with Lab, so his ears were half-up.)

Anyway, he’s 4 years old and loves everyone, including babies.

Dingo Mix

Funny, the other dingo mix I took pictures of was standing on one of those yellow knobbly things too.

Dingo Mix

I have rarely run across a dog who looked as glad to see me as Chance, and yet did not leap up on me and try to lick any exposed portion of my anatomy.

Dingo Mix

Very lab-like coat, except for the white splotches on his chest, neck, and feet.

Dingo Mix

"Mom's Best Friend"

Dingo Mix

I can't get over this guy's expressions. So happy.

Dingo Mix

...and soooo goofy.

Dingo Mix

Oop, someone has an itch. World must stop.

Dog of the Day: Maverick the Collie

Maverick was a visitor to our fair city, I think. Certainly I don’t see a whole lot of collies around. In these pictures he’s 8 months old.

Collie

That's the San Francisco Maritime Park, apparently. It's right out in front of Ghirardelli Square.

Collie

Collies are so pointy! In all sorts of different directions.

Collie and Friends

That's mom and dad. His shirt says "World's toughest mudder." Not entirely clear on what that means.

Collie

That's one photogenic dog.

Dog of the Day: Marley the Lab Mix (and Jake Revisited!)

This is Jake’s friend Marley. You remember Jake, from last Friday? Yep, this is the dog in the background with the really disgruntled expression on his face.

Labrador Retriever Mix and St. Bernard

Compare and contrast. They make quite a pair.

Labrador Retriever Mix

Aw. Happy expression. And teeny bit of tonguage.

Labrador Retriever Mix

I love the little hint of grey eyebrows. Gives his face a lot of character.

Labrador Retriever Mix

Look at that ear. How does that work? It's obviously a floppy lab-like ear, how did he get it hiked up like that? Also, the floppy thing directly above Marley's nose? That's a Jake ear.

Labrador Retriever Mix

I like Marley. He has a lot of personality.

Caturday Supplement: Ocelot!

Adorable! She totally looks like a humongous 80-lb housecat.

Sorry for the late post, but Autumn and I were out at a sea music festival, where Autumn did three performances. And sounded awesome.

Ocelot

I will probably reiterate this several times, but I cannot get over the adorable pink nose!

Ocelot

Unlike the Geoffrey's kitten, this much larger cat required no protective equipment.

Ocelot

The face and attitude were totally housecat, except at five times the length. Me-YOW.

Ocelot

The flopped paw. So cute!

Ocelot

Brave woman. Apparently no permanent mangling, though, or at least none visible, so I guess she knew what she was doing.

Ocelot

Those claws do look just the teensiest bit... terrifying.

Ocelot

That boot makes the cat look smaller than she is. That's a BIG boot.

Ocelot

Eee! (I told you I'd be mentioning that adorable nose again.)

Dog of the Day: Jake the Drooly St. Bernard (and Friend)

As mentioned yesterday, here is Jake, the 6-year-old St. Bernard! His friend is Marley the Lab mix, who I will be featuring separately, since there are just too many good pictures of each of them to fit in one day.

St. Bernard

How can you tell the street is level? The St. Bernard is drooling out of both sides of his mouth! (Actually the street is sharply slanted here. I don't care, it's still a good joke.)

St. Bernard and Lab Mix

Look at the feet on that dog.

St. Bernard and Lab Mix

Is it just me, or does Marley look distinctly disgruntled in this picture? Don't worry, pup, we'll post some pictures of you soon enough.

St. Bernard

That tongue is the size of my entire hand. And his head is ginormous!

St. Bernard

While I was taking pictures of Marley, Jake rolled onto his back with his feet in the air. And then, when I tried to take pictures of that, he rolled back again. Hmf.

St. Bernard

Dogs sure do stand up funny sometimes.

Dog of the Day: Petunia the European Staffordshire Bull Terrier

I would have sworn Petunia was a puppy, she was so little. But apparently European Staffordshires are built small, since she’s 5 years old. (I ran into her on 9/11, at the San Francisco Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival. And no, I didn’t give her any of my chocolate.)

Petunia is affiliated in some way with a Toronto dog charity called ‘Paws 4 the Cause‘, which helps dog owners with high veterinary bills.

I’ve got a treat that I’m going to try to post tomorrow or Saturday: a super-drooly St. Bernard named Jake. I may have gotten too many pictures of him… it’s taking quite a long time to sort through them all, find the decent ones, and then edit them. Hey, there are worse problems for an artist to have than ‘too much material’.

European Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Pretty collar! Petunia is every inch the lady.

European Staffordshire Bull Terrier

I think Petunia was a teensy bit overwhelmed by all the noise and people. Which is fair enough: so was I.

European Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Aww. Don't worry, pup, you'll be going home soon.

European Staffordshire Bull Terrier

I think this is someone's 'I need a tummyrub' expression. Or, at least, that's the effect it had on me.
